Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Single Day” Challenge, Fall 2022 Edition! :maple_leaf: :fallen_leaf: The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing…fall (or autumn if you prefer) is here! :raccoon: We all know that fall can be a busier time of year, making it harder to build or maintain that Japanese reading habit. What better way to keep your motivation up than to join this thread of lovely like-minded readers? If you missed the previous Read Every Day challenges, feel free to jump in on this one! We would love to have more people join in on the fun and experience the magic of the challenge :sparkles: A little history behind this challenge: last summer, @Redglare had the awesome idea of doing a “Read Every Day” challenge, where we challenged ourselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months - we liked this challenge so much that we decided to make it a recurring thing! Now we’re more than one year in, and the challenge is still going strong  Every challenge thread has its own special flavor, but the one thing they always have in common is being positive, encouraging, and fun! There are also usually some cute manga involved  Archive of Past Challenge Threads Read every day challenge - Summer 2021 :beach_umbrella::beach_umbrella: Read every day challenge - Fall 2021 :maple_leaf::fallen_leaf::raccoon: Read every day challenge - Winter 2022 :snowman_with_snow::snowflake: Read every day challenge - Spring 2022 :cherry_blossom: :seedling: Read every day challenge - Summer 2022 :beach_umbrella: :sunny: Why is this challenge so special, or what makes it unique? Well, we think it’s a combination of the short/limited time frame, the habit-focused (versus output-focused) approach to the goal of “reading more,” and the general atmosphere of camaraderie and community spirit that’s been present in each challenge thread thus far ^^ I can say from personal experience that these challenges have helped me read way more than I would have otherwise, and many people (including myself) have noticed significant growth in reading speed and/or stamina while participating in the challenges. Whether you are an expert reader already or a new reader just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge! To quote @Redglare: This is a thread for people who: :bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this fall :bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension :bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress :bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books: Time frame: October 1 - November 30 This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! This thread will be up and running until the end of December, so you can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you. Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, Japanese webpages/blogs, or Japanese games - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer: “Reading” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated - for example, some people have counted reading Japanese subtitles as reading some days. In general, we are a pretty flexible and forgiving bunch  Threads worth checking out I recommend checking out The News Reading Challenge thread if you’d like to read news articles every day, but you are of course welcome to post about it in this thread too if you’d like to. The "news reading" challenge 🗞 If you don’t know where to find reading material I recommend checking out the Immersion/Reading section of the following thread: The Ultimate Additional Japanese Resources List! There’s also quite a few book clubs here on the forum, some of them have vocab lists which can make for an easier reading experience. A list of book clubs can be found here: Master List of Book Clubs poll Sonny the Durtanuki says, let’s get reading! (Our lovable mascot, created by @Axazel) [4C07F27B-6A3F-4475-B3C4-6AFAD6625894]

:snowflake: :christmas_tree: December 6th :christmas_tree: :snowflake: (Home Post Link) I joined a japanese discord server for a niche topic today expecting to just be able to lurk and observe but got pulled into introducing myself and talking a bit. Haven’t really done a lot of output before with native speakers so that was a bit terrifying  but I think it worked out. I’ve joined some larger servers before and just not ended up doing much with them because the constant text was moving too fast for me to read/respond to, but this server is a lot smaller and more chill so I should have a chance to take my time. I won’t count it as reading for this, but that’ll probably be going on in the background every day. Read: NHK News Web Easy: すばらしい秋田犬を選ぶ大会 170匹ぐらいが集まるイジらないで、長瀞さん ch 118 - forgot s2 was starting so soon! also a good ch. ホリミヤ ch 19 Japanese Slang Review November 2022 Good Words NHK 天然記念物「てんねんきねんぶつ」ー protected species 保存会「ほぞんかい」ー preservation society 増やし「ふやし」ー多くする年齢「ねんれい」ー age; years 雄「おす」ー male (animal/plant) 雌「めす」ー female (animal/plant) 長瀞さん臨時「りんじ」ー temporary, provisional 軍団「ぐんだん」ー army 視姦「しかん」ー oogling, staring (lecherously) 今更「いまさら」ー now (when it is already far too late) 威嚇「いかく」ー threat, intimidation ホリミヤ躊躇「ちゅうちょ」ー hesitation 暴力的「ぼうりょくてき」ー violence

December 6th :snowflake: :christmas_tree:Home post:christmas_tree::snowflake: Card Captor Sakura volume 2 or Aria: the masterpiece volume 2 – progress report Yesterday: Read up to page 159 of Aria: the masterpiece volume 2, finished chapter 14. Today: Read up to page 166. Only a tiny read because I didn’t have much time today – better than nothing, I suppose (?) Word or expression of the day: 開催 - (かいさい) - holding (exhibition, etc.); opening; hosting (e.g. sports event) Correction for last post’s word of the day: [image] polv: Probably 雨宿(あまやど)り. I learnt the other day in combination with 雨漏(あまも)り. I knew another one with this reading beforehand – 雨音(あまおと). Thank you for your correction,@polv. So it’s 雨宿り (あまやどり), after all.

:books: 12月06日うたわれるもの Quick update today :bed: .

December 6 :heavy_check_mark: :tophat: :open_umbrella: 叙述トリック短編集 , 20-25% 体育館の殺人, 48-53% The advent reading is taking up most of my reading time, but I did manage to finish this week’s 体育館の殺人 portion. I should be reading おいしいごはんが食べられますように or おばちゃんたちのいるところ tomorrow. But… [image] pocketcat: If you purchased anything you don’t lose access to it, and if you find you want it in the future you can re-subscribe. The thing is the audiobook was free with my Audible trial. So unless I start paying I lose access to it. I’d happily pay if I thought I’d keep listening to audiobooks, but I’m not sure that’s very likely. I started the subscription from my regular Amazon account too, so I don’t even think there will be all that many Japanese audiobooks available. Anyway, to pay more than double for a book I’m not very enthusiastic about seems like a waste. So I’m thinking I have two choices: Either read the rest of the book without audio, or try and finish the book before the trial period runs out. Tough choice.

Haven’t really done a lot of output before with native speakers so that was a bit terrifying  Ooh like a native server, not a learners one? That’s so exciting! I tried a learner based one but I felt very out of place (most of the server was in their teens/very early 20s and I’m in my 30s  ). [image] omk3: I should be reading おいしいごはんが食べられますように or おばちゃんたちのいるところ tomorrow. But… Don’t feel bad, I pushed it off til January :joy: [image] omk3: I started the subscription from my regular Amazon account too, so I don’t even think there will be all that many Japanese audiobooks available. So I’m thinking I have two choices: Either read the rest of the book without audio, or try and finish the book before the trial period runs out. Tough choice. I’m not sure about all countries, but American Audible started out with only a few titles but ended up releasing a TON maybe 6mon-year ago? But it’s near impossible to find in the app itself - you have to do desktop. I hope this link works for you, but if not I went Browse → Mystery & Thrillers → All (it’s top right corner-ish) → Scroll down to language selection. I have 668 JP language results for that category. If you do opt to just speed run the rest of the book you’ll be joining 2-3 other people. I think 体育館の殺人 was too easy, although I had been hoping an easier book would attract more readers

Replies Yep! It’s a native server specifically for a fan product plush of an older game series (ふもふも from the 東方 series), so i thiiink most of the people are around my age or a little older (mid/late 20s). Lots of people are posting stuff that makes me think they are old enough to have financial and travel independence, at least (there’s a whole channel for PC building lmao). They also seem to take their rules and community pretty seriously, which I imagine was to discourage the younger shitposting types. There are a couple other english speakers like me, but I’d say probably 98% of the users are japanese speakers. Definitely a little intimidating, but gotta jump in the water at some point, right? I am absolutely enthralled and delighted by people who post pictures of their lil plushies traveling and doing things and I also absolutely could not explain why. It seems like it should be such an odd thing but I can’t tear my eyes away. Completely fascinated by this behavior. [image] Just hangin out with the penguins [image] Or out climbing mountains [image] Or just cooking some food at home Delightful.

:laptop: Home :frog: December 6 人間椅子 - ジョジョの奇妙な冒険54 34 - 115 I managed to stop my procrastination spiral and then I wanted to keep reading so much. >-< I kept accidently skipping text bubbles and having to go back because I remember those bits of conversation from the anime and really wanted to get to the cool parts of this fight. I forced myself to slow down and literally point at the bubbles so I’d read them. I think it worked. Hopefully lol. Not sure how much I’ll be able to read soon as work deadlines mean I’ll probably be putting in a considerable amount of overtime.

I finished 異世界の名探偵. I thought I had 40 pages to go, but I instead had several blank pages and then the prologue to the next volume. I put my review on Natively but overall: For someone who isn’t much into light novels, it was alright, the weird tone switch at the end aside. The mystery was decent and the characters had some depth which I appreciated. I’d recommend it for anyone who likes fantasy light novels and wants a mystery, I suppose. I’m now down to 黄金仮面 (17% done), 自殺行き往復切符 (27% done), and 秋の牢獄 (63% done) for my non-book club, non-Advent reading. Looking very doable to wrap the year without a mad rush, especially as the second book is quite a breezy read for me. [image] javerend: Delightful. It’s the little things isn’t it? :joy:

December 6 :maple_leaf: Home Post Accidentally made even less time for reading today  it was just kind of a sleepy day though so it’s all good, still got in a few pages of ブルーロック for the sake of it

Today I read Chapter 38 of Shadows House. The first page of the next chapter looks interesting, so I’m looking forward to reading more at the weekend!
