🎙 📝 Speak/Write Every Day Challenge (Fall-to-Winter 2022) 🍁 ❄

Welcome to the “Speak/Write Every Single Day” Challenge! :maple_leaf: :snowflake:

Speaking is probably my weakest skill when it comes to Japanese. This is a combination of not using it nearly as much as my other skills plus the fact that, for whatever reason, it is extremely intimidating for me to practice. I suspect I’m not alone in feeling this way.

Compared to the Reading or Listening Every Day challenges (started/continued by @Redglare, @windupbird [reading] and @KJules [listening]) I think trying to have a speaking, or even writing, challenge is a tougher sell. Plus, if you wanted to participate in all three, well, that’s a lot to have on your plate. Since both the reading and listening challenges last for two months (in this case, during October and November), this challenge will be for 31 days, running in December (during those challenges’ “off-season”).

The goal of this challenge is to get you out of your comfort zone in a positive and encouraging environment and put all of the vocab and grammar you’ve learned to use. There’s all sorts of ways you can go about participating:

:star2: Wanna try speaking for all 31 days? Go for it!
:star2: Itching to improve your writing skills? Awesome!
:star2: Dying to practice both skills at the same time or interchangeably? You do you!
:star2: Take a class/meet with a tutor and want that to count towards your goal? Excellent!
:star2: Just want to use this challenge to practice your pronunciation or handwriting? Cool!

You can talk or write about anything you like: your day, a book you’re reading, a show you’re watching, your cat, your neighbor’s cat, a story about a tanuki that you made up, or simply practice using new vocabulary. The sky’s the limit!

You can speak or write as much or as little as you desire (though maybe don’t go too overboard with it). Most of the recording tools listed below also have upper limits (5-10 minutes, depending), so there’s zero pressure to speak for any longer than that. You’re also free to adjust the challenge to your own needs: if you want to try speaking on-the-spot, that’s fantastic, but even if you’d prefer writing out what you want to say and then recording it, that’s great, too.

To quote KJules quoting windupbird quoting Redglare (that’s a lot of quoting):

This is a thread for people who:

:bookmark: want to spend more time speaking/writing
:bookmark: want to improve their output abilities
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge!

Time Frame: December 1st to December 31st

Late comers are always welcome!

:studio_microphone: Voice Spice (can share via link)
:studio_microphone: Online Voice Recorder (can download recording)

:star: For download-only tools, you can upload your recordings to a file sharing service and link to them using that, if you so wish. If there are other tools you’d like to share with everyone, let me know and I’ll add them to the list!

:star: There is no pressure to share a recording. Do so only if you feel comfortable. If all you want to do is post a calendar to track your own private speaking/writing practice, that’s 100% okay. What matters most is that you try your best at whatever goal you set for yourself during this challenge.

So I completely bombed this challenge last time I attempted it. So bad. I went and hid in shame of how horrible I was at consistently doing output. But then for November I challenged myself to write every day. Sometimes it was stuff to be corrected by tutors or people online, other times it was emails, sometimes even forum posts! And assuming I don’t totally fall off the wagon tonight I will successfully have output every day in November!

That said, it was hard to consistently do it every day. Way harder than reading or listening every day. So…I’m a maybe. I want to maintain my momentum, but trying to do another solid month might cause some burn out for me given my insane perfectly reasonable reading goals and holiday time constraints.

But I promise to stick around and cheer you all on this time even if I personally bomb it again.

I also fell off the challenge almost immediately, but I’ve been hoping it would come back around. I want to try again, but will likely aim for some kind of weekly goal instead of daily.

I’d love to try this pechakucha format—a presentation of 20 images timed to advance after 20 seconds per slide. I intend to start low, though. Maybe 5 images that advance every 5 seconds. Simple sentences, short presentation.

I was just thinking about my Japanese progress for the year and my goals for next year, and decided I wanted to practice grammar by writing sentences based on the grammar point I studied that day. So this will be a great way to get in the habit! I’ll try to create a main post when I get home from work tonight.

I’m having a weird sense of deja vu that maybe I said this last time and just never did it. We’ll see if I follow through this time.

My goal for this challenge: Write two sentences per day about the new grammar point I study on bunpro that day.

Supplemental goal: improve my handwriting, and write more in general.

I get pretty extensive speaking practice about 3 times per week, so I will not be setting any speaking goals for this month.

Here goes!

I try to be creative when titling these home posts, but I can’t really be bothered right now. My goal is just the basic “get as many check marks as I can” one. Last challenge I managed to do an even number of days for writing and speaking. It’d be kind of cool to achieve that again this time around, though I’d frankly prefer to have more days speaking. We shall see.

(I also just realized I left off the 31st on the calendar template… Fixed now. Sorry also for kind of posting this thread last-minute. Life’s been a lot this past month.)

Congrats on doing so well in November! By all means, don’t overdo it this month if you think it’ll lead to burnout. Just go at whatever pace you can if you wanna participate. (Also, no hiding in shame! You were upfront about how consistent output practice is a struggle for you, so even considering it was a great first step. Besides, look at what you ended up achieving!)

I swear, you always come up with interesting ideas! I’ve never heard of this before, and now I’m intrigued. Maybe I’ll try doing this format at least once. Not sure what I’d potentially present on.

I’m in!
Glad to see this challenge come around again, it was fun last time.
Like the last challenge, I’ll probably mostly just be sticking with writing my daily diary, and sharing a paragraph or so of it.

I’ve been wanting to work more on my output so I’m in, my posts might be on the short side for the first half of the month though. I’m thinking it would be fun to try and write a little bit of a short story everyday and see how that goes. I also want to try doing some more speaking near the end of the month.

I think I mentioned this during the last challenge, but I write a diary daily and once a week I pick one of the last weeks entries to read with my tutor and she corrects my mistakes and we use whatever I wrote about as a conversation topic.
Most of the time, I write my diaries a day behind so today I actually wrote my November 30th diary rather than my December 1st one.
They are rarely interesting, so sorry in advance

I’ve been trying to get back into my previous routine of completing all of my srs before work, and I did it again today! So I wrote my sentences early. Today was 点 meaning aspect or point (of an object or idea).

Thank you so much  Credit to my coworker who found it originally and we used it during a portion of our company retreat last year.

Ideas are easy, it’s the follow-through I struggle with

This is an idea I had around Halloween but never got around to writing. I may or may not have written this while hardcore procrastinating before a test :see_no_evil:

It’s easier for me to speak than write right now, but if I don’t write, it is more difficult to notice mistakes and get corrected.

Not to mention I haven’t done grammar-focused writing yet. (A bigger goal currently isn’t production, but grammar correction.)

Dec 1, Thu of Advent 2022 :christmas_tree: :jp: writing prompt

今日も、久しぶりにLangCorrect.comに訪ねました。

This is a total newbie question, but how do I post that advent calendar into my post? Is it something I can use to check off my progress? I REALLY need to commit to speaking regularly. I’ve been taking classes for the last two and can read and write much better but I’m dismal at speaking and listening comprehension. :woman_facepalming:t2:
