📚📚 Read every day challenge - Summer 2023 😎☀

Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Single Day” Challenge, Summer 2023 Edition! :sunglasses::sunny:

Summer time - the perfect time to kick back and relax with a good book, either outside on the beach or (if your weather is gross like mine) inside under the refreshing breeze of the air conditioner :joy: If you missed the previous Read Every Day challenges, feel free to jump in on this one! We would love to have more people join in on the fun and experience the magic of the challenge :sparkles:

A little history behind this challenge: in the summer of 2021, @Redglare had the awesome idea of doing a “Read Every Day” challenge, where we challenged ourselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months - we liked this challenge so much that we decided to make it a recurring thing! This season officially marks the challenge’s 2nd birthday - happy birthday Read Every Day Challenge! :birthday: As the longest-running host for this challenge, I want to take a moment and say thanks to everyone who has participated in these challenge threads so far - whether you’ve been here since the beginning or you’re joining us for the first time this season, we’re glad you’re here  This challenge wouldn’t still be running without the participation of readers like you!

Every challenge thread has its own special flavor, but the one thing they always have in common is being positive, encouraging, and fun! There are also usually some cute manga and cute animals involved - pet pictures are welcomed

Why is this challenge so special, or what makes it unique? Well, we think it’s a combination of the short/limited time frame, the habit-focused (versus output-focused) approach to the goal of “reading more,” and the general atmosphere of camaraderie and community spirit that’s been present in each challenge thread thus far ^^ I can say from personal experience that these challenges have helped me read way more than I would have otherwise, and many people (including myself) have noticed significant growth in reading speed and/or stamina while participating in the challenges.

Whether you are an expert reader already or a new reader just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge! To quote @Redglare:

This is a thread for people who:

:bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this summer
:bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books:

Time frame: July 1 - August 31

This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! This thread will be up and running until the end of September, so you can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you.

Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, Japanese webpages/blogs, or Japanese games - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer: “Reading” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated - for example, some people have counted reading Japanese subtitles as reading some days. In general, we are a pretty flexible and forgiving bunch

Threads worth checking out

If you’d like to read news articles every day, you may want to check out the The News Reading Challenge thread (but you are of course welcome to post about it in this thread too ).

There’s also quite a few book clubs here on the forum, some of them have vocab lists which can make for an easier reading experience. A list of book clubs can be found here:

Woo! Hello everyone, good to be back again for another reading challenge! Looking forward to doing a lot of good reading together with everyone! And, as always, thank you to @windupbird for putting the thread together. :blue_heart:

Goals:

For this challenge, I have an extremely specific goal that I will be calling “Operation Clean out Javerend’s Bookshelves”!

OCJB

I want to read at least the first volume of every series I own so that I can decide whether I want to read the whole series or not, and also decide whether I want to keep the series after I’m finished reading it or not. So, Phase 1 of the project will be reading everything in this stack (some of which are at various stages of already being read):

image

I expect that to take up most of July. Then, for August and September, I will be trying to finish off the series that I decide to finish but not keep, and at the end of the challenge I will sell and/or donate all the books that I chose not to keep! I haven’t been able to use my little coffee table for months because it’s just had stacks and stacks of books on it, so hopefully by the time the fall challenge rolls around I will have reclaimed some of this territory

I will also be reading along a few book clubs, generally I have been reading with the BBC, and have started the IBC primer and IBC book clubs with their current picks. I also have been working on the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar a little bit every day and following those threads, and reading アオのハコ with that club!

As we get closer to September, it will be approaching 1 year of me reading every day, and so I would also like to revisit the first volume of よつばと!around that point, just to make a real comparison between my reading level after a year of working almost exclusively on extensive reading daily. That was the first full volume of manga I ever finished, so I think it will make a good progress check.

I fell off at the end of the last challenge, but now I’m ready for the new one! Thanks to @windupbird for hosting as always.

I’ll be finishing off 告白 (73%; fell behind on the book club) and 世界から猫が消えたなら (55%), then will read コンビニ人間 until I catch up to the IBC Primer club.

I started out this year planning to finish at least one (non-book-club) novel every challenge, and in the spring I discovered that I could do well more than that, reading four in their entirety last month alone. (Of course, it also depends on how difficult the book is.) So I think this challenge I’ll be aiming for one every month instead. That should still give me the freedom to jump around as I’m liable to do while still being doable.

The novels I’m reading on my own that I already have started going into this challenge are:
空への助走  福蜂工業高校運動部 by 壁井ユカコ
青春サプリ。自分がここにいる理由
2.43 清陰高校男子バレー部  代表決定戦編② by 壁井ユカコ

Ideally, I’d like to finish at least one of those during these three months, regardless of how many others I finish.

The other novels I have started/start during the challenge:
おばちゃんたちのいるところ by 松田青子 (book club)
四畳半神話大系 by 森見登美彦 (book club) DROPPED
あん byドリアン助川 (book club)
あの空はキミの中 ~Play ball, never cry!~ by 舞原沙音
さいとう市立さいとう高校野球部 (上) by あさのあつこ
さいとう市立さいとう高校野球部 (下) by あさのあつこ
ガールズ・ブルー by あさのあつこ
君の声は魔法 by 花房マミ
2.43 清陰高校男子バレー部  春高編① by 壁井ユカコ
DOUBLES!! ーダブルスー by 天沢夏月
DOUBLES!! ーダブルスー 2nd Set by 天沢夏月
ペンギン・ハイウェイ by 森見登美彦
宝石商リチャード氏の謎鑑定 by 辻村七子
DOUBLES!! ーダブルスー 3rd Set by 天沢夏月
おっさんだけど聖女です by 桃瀬わさび

I will also be participating in the summer Listen Every Day Challenge, though I don’t expect to be doing that one every day. I’ll also still be tracking the things I watch, with or without JP subs, in this post.

Summer Challenge

2023

Total Data

Across the season and overall, I’m improving, but I’ve stayed the same over the year. I think that has to do with a couple of impactful events in my life. Next season, I hope to continue my reading streak and that I can pick up my reading pace in order to meet my volumes read goal for 2023.

Update: accidently copied the wrong graph but my reasoning still stands.

Wrap-up post

Approach for this challenge

Wellll this challenge could be a bit touch-and-go tbh, someone at work quit just before I went on vacation so who knows what repercussions this will have on my workload in the coming months (literally we are a hot mess right now, to the point where it has ceased to surprise me when we lose someone temporarily or permanently for one reason or another - I do not react well to change, particularly big change like this, so the fact that I have become relatively desensitized to this sort of thing should tell you all you need to know about how the last few years have gone).

Anyway, you didn’t come here to hear about my stupid workplace falling apart at the seams, you came here to hear about what I’m planning to read this challenge xD I will definitely be jumping back into the Flying Witch book club for the latest volume. I also recently acquired the first volume of both the manga and the light novel version of something called 宝石商リチャード氏の謎鑑定 - pretty sure I saw the name once somewhere on the forums and that’s how I found it but I can’t remember where :see_no_evil: As usual, this purchasing decision was based on minimal information and important considerations such as the fact that Richard’s character intrigues me and I like the way he’s drawn :joy: I also made several highly aspirational novel purchases for some reason (including something called 52ヘルツのクジラたち because the whole concept of the 52 Hz whale has a huge hold on my heart I am aware that the book is not about actual whales). So if my energy is good, I’d like to dive into those ^^ If not, I always have the 5th volume of the tanuki manga to fall back on, and a few other low-effort manga options.

As usual, no calendar for me but instead just snooping on what everyone else is reading and giving you all updates on the various things I’m reading day by day.

So I guess I’ll kick off by saying I read another decent chunk of 嫌いなら呼ぶなよ as part of the informal reading group (join whenever, set your own schedule). I probably have ~3 more days of reading it to finish if I keep my current pace. I’m caught up to both コップクラフト (Natively LN club) and 予言の島 (Spooky Book Club, starting in a day or two) so I’m free to read my side-books as I please. Until the Natively Mystery Book club (still voting!) starts in a few weeks.

And thank you @windupbird for hosting again! :sparkles:

As I try to remember vocabularies worth remembering well, vocabularies per day should decrease or get zeroed.

Grammar / structure is yet another interesting topic to track progress. How to review (production / cloze / rereading?) and review timing (SRS?) need to be thought of.

The goal is reading ease and speed, rather than amount of books. (N+1 is better.) Comprehension is important, but not a primary target.

Hi everyone!

This is my first time doing a reading challenge like this (at least as far as I remember ). I will not read a novel or manga or anything. Instead, since I’ve only just picked up my Japanese learning again, my goal is to read at least 1 sentence every single day.

This is also my first time using this template - how do I add the tick for completion? Just delete the box (the two brackets really) and add… what?

they are clickable! even without going into the edit menu, or you can put an x in them

[ ] [x]

Some people do also replace them with emotes for what they are reading on that particular day too, so you really can do whatever you feel like!

I can’t wait to join this challenge again. Last time I fell off pretty hard without enough motivation to pick me up again, but this time I am very hyped to try again! Currently reading とにかくかわいい since it’s free on Bookwalker, but gonna have to switch starting tomorrow.

I definitely want to update here regularly and complete my goals for this summer :sunny: :beach_umbrella:

(It’s kinda scary to set goals since it’s a lot more confronting, but I noticed I don’t really get anywhere without them and keeping track of stuff) :face_exhaling:

So my 3 big goals this Summer!

Goals
  1. Read a chapter of any Manga each day

  2. Read at least one Chapter from a book or light novel

  3. Read a chapter without furigana attached

I’m not going to bother with a calendar because I know I won’t have the time to update daily anyway. But the goal is to get something read and at least keep up on two book clubs and complete my daily manga reading on Line Manga if I don’t have the time to invest in reading one of the novels.

I do enjoy reading other readers’ updates especially if we’re reading the same thing. It’s quite motivational.

Currently Reading:
コンピに人間 12%
あん 6%
予言の島 2%
かがみの孤城 25%

Challenge Plan

Plan

My plan for this challenge is to focus on reading, not specifically reading in Japanese. Meaning even if I read books/stories in English or Swedish, I will count it and update (if I want to). And that is partly because the two main things I’m reading in Japanese right now can feel a lot like deciphering or I’m reading material I’ve seen a hundred times (anime). Both of which takes away from the enjoyment of getting lost in the story.

Also, I’ve spent the past six months (aka the previous two challenges) trying to get both Japanese reading and general fiction reading (99% in English) going together and mostly failing at both. While there are only small pockets of Japanese reading that feels like regular reading (aka no to only a few lookups per book/volume), I want to start treating it as regular reading. Eventually it will be. If starting now helps me get a regular reading habit, then I’m going for it.

Maybe it doesn’t work, but I’ll try.

For my yearly goals, I’m 1 manga volume behind, which is basically nothing. For my VN and book (in Japanese) goals, I feel like I’m one book or VN behind, since I’m reading two of each. That will be a bigger hurdle to clear for sure. For my regular (mostly English) reading of 1 book per week, I’m 10 books behind. But I will be counting any books I read in Japanese for it, and will also count the grammar dictionary (if I finish it from front to back), because I’ve always included non-fiction. I’m also not worried about the English reading, considering I finished most of my currently finished 16 books in a 3 week span. So if I get into another binge, I can catch up easily.
