Welcome to the WaniKani forum! We’re happy to have you here :durtle_hello:

If it’s your first time using WaniKani, be sure to check out the Knowledge Guide to get an overview of how the program works!

Before you get into talking with others about your progress, type of resources, movies, games, etc. you’re getting into these days, or simply showing your praise for the Crabigator, we do have some things we want to let you know about. First off:

The WaniKani Community is a public forum, which means that all content you post and contribute here can be found via outside search engines, even without a WaniKani account. With that in mind, remember these points:

  • Do not post anything that you don’t want the public to see associated with your WaniKani username, and refrain from sharing any information that you don’t want to remain online. We may not be able to change or remove your past posts. It is your responsibility to decide what you want to share on here, and once you do, it’ll be out of y/our hands.

  • Do not give personal information to others! Despite how awesome people on the WaniKani forum are, this is still the internet. Be careful both on and off the WaniKani forum.

Secondly, while we’re excited to have you join and participate in the WaniKani Community, there are a few goals we are all working towards to help make the forum a helpful, safe, and enjoyable space for people, and we’d appreciate you helping us work towards these goals. We have guidelines set in place to help us achieve these goals, and you can read them below:

Goal 1 - Creating A Safe & Inclusive Space

We’d like the WaniKani Community to work together in making this place a safe and encouraging space where people from a variety of backgrounds, whose common interest in learning Japanese can come together.

  • Posts supporting racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism or anything that denies someone their humanity will not be tolerated.

  • Harassment, threats, and targeted attacks on individual users will not be tolerated. If you feel another user is targeting you in any way, do not hesitate to send us an email at hello@wanikani.com.

Goal 2 - Maintaining Healthy Discussions

Work together to cultivate an environment where people can discuss various topics in good faith, and be open to different perspectives.

  • Be mindful and sensitive to the fact that people here come from various backgrounds and will have different approaches and perspectives, from learning Japanese to how they live their daily lives. Do not assume the worst of people who may not have the same privileges and/or access to resources you have, or share your perspective.

  • Respect other peoples’ time and interests, and have conversations in good faith. Don’t ask rhetorical questions that will start heated discussions or arguments. Consider whether a discussion would benefit from your input, or whether you would be better off listening.

  • Work to de-escalate. If a conversation is becoming heated, avoid adding to that fire. Know when to step back, take a breath and consider what you are writing. Don’t feel like you have to have the last word or keep posting. If you want to drop out of a conversation that you feel isn’t constructive anymore, say so. If someone else tells you they want to step back from a conversation, respect that decision and drop it as well. If a moderator asks you to move on or drop a conversation, do so.

Goal 3 - Maintaining Healthy Relationships

Respect and recognize others’ boundaries, experiences, traumas and struggles when interacting with the community and when posting.

  • If you choose to discuss sensitive topics such as sex, addictive substances, violence and abuse, etc., please use content warnings. Some of our users are minors, and some may be struggling with some form of trauma, addiction or a combination of the above. Be mindful when you post about them.

Creating content warnings is done either by entering the following or clicking the gear icon on the far right side of the text editor

  • Do not post or link to 18+ material. Additionally, please refrain from ahem, colorful language and keep it PG-13.

Goal 4 - Upholding Community Goals

Work with the moderator team to uphold the Community Goals & Guidelines and keep each other accountable.

  • Everyone is responsible for respecting the community guidelines, and holding each other accountable. If you think there is a post that violates one of the guidelines, please flag it or tag @mods and we’ll review it as soon as possible.

  • Our team is small, so we appreciate all the help we can get in upholding the community goals and guidelines. If there are flags over the weekend, we’ll need a bit of time to catch up on Monday so please keep that in mind if you don’t get an immediate reply. Chances are, we’re helping users with high priority issues by email or chat.

  • What happens if I break the rules?

    • While this is typically case by case, you will be issued a warning privately by a moderator either by email or a private message the first time you break a rule. The next time there’s an issue, your account may be silenced temporarily or permanently. Depending on the severity of the problem, the moderators reserve the right to ban users from the forum.
  • Moderators’ decisions are final. A lot of discussion and time goes into the decisions we make. We do our best to make a fair judgement call for each flag. Please respect the decisions made.

Goal 5 - Preventing Spam & Piracy

Work together to post content that is beneficial to members of the community and is allowed to be shared online.

  • Refrain from spamming and promoting on the forum. If you made an app or resource, we would love to see it! Just make sure to only create one thread and not bump up your own post by commenting on it repeatedly.

  • We ask that you be mindful of the content that you’re posting and make sure that it is something members of the community would be interested in checking out. This includes job postings, downloads, sites, and content that isn’t Japanese-language based. Feel free to reach out to us if you aren’t sure about posting something.

  • Before you post, make sure that everything is legal. We don’t want anything illegal to be shared on the forum, like illegal manga, shows, learning resources, etc. Any illegal activities will not be tolerated.

We’re looking forward to seeing you around these parts! :durtle_noice: If you have any questions, feel free to send us a message over at hello@wanikani.com or send us a chat message on the Dashboard.
