This is true - I feel like I expected the main character to have some sort of sympathetic quality though 
I guess it’s just different than the type of horror I’m used to. I wouldn’t consider myself a horror “fan” by any means but there are some that I like - but all the ones I can think of off the top of my head are ones where “The Horror” is sort of supernatural and conceptualized as something external that the protagonist is fighting against. I’m not used to reading horror from the POV of “The Horror,” so to speak It’s like…reading about serial killers vs. reading from the POV of a serial killer. Two different vibes, one of which I have a way higher tolerance for, apparently
Weirdly, I don’t think that metaphor by itself would have bothered me that much either, it was literally just in the context of the fish 
I wanted to run over there and scoop them up and bring them home with me. Give them to me, I’ll love them
