📚 📚 Read Japanese Every Day Challenge - Summer 2024 🏖 🍉 🏏

:books: :books: :books: Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Day” Challenge, Summer 2024 Edition! :beach_umbrella: :watermelon: :cricket_bat_and_ball:

Hello! Japan is heating up and the rainy season seems finally ready to start. It might be different in other parts of the world, but no matter what the weather, it’s always a good day to be reading.

This Season's Emoji Explanation

Japan has a distinct sea and mountain season and people almost religiously follow it, so you won’t often find people at the beach or hiking outside of that established season. Summer squarely falls in it, so this time we’ve got a beach emoji. And what’s the most Japanese thing you can do at a beach? Break open a watermelon. Hence our middle emoji. Somehow there’s no baseball bat emoji, so cricket will have to do. Now we have a proper スイカ割り emoji set. Get cracking those books watermelons open.

Where does this challenge come from?

Back in the summer of 2021, @Redglare had the great idea of a “Read Every Day” challenge, in which participants challenged themselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months. Since then and until winter 2024, @Redglare and @windupbird have hosted this challenge every season. Thanks to them, many of us have improved our Japanese and lifestyles! You might notice that I am neither a bird nor glare. I offered to take over the challenge since they’re quite busy (お疲れ様!), but of course they’re welcome to take it back at any time if they want to. I’ll do my best to keep up the encouragement!

Please help us keep this a positive, encouraging, and fun space! Please feel free to bribe encourage fellow participants with cute pet and animal photos or recipes even.

While the name of the challenge is “Read Every Day,” you may have noticed that it also has a season attached. That’s because each challenge only lasts 2 months. Forever would be a long commitment. By having clear start and end dates, it becomes a much more manageable goal. At the end of the challenge, please consider what worked or didn’t work for you. Did you have fun? Then you can take a break or decide to keep going.

Also, please don’t worry about starting late or not completing the challenge! Life happens. This is an open opportunity for everyone who wants to set some reading goals. Everyone is welcome. Some participants have even started tracking their reading in other languages.

As @Redglare has said:

This is a thread for people who:
:bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this fall
:bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books:

To add onto that, this is also a thread for people who want to track or talk about their reading too. If you’d like a computer to do most of your tracking, please check out Natively.

Time frame: July 1 - August 30

Again, late starts are totally welcome! Usually people will continue posting through September and some may give some updates even later. It’s all good! You can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you. Personally, I usually extend my reading into the 3rd month since I find these challenges have been great at helping me reach my annual reading goals.

As @windupbird has said

Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, Japanese webpages/blogs, or Japanese games - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer: “Reading” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated - for example, some people have counted reading Japanese subtitles as reading some days. In general, we are a pretty flexible and forgiving bunch

Reading the same book with others can be pretty motivating. It’s also easier to ask about grammar or vocab, so how about joining a book club? If you don’t want to join, you could always take it as a recommended book instead. A list of book clubs can be found here:

I haven’t been good at the (every day) part of the challenge, but I still like tracking my reading and want to get better at reading more, and I’m going to actually finish something (or multiple somethings) this challenge! I also think it’s helpful for me to do the whole “write new words down” thing even if I’m not exactly dumping them into SRS.

It’s hard to promise that I’ll get better about making this a daily habit, but I won’t get anywhere if I don’t try, and maybe I can aim for more days covered than last challenge instead.

Things I’ve been working on from last challenge:

  • 原罪物語 -罪-
  • ノーゲーム・ノーライフ 1
  • VA-11 Hall-A
  • Little Witch in the Woods (I’m definitely getting close to the end here)

Hi all - I’m going to tentatively give this a go, even tho I’m just a baby Level 4… My expectations will have to be low, as I’ll be just trying to read anything I can that is comprehensible to me!

But I have some beginner readers on Kindle and my kiddo brought back a couple of JP language mangas from our recent trip. And I’m a voracious reader of katakana & hiragana found in ingredients lists on the side of food packets :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

But I’m doing my Wanikani and Duolingo daily and anything outside of that I’ll count towards my progress if that’s ok :raised_hands:

I won’t lie - it’s hard going  - I’m basically looking up every other word in Shirabe Jisho, but I’m enjoying the bringing to life of something previously unknowable to me!

Update. I’m good at remembering to read each day - but bad at updating this post :joy: I’m getting the hang of ドラえもん but still slow going!

Thanks for arranging another season of the challenge, @DIO-Berry! :durtle_love: :heart_hands:

I’ll join this time as well :high_touch: I thought I was on a roll having just resumed where I left off with the Honzuki series, but suddenly my friends recommended me an English series which got me hooked and which I’m currently still reading (A Court of Thorns and Roses). And then there was packing and cleaning and moving to a new place and days where I didn’t do reviews on jpdb or even use my laptop at all. In other words, life happened. I can’t remember the last time I’ve taken such a long break from reading books in Japanese, June is very blank so far in my box calendar. But since it’s the “off-month” of the challenge anyway, I don’t mind.

Hopefully, I’ll get back on track in this new challenge!
