Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Single Day” Challenge, Fall 2022 Edition! :maple_leaf: :fallen_leaf: The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing…fall (or autumn if you prefer) is here! :raccoon: We all know that fall can be a busier time of year, making it harder to build or maintain that Japanese reading habit. What better way to keep your motivation up than to join this thread of lovely like-minded readers? If you missed the previous Read Every Day challenges, feel free to jump in on this one! We would love to have more people join in on the fun and experience the magic of the challenge :sparkles: A little history behind this challenge: last summer, @Redglare had the awesome idea of doing a “Read Every Day” challenge, where we challenged ourselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months - we liked this challenge so much that we decided to make it a recurring thing! Now we’re more than one year in, and the challenge is still going strong  Every challenge thread has its own special flavor, but the one thing they always have in common is being positive, encouraging, and fun! There are also usually some cute manga involved  Archive of Past Challenge Threads Read every day challenge - Summer 2021 :beach_umbrella::beach_umbrella: Read every day challenge - Fall 2021 :maple_leaf::fallen_leaf::raccoon: Read every day challenge - Winter 2022 :snowman_with_snow::snowflake: Read every day challenge - Spring 2022 :cherry_blossom: :seedling: Read every day challenge - Summer 2022 :beach_umbrella: :sunny: Why is this challenge so special, or what makes it unique? Well, we think it’s a combination of the short/limited time frame, the habit-focused (versus output-focused) approach to the goal of “reading more,” and the general atmosphere of camaraderie and community spirit that’s been present in each challenge thread thus far ^^ I can say from personal experience that these challenges have helped me read way more than I would have otherwise, and many people (including myself) have noticed significant growth in reading speed and/or stamina while participating in the challenges. Whether you are an expert reader already or a new reader just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge! To quote @Redglare: This is a thread for people who: :bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this fall :bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension :bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress :bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books: Time frame: October 1 - November 30 This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! This thread will be up and running until the end of December, so you can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you. Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, Japanese webpages/blogs, or Japanese games - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer: “Reading” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated - for example, some people have counted reading Japanese subtitles as reading some days. In general, we are a pretty flexible and forgiving bunch  Threads worth checking out I recommend checking out The News Reading Challenge thread if you’d like to read news articles every day, but you are of course welcome to post about it in this thread too if you’d like to. The "news reading" challenge 🗞 If you don’t know where to find reading material I recommend checking out the Immersion/Reading section of the following thread: The Ultimate Additional Japanese Resources List! There’s also quite a few book clubs here on the forum, some of them have vocab lists which can make for an easier reading experience. A list of book clubs can be found here: Master List of Book Clubs poll Sonny the Durtanuki says, let’s get reading! (Our lovable mascot, created by @Axazel) [4C07F27B-6A3F-4475-B3C4-6AFAD6625894]

November 3rd :maple_leaf:Home post:maple_leaf: Aria: the masterpiece volume 1 – progress report Yesterday: read up to page 21 Today: read up to page 26 Didn’t have a lot of time today, so I only managed to read 5 pages. Not sure if tomorrow will be any different because it doesn’t look like I’ll have much time either. Oh well, little progress is still progress. Mini spoiler: Some words of note 何となく for some reason or another 漕ぐ to row, to paddle 見習い apprenticeship

:maple_leaf: :jack_o_lantern: :snowflake: :christmas_tree: November 3 :christmas_tree: :snowflake: :jack_o_lantern: :maple_leaf: Home Post 夜カフェ :cake: Read what felt like the second half of chapter 11, but I still have 4ish pages left. I find my comfortable limit for Yorucafe is about 11 pages, and considering the chapter is 26 pages, that kinda checks out. Chapter 12 is only like 6 pages and the last one in the volume, so I’ll probably finish it tomorrow. Loopers might manage to edge into this week, aka Sunday, but more likely it’ll be Monday after finishing the next book club week’s reading of Orange. Although I believe the next BBC pick is starting on Saturday, so maybe I’ll have to take care of that too; I’ll see what I feel like. Don’t know why we’re skipping having a break between books, but :woman_shrugging: Replies [image] enbyboiwonder: I also started 僕らの食卓 That looks super cute.

November 3 :heavy_check_mark: :tornado: : うずまき, pages 46-205 (end) Finished the first volume of Junji Ito’s うずまき. That was one crazy story, or rather, several crazy stories in a town cursed by …spirals. I started it yesterday on a whim, and it was a fun ride. Not as scary as I expected (I realize I say that a lot, maybe I’m fearless after all? :joy:), but there were definitely some gruesome images and fates. The あとがき was quite humorous, surprisingly. I’m thinking his manga about his cats must be worth checking out. I also wanted to read his 人間椅子 adaptation, but the only way I can find it in ebook form is in a 277-page quite expensive collection. It can wait. It’s not like I’ve run out of things to read. :books:

Home post :bookmark: Nov 3 :maple_leaf::fallen_leaf: ・本好きの下剋上 12 (17% → 24%) The development in this book is going great, I like :+1: What can I say, I’m really enjoying this series. [image] Book9: Don’t know why we’re skipping having a break between books, but :woman_shrugging: Curiosity got the better of me, I posted a question :caught_durtling:

[image] pm215: Soseki seated at a desk large enough to lie down on Thanks for sharing these bits of interesting info! When reading I do wonder where Soseki drew some of his inspirations from when the details seem rather specific. Like at the moment there’s been some comparing the East and the West (with the East usually coming out more favourable in these conversations), and I wonder if it’s a reflection of his time spent in the UK. Since his leaving the UK was only two years prior to him writing Wagahai and, if I remember, he really disliked his time in London. [image] pm215: the moustache I will look forward to seeing mention of this legendary moustache

[image] Redglare: Curiosity got the better of me, I posted a question :caught_durtling: Well then, I guess I’ll :eyes: Saw Harvestella had a demo, so decided why not try it? And why not in Japanese (the language it was made in, pretty sure)? The font used is… terrible. xD I had to kinda draw な in the air to figure out that was what it was. そ was even worse since it kinda looks like て but with horns. >_<’ Seems to be fine for katakana and kanji though, only hiragana is a mess. At least I could figure it out. I didn’t play that far yet. If I understood correctly, the demo lets you play through chapter 2 of the story. But I could have gotten that wrong. It did mention something about 15 game days too, but I wasn’t sure if that was the max amount of days you could play, or if it was 15 days after finishing chapter 2. So yeah, not sure. Didn’t seem that difficult yet, but I’ve barely begun.

[image] Zakarius: Like at the moment there’s been some comparing the East and the West (with the East usually coming out more favourable in these conversations), and I wonder if it’s a reflection of his time spent in the UK. Since his leaving the UK was only two years prior to him writing Wagahai and, if I remember, he really disliked his time in London. That must have been part of what formed his opinion, but also my guess is that for pretty much the entirety of his life comparisons between East and West would have been a standard topic of debate. That period of Japanese history was a massive societal revolution and influx of Western ideas, inventions and customs that touched every aspect of peoples’ lives[*] – everybody would have had a view on how much of it was necessary, what parts were going too far, often nostalgia or regret for what was disappearing. And it wasn’t merely rapid change, but rapid change forced by outside pressures, so it would have been tied up with questions of national identity too. [*] applies more strongly to the more educated and urban population. If you were a peasant out in the back end of nowhere then your life was a lot less affected (i.e. remained terrible grinding poverty pretty much up to the end of the second world war), though there were some changes like the opening up of factory work. Mikiso Hane’s Peasants, Rebels, Women, and Outcastes is good on the social history of the rural population at this time. Conversely, Seidensticker’s Low City, High City covers the changes a Tokyo resident would have seen.

Main Post On November the 3rd I: Took some more notes on わんわん探偵団。:dog2:

Today I read a chapter of Flying Witch. I’m really enjoying this series so far, it feels kind of cosy and I think Chinatsu is a really cute character
