Yay, the reading challenge is here yet again! Always love participating and seeing what everyone’s got their eyeballs in.
Per the title, I want to try having a reading theme for October (probably not for November, but you never know). The theme, naturally, is “Halloween.” Basically, I want to focus on reading things that are ハロウィンっぽい. They don’t have to be dark, per se––just things that have a spooky vibe or elements that evoke Halloween, like witches. The two things I’m currently thinking of are とつくにの少女1 and 魔女の宅急便. However, I’m certainly open to suggestions! I don’t know how far I’ll get when it comes to finishing these for October, so it’s entirely possible the theme will end up continuing into November.
First time I participate in a challenge here I’m so excited
I’ll be reading from Satori reader.
My current goal is to read for at least 20 minutes a day, I know it’s not much but a good start.
Thanks @windupbird for the challenge.

Looking forward to participating for the first time!
I will be reading part two and three of この素晴らしい世界に爆焔を and maybe some manga in between.
My goal for now is to try and read every day, even if I only manage to go through a few pages.
First and foremost, thanks so much again for hosting the thread @windupbird <3 .
There’s always something I change in every challenge at this point I think, but bit by bit I’m discovering how I like to do things, what seems to be effective for me and how I want to go forward. Starting from this challenge I won’t be using an everyday layout anymore and I won’t be updating checkboxes in a calendar either, I’ve gotten rid of it altogether. This “off” month I’ve been experimenting with it and the only change I’ve seen is a positive one, with a lot less pressure to perform and no difference in productivity. I think I can do this now precisely because at this point after more than a year of daily challenges, the habit seems to be pretty ingrained and I always get back to it easily when I take a “break”, which is never really a complete break anyway. I’m not sure if this could have worked back then, but I’m grateful it does now. The only thing I will try to achieve is 10 new words in Anki everyday, which has been very easy so far because I almost always make enough cards in advance from what I play anyway. I’d be super happy if at the very minimum I can do that on the days that I don’t do anything else. It’s also not a limit in any way, just a consistent minimum, while still playing/reading for as long as I want. This way I’ll also mix a low amount of SRS with much more immersion, which is what I’ve been aiming for for a while already. I’m quite happy with this new plan.
I will still update virtually everyday even if no calendar, because as always the activity and interaction of this thread always pushes me forward and it’s fun . Good luck to everyone! Here we go again.
This month is where I started last year so this challenge is my anniversary challenge. I’m still reading manga but my reading pace has increased since last year (from barely 2 volumes in the first challenge to 4 in the last challenge). Slowly but surely, my goal of reading manga in its original language is coming to fruition. (Well, technically, I’ve already met that goal but the comprehension fluency isn’t there yet.) So far, it’s only been my kanji recognition that has improved tremendously but that’s the first step in comprehending Japanese, right?
It’s technically still September for me, but I’m in a good place to start so may as well kick off. It’s October already in other time zones, too!
I’m about to go on a trip, and I did not manage to finish 天使の傷跡 on time, so I’m bringing it along. I also need to read the final week of 十角館の殺人事件 which I may or may not do on the ride to my destination. Depends on how pretty the scenery is.
I also started reading 三体 and I’m still in the first few pages. I knew this book would be hard for me, but I’m already pausing to absorb sentences. Maybe it will get smoother after the initial scene setting, but it’s also sci-fi so who knows. The writing style is delightful, though.
It’s my first book in Japanese that’s translated from something not English, so that’s fun, but also challenging. Since my partner is going to be reading the same book in simplified Chinese I expect some confusion as we try to discuss and figure out which characters we’re talking about. My book provides transliterated Chinese names as well as Japanese-ified names. For example:
史強(シー・チアン/し・きょう)
葉哲泰(イエ・ジョータイ/よう・てつたい)
Katakana is the transliteration, hiragana is the Japanese-ified. Given my way I’d just remember the Japanese-ified ones because reading 強 as きょう is a lot more intuitive to me than チアン, but since my partner will only know them by their actual Chinese names I unfortunately can’t do that
I so wish I could do this! However, between work and my regular Japanese study, I know it would make me feel overwhelmed. I look forward to joining you again next summer when I will once again do a self-created intensive study program. In the meantime, I will keep plodding through よつばと whenever I can find the time… Good luck everyone!
I think I’ll join. I skipped summer since I knew I’d be swamped, but I bought a years subscription to satori on a whim and want to get thru most of the content before it clomes up for renewal in spring. Even though I have plenty to read, I also bought the first two manga arcs and first ten light novels for 本好き so I’d better up my reading time or I’ll never burn through my backlog.
I can’t believe we’ve already reached the final challenge of the year!
Today I read Chapter 7 of Volume 2 of Yoru Cafe. As usual, it took me AGES. I always feel immensely pleased with myself when I get to the end of a chapter though
First day completed! Read a few pages of かがみの孤城 (43%).
I’ll be flying 7 hours back to Australia overnight tomorrow, so I’ll see if I have enough energy to read.
I’m usually a lurker so this is my first time writing on the Wanikani community page (so I apologize if I don’t do something correctly) but I’ve been looking for ways to keep myself accountable with improving so I’d love to be a part of this!
Reading challenge: 一年生 なぜ?どうして? みぢかなぎもん
1-2 chapters a day
Today I continued where I left of in DrDru’s stories. This one was about The Hobbit, and this one was about Kim & Chuck in the forset, where Kim fights a wolf (not sure if it was a reference to something). Very fun! But I’m still bad at Katakana, so it was a bit exhausting.
Interesting Kanji: the 赤 in 赤ちゃん (baby). On it’s own it apparently means red, so to me babies are now little red riding hoods, because the story where I learned that Kanji had a wolf in it…
