Not much time for reading today, spent an annoying amount of time preparing my tax return.

I spent a good 2 hours working on getting my old kindle set up for my next series (as much as I love physical media, I am a mere mortal with a limited amount of shelf space), and I think I finally got it working how I wanted. Got volumes 1-14 of からかい上手の高木さん set up and ready to go as soon as I finish よつばと! I was going to do しろくまカフェ next, but that got bumped up to level 19 on Natively. Doesn’t make a huge difference, because I was planning to read them both anyway. I also have a trip coming up that will be easier to pack an e-book reader for, so it just worked out this way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Read all of よつばと!volume 12! (Chapters 77-82) Very cozy volume. The Halloween chapter was already excellent, and then throw the whole camping adventure on there too? Flawless. I normally love going camping in the early fall after it starts getting a little cold, but kinda missed my chance this year because of all the smoke. Now it’s rain season here, and probably won’t get another nice crisp day until next year :sob: I will just have to live vicariously through よつば and the gang until then.
I also put on this fall video game music mix while I was reading, 10/10 autumnal experience.

Good Words

結ぶ「むすぶ」ー to tie
うまい棒「うまいぼう」ー brand of puffed corn snack (yet more snacks for the list)
かぶる ー to be similar (many definitions, but here it’s about beef and chicken)

花瓶 「かびん」ー flower vase
絵の具「えのぐ」ー paint
寄る「よる」ー to draw near, to approach
記念 「きねん」ー memento
ピリ辛「ぴりから」ー spicy
反撃「はんげき」ー counterattack
鬼ごっこ「おにごっこ」ー tag (playing demons that’s so cute :sob: )
むささび ー Japanese Flying Squirrel
悪戯 「いたずら」ー mischief; prank; trick;
そっくり ー spitting image of
油性「ゆせい」ー oil based
させて頂く 「させていただく」ー to have the privilege of doing (humble language)|
斜め「ななめ」ー slanting
揺れる「ゆれる」ー to shake, to sway
我慢「がまん」ー endurance, patience
炊く「たく」ー to boil, to simmer
キツツキ ー woodpecker
燃える「もえる」ー to burn
柔らかい「やわわらかい」ー tender, soft

not from よつばと!, but while i was looking up something else I saw that thermoses can be called “magic bottles” ー 魔法瓶「まほうびん」

Wagahai-cat is disappointed that he is not a tiger.

In other news I bought Sigh’s latest album Shiki today, and all the song titles are in kanji, so that’s been fun to try and work out what they all mean.

:open_book: Back to my Home Post

Today’s story by DrDru was about things you could see or hear. Which animals can you see, what noises do they make?

I found a phrase in it that I want to write down and memorize, because I find that it could be useful:

  • (ひだり)(がわ)から(みぎ)(がわ)()かって (from left to right)

and I suppose its opposite:

  • (みぎ)(がわ)から(ひだり)(がわ)()かって (from right to left)

准教授・高槻彰良の推察, vol2 69 pages

The storyline that stopped abruptly in the previous volume was resolved, and we learn some more about the main character’s past. You’d think that knowing when people are lying would be a cool talent to have, but the way he tells it, it’s made obvious why it’s such a burden, more a curse than a gift.

The characters’ backgrounds are very interesting, but I’m also loving the lectures on folklore. The next chapter is about 神隠し, or “being spirited away”. The professor gives a lecture on exactly this, then wouldn’t you know it, there’s a 神隠し case to investigate.

I read 4 pages of ごんぎつね and finished up chapter 4. It looks like I’m a couple pages from the end. Chapter 5 is one page, and chapter 6 is two pages. Just a little more to go!

Summary

So far, from what I’ve understood of the story, ごん has been leaving little gifts of 栗 (くり - Japanese chestnuts) and まつたけ (matsutake, a type of mushroom) by 兵十’s house. 兵十 is obviously confused by this and talks about it with 加助 (かすけ). Some stuff happens in the meantime (I’m honestly not too sure what happened on one of the pages), and 加助 tells 兵十 that he thinks God must’ve given 兵十 the gifts. ごん overhears this and gets angry because they’re thanking the wrong person for the gifts. I’m not sure I read this right, but I think 兵十 and 加助 are going to try to catch ごん the next morning when he drops off the chestnuts and mushrooms.

ニャンキーズ two (because discourse can’t handle digits) 43 - 83

Well some of my fears were assuaged but then the boss of the rival gang non consensually kissed Ryusei and I think asked him out/offered to have his kids?? Something of that nature, which does not leave the best taste in my mouth.

I really want to ramp up my reading again to finish 2 vol weekly.

Day 24:

Priority: :houses: 青桐. Always good for the book I read right before bed to make me ponder my own mortality.

Free choice: :mag: 硝子の塔の殺人. Excuse me, but I believe the next victim I ordered was 加々見?

Read-aloud: :volleyball: ハイキュー 5 with Bri and @tiny_river_otter . Next up: 伊達工!

Mandarin?!: :merperson: 伯爵与妖精 1. Just the tiniest little bit, which I won’t disclaim again because any Mandarin reading is progress. Hm, if I’m reading the same book in two different languages, should I use the same emoji? No, you’re right, it needs its own emoji. (edits in a merperson)

October 25th!

I read more than I expected to today.
First I read the first chapter of Volume 9 of Teasing Master Takagi-san, which was a cute story.
Then I planned to read about half of the first chapter of Volume 4 of Orange, but I got wrapped up in the story and ended up reading the whole chapter instead.

I’m dealing with a migraine onset (took my migraine pill so fingers crossed it kicks it!) so probably no reading for me tonight, but I amused myself by downloading a ridiculous number of epub reading apps on iOS and testing my books on them.

I had no idea Japanese text could fail to render in so many ways. It was fascinating. The fact that so many failed differently means the underlying text handling is different, which intrigues me.

But, I think I found one that fits all my needs?! Neat seems to do everything I want. It shows Japanese text without garbling it. It allows me to take notes and access them easily. It lets me us the iOS dictionary.

It does chop pictures up a bit and can’t render Japanese text vertically, but after trying 10(?) e-readers this is honestly the cream of the crop. I won’t complain. :joy:

Read more ブルーロック again, business as usual. I finished up volume 7 and started on volume 8; I’m getting close enough to the end of the volumes I have that I’m seriously considering ordering the rest, and mandarake talking about how yen’s weak so it’s a great time to buy isn’t helping me restrain myself :joy: so we’ll see how that goes!

October 25th:
:yellow_square: 名探偵コナン (69% → 74%)

Short read today. Conan got carried away again and voiced (very important and useful) questions out loud, to the chagrin of Ran’s father. I’m waiting to see if he’ll put his new gadget to use at some point during this case.

In other news, I succumbed to the call: the call of the Bookwalker coin back sale. A couple of my purchases were discounted, too, and a part of my brain couldn’t help but snag a sweet deal. Also, since there’s pretty much zero shelf space left in my home, going digital just makes more sense right now (not that lack of shelving’s ever stopped me before, but I digress).

Ah, the guilt of spending more money on books when you still have plenty that are unread. Such is the torment of a bookworm’s life. :weary:

List of purchases, for those curious

ふじと南極なかまたち(上 and 下)
medium 霊媒探偵城塚翡翠
カルト宗教信じてました。 and the sequel volume カルト宗教やめました。
おばちゃんたちのいるところ Where The Wild Ladies Are
カレーライスと日本人 (both because I haven’t read any non-fiction books in Japanese yet and I love curry rice)

:exploding_head: Clearly your priorities are different from mine
I’m so hooked on vertical writing, I even installed an app that let me read Aozora pages vertically :woman_shrugging:

But for me the biggest question is, where do you get Japanese ePub from? I only know about vendors that lock you into their own app, so there is no (straightforward/easy/legal?) way of getting an ePub from them. (This is different from some German / international vendors where I can buy German or English books as ePub even without DRM.)

Those are sooo hard to withstand, aren’t they
I’m happy to report that I got out of it with only 7 books in my cart  so I pretty much came away unscathed

5 are from my ongoing F&B series, one that I want to propose to IBC and one from the Mystery book club that was (a) discounted on top of the sale and (b) mentions 黒い森 in its title so I need to find out whether it’s just talking about a black forest or about THE Blackforest (which is, like, 10 km from where I live :exploding_head:). Looking at the cover picture it might as well be the latter, so I’m keen to find out more!

I bought a few too - but 2 were for upcoming book clubs and I think the rest were more volumes of various series I’m reading. And one which I want to propose for BBC once I figure out how to do that!

Reading has not been extensive today - I’ve read 2 (edit:3) pages of 夜カフェ. But I’m not expecting much of the next few days - I’m only at home until Sunday morning (having got home Monday morning) and need to prepare my house for house sitters. I’ll be away for 4 weeks for work, back for 6 days then go overseas for another 7 weeks plus :anguished: Also I’m working an 11 hour shift from home tomorrow then another 2 hours…

I need to finish Tugumi but I’m taking it with me - actually taking it home  The library will finally get their book back.

I think things would be chaotic enough without having sort of adopted a stray cat who has now been persuaded she’s an indoor cat. She’s so sweet, but every now and then she freaks out suddenly and lashes out. The day I got back she scratched me in the face - again. But hasn’t done it since. I’m just worried for my house sitters. Hopefully she’ll behave. In 6 months she’s gone from not approaching humans to sleeping on my bed.

Had a major headache, so I took in some ibuprofen and rested. Ended up falling in sleep and then waking up at 3 am from a nightmare. Decided to read then (it still counts for the streak!) and surprised myself by reading two sections/chapters of 時をかける少女. Had to stop myself from reading more, as there doesn’t seem like any good stopping points going forward. That said didn’t get in any reviews/lessons in yesterday with jpdb, so today we picking up more cards.
