📚📚 Read every day challenge - Fall 2022 🍁🍂

Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Single Day” Challenge, Fall 2022 Edition! :maple_leaf: :fallen_leaf:

The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing…fall (or autumn if you prefer) is here! :raccoon:
We all know that fall can be a busier time of year, making it harder to build or maintain that Japanese reading habit. What better way to keep your motivation up than to join this thread of lovely like-minded readers? If you missed the previous Read Every Day challenges, feel free to jump in on this one! We would love to have more people join in on the fun and experience the magic of the challenge :sparkles:

A little history behind this challenge: last summer, @Redglare had the awesome idea of doing a “Read Every Day” challenge, where we challenged ourselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months - we liked this challenge so much that we decided to make it a recurring thing! Now we’re more than one year in, and the challenge is still going strong

Every challenge thread has its own special flavor, but the one thing they always have in common is being positive, encouraging, and fun! There are also usually some cute manga involved

Why is this challenge so special, or what makes it unique? Well, we think it’s a combination of the short/limited time frame, the habit-focused (versus output-focused) approach to the goal of “reading more,” and the general atmosphere of camaraderie and community spirit that’s been present in each challenge thread thus far ^^ I can say from personal experience that these challenges have helped me read way more than I would have otherwise, and many people (including myself) have noticed significant growth in reading speed and/or stamina while participating in the challenges.

Whether you are an expert reader already or a new reader just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge! To quote @Redglare:

This is a thread for people who:

:bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this fall
:bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books:

Time frame: October 1 - November 30

This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! This thread will be up and running until the end of December, so you can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you.

Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, Japanese webpages/blogs, or Japanese games - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer: “Reading” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated - for example, some people have counted reading Japanese subtitles as reading some days. In general, we are a pretty flexible and forgiving bunch

Threads worth checking out

I recommend checking out The News Reading Challenge thread if you’d like to read news articles every day, but you are of course welcome to post about it in this thread too if you’d like to.

I’m so in, and per my brand new tradition (from last time) I’m not going to fill out a forum calendar and instead will post a picture of my habit tracker at the end of the challenge.

I’m so excited for this. My favorite thread    Thank you for hosting @windupbird !

October and November are historically the busiest months of the year for me (I do a draw every day challenge every October, and then National Novel Writing Month every November…), but I’m going to be translating TJPW the whole time, so I’m signing up anyway!

= Japanese
= Japanese and Spanish

I am also committing to trying to read at least something in Spanish every day as well! Is it a mistake to try to do this right when I might be getting a full time job? Probably!

What I'm reading in Spanish:

I’m still reading Antes de Ser Libres by Julia Alvarez, so I’m going to keep reading that and will probably finish it during the challenge, though November in particular will likely be very slow.

I’ll probably check out another book to read after it, though I’m not quite sure what that book will be yet.

In addition to reading actual books, I found some fanfic for La Casa de las Flores that’s in Spanish, so I might try reading some of that! I read one fic already and had a much easier time with it, so that bodes pretty well, though of course I’m sure the difficulty of the fanfic varies considerably depending on the author haha.

What I'm reading in Japanese:

Just like the previous challenges, my main source of Japanese reading (and listening) is Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling, which I am currently doing fan translations for. I’d still be translating it even if I wasn’t doing this challenge .

This time around, I have a little extra pressure because my translations actually have quite a handful of readers now (my twitter account is at 90+ followers). TJPW is also gearing up for one of their biggest shows of the year on October 9, so I have my work cut out for me . I’m now armed with the CAT (computer-aided translation) software Smartcat this time, though, so I’m hoping that helps speed things up.

On the rare occasion that I’m caught up with my translations, I do still have poor neglected 大海原と大海原 volume 3 that I’ve been trying to read all year, haha, but keep not having the time to actually finish .

In addition to that, I have a couple books, 新日本プロレス英語入門 and 世界が広がる 推し活英語, which are meant to teach specialized English vocab to Japanese speakers (pro wrestling vocab for the first, and fandom vocab for the second), but which I have found that I can use in reverse.

I’ve actually read most of 新日本プロレス英語入門 already (and have created a custom glossary for Smartcat with the vocab in it), so I might have a shot at actually finishing it within this calendar year .

Yay, Autumn reading challenge! :fallen_leaf:

Several book clubs are coming up in late October and November ( おばちゃんたちのいるところ, ユージニア and possible new mystery?) plus I have a couple of books on the go and many others waiting (im)patiently to get their turn. I want to try fitting in some short spooky stories too, but we’ll see how much I can actually find time for. why won’t someone just pay me to read for hours and hours on end? I’d be willing to work unpaid overtime!

Welcome to MissDagger’s Home Post :maple_leaf: :jack_o_lantern: :snowflake: :christmas_tree:

:green_book: my bookmeter profile :orange_book: my study log :closed_book:

My plan for the challenge is as follows:

After a very spotty September, I want to get back to every day. And remind myself that I don’t have to read a whole chapter, I could just read a couple of pages. I also want to avoid grazing to be able to tick the box, tiny reads of my currently in progress reading projects is so much better.

This should help me catch up with the book clubs I’m behind on.

And if I catch up, I get to either read ahead (if I want), or start digging into something else alongside my book club reads. There is a lot of reading ahead of me though to get to that place.

Things that will be challenges to reading every day: my brother will visit for a long weekend in October, [redacted] happens shortly after that (this is the surprise I mentioned in the summer challenge thread), and (since I plan to continue this into December) a 1 week long vacation to the UK will happen.

Also Christmas is my favorite time of year, so starting very soon I will start to read holiday stories (in English) to get myself in the mood. Probably also watch holiday movies. In late November and in December, I’ll take up more baking (probably). I just love celebrating this season. Warmth and light, something very needed in dark northern Sweden (when at its worst the sun is only up for like 3-4 hours), and lots of cold and snow.

These last weeks I’ve been trying to read upwards of 12500 characters per day (for my current book that’s 35 pages per day, but it varies a lot). I’ll try to keep that up throughout the challenge as well. I’ll use for days on which I’ve had a dedicated reading session and for days on which I’ve also hit my reading goal. (The other way around looks better, but always having to edit is a pain)

EDIT - Oct 12th:

Just finished my second novel of the challenge. Generally things are looking good, though I’m starting to feel a little overwhelmed with the giant task that is learning Japanese once again.
With lectures starting again next week, I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up my 12500 characters/day pace. Starting tomorrow I’ll go down to 10000 and see how it feels.

EDIT - Oct 29th: Decided earlier that I’ll be dropping out of the challenge after today.

Reasonings

I’ve been hitting my reading goal of 12500/10000 characters every day of the challenge, and that wasn’t always a good thing. Even when I didn’t really have the time that day, I sat down and read those 10000+ characters. I don’t wanna keep putting Japanese in front of other aspects of my life like that, so I’ll drop out here.
I’ll still be reading something every day, I’m certain of that much, but the challenge doesn’t hold much value to me in that regard. If anything counts, than the challenge in reading every day is missing :b

Joining again!! Though my goal will rather be to read more days of the two months than last challenge! The end of my two-week break will mark the beginning of my most important academic year, so Japanese in general has become more and more a lesser priority, unfortunately.

I’ll mostly be reading かがみの孤城 (currently 43% through), though I did recently grab three books from Kinokuniya in Singapore and might be tempted to try those! It was my first time in a Japanese bookstore, and I ended up spending two full hours in there :joy:

:maple_leaf:Rose’s Fall Reading Challenge:poultry_leg:

I need to get into the habit of reading more to prepare for the JLPT N4 in December, so I decided to take part in this challenge! :books:

What I Plan to Read
  • :four_leaf_clover:よつばと! - Volume 1+ :four_leaf_clover:
Read quickly through this book last month (my first book in Japanese!), but I was able to understand most of it. I would like to go through this book more in-depth this time around. Looking to eventually purchase the next few volumes as well.

  • :notes:この音とまれ! - Volume 1 :notes:
Watched the anime for this and loved it. So I bought the first three volumes of the manga and looking to try reading the first volume. Surprisingly there is no official translation of the manga, although the anime did get official subtitles.

  • :newspaper_roll: NHK News Easy :newspaper_roll:
I tried reading a few articles a couple of years ago, but it was still too difficult for me. Hopefully this time around, I can actually read some articles.

  • :heavy_check_mark: Miscellaneous Readings :heavy_check_mark:
In case I did read something in Japanese, but it wasn’t any of the sources mentioned above.

During September I’ve been busy and then on vacation so my reading has suffered and I’m behind on all my bookclubs :fearful:
Hopefully this challenge is a good excuse to get back on track with some comfy fall reading. I’ll set up a home thread later.

I remembered to make a home thread this time around, haha. I might not make very many updates this time around, but I’ll try to do better at keeping track of daily reads.

I had a busy September, so hopefully this will help me get back on the reading wagon. :joy: I’m trying to use Natively properly so that I can read at my level, so I’ll probably be trying to do 30 pages a day or so in Japanese during the challenge. I’ll also (as usual) try and track my reading in Mandarin (probably not French or Spanish though, which I’ll keep more casual).

@fallynleaf I’m currently reading a Julia Alvarez book too! En el tiempo de las mariposas.

AUTUMN READING

You know what, I’m feeling like trying this out. Not sure I can manage every single day, but I been trying to read whenever I can anyway, so this will be nice.

What to start:

BTW here’s my natively for anyone interested!

Will hopefully make some progress and finish most of these, but I’m not gonna pressure myself about how much I’m gonna read, as long as I just read even a few pages a day that will be great. Especially since most of my manga is not the easiest. haha

Had to readjust the calendar to start on a Sunday, glad I figured that out :joy:
now i just need to remember to update this, too.

Reading during the Challenge

Danganronpa V3 - visual novel-
青春ブタ野郎 -light novel-
Chainsaw Man -manga-
Goblin Slayer -light novel- (jpdb.io)

Goals for this Challenge

  • Increase reading speed from 2.5 min/page to 1.5-2 min/page.
  • Lessen the guess work and narrow down my look ups to 1 word every 5 pages (currently 3/4)
  • Get more familiar with expressions/idioms used

:books: My study thread
:headphones: My home post in the Listen every day challenge

I’ve been slacking too much in both this and listening, so hopefully this will motivate me enough. Exited to see what everyone else is reading!

What I usually read:

  • Chi’s Sweet Home - it’s not much text as far as reading goes, but it’s a start.

What I want to read:

  • continue Chi’s Sweet Home (obviously)
  • try to read the news - NHK Easy News is still too difficult for me, so I will stick with NHK Easier
  • the stories from DrDru, so I can later transition to the Tile World Chronicles
  • something that sounds interesting from this thread!
