You’ll notice that many of us like to use pretty calendars to track our progress in “home posts” as well - if you’d like to have a pretty calendar of your own, feel free to use the template in the next post! ^^
Once again stealing from @omk3 in the Listen Every Day challenge Thank you for your hard work I swear I was not intentionally waiting for you to make the Listen Every Day Challenge thread so I could steal the calendars
excited to start this challenge from day one this time!
I tried the summer 2021 and the winter 2023 challenges but I wasn’t able to keep a streak so hopefully this time will be different!
Will this finally be the challenge where I don’t get slammed with work and I actually have time and energy to focus on stuff? Only time will tell But my main plan/goal is to finish Penguin Highway during this challenge! I think it’s definitely doable, based on my reading speed in the last challenge. I also, of course, will be reading Vol. 4 of 夜の名前を呼んで, so uh look forward to more gushing about Rei and his cute magical face
Hello again, friends! Good to be back for another challenge! As always, thank you to @windupbird for hosting the thread, and I hope to get a lot of good reading done with you all in the next few months
This start of this challenge perfectly lines up with my 2 year anniversary of starting to learn japanese, so it’s both a fresh start to the challenge and a fresh start to my personal 3rd year of study! Very excited to see what both this challenge and this year brings.
Reading Streak: 273 days
Currently Reading:
Manga: some bookwalker freebies, and BBC, IBC, and IBC Primer books
Book: コンビニ人間, 四月は君の噓 Light Novel
Textbook: 新完全マスター読解N3
Game: どうぶつの森e+
Goals:
I haven’t really settled on any personal goals for this challenge yet, but I might update more once the challenge actually starts. Right now, my only goal is to try to read all of 四月は君の嘘 in april. I’m going to put pretty much everything else on the back-burner until May and really just focus on that once the challenge starts.
Perhaps I should consider either amount or difficulty as well, but not a priority for now. Maybe joining some upcoming book club; though I don’t like my pace being strictly paced by others or long schedules. I would still need to read to support my listening.
Thinking about it, calendar might not need a , only just date + icons (like ), or replace the date with ・
Icons: = manga, = non-manga, = grammar / textbook, = video game
I might put only either manga / non-manga / game at once.
It’s been a while, but I’ve decided to join this challenge again! I’ve missed this thread
My goal for the whole year is to read 24 books, with 10 of those not being manga. So to keep on track with that, my goal for the next three months is to finish two non-manga books and six books total.
No calendar for me (I already track in 2 places), but thanks again @windupbird for hosting!
I’ll kick off by saying I finished the remainder of last week’s assignment for レベル7 this morning, read a bit more of 花束は毒 (and stopped on quite the twist but…feelings on that below*), and am a few pages into the final assignment of この本を盗む者は. I probably will finish both those last two books in the next day or two, so looking forward to crossing those off!
*About the twist in 花束は毒. Major spoilers. Kind of a rant. Only read if you don’t care / don’t plan to read the book. Also I read crime stuff so if you’re sensitive to those topics just skip it:
So the tl;dr plot of the book is 先輩ー男 is idolized a bit by MC. He finds out that 先輩ー男 is getting vaguely threatening letters in the mail telling him to call it off with his fiance. MC contacts a 名探偵 private detective who is his 先輩ー女 and there’s totally no feelings developing there. Like they assure us of this so much like wink wink nudge nudge but honestly the two seem to have basically zero chemistry or compatibility so…yeah?
Anyways. The reason 先輩ー男 is getting letters is cause 4 years ago he was arrested on rape charges and ‘settled’. Said attack was a random victim assault in a park. He never met the girl who accused him, the evidence we’ve been presented is fairly weak, he’s said to not know who the girl is, she never met him before either, etc etc. The settlement was handled by the girl’s parents and his lawyer.
So most of the book thus far has been trying to track down who the victim was but because her name was redacted after the case settled they can’t get that, but the figure out the letter sender is the father of the victim and they find out his name.
So, 名探偵 private detective meets with him to be like, “hey, what’s up with you sending this guy these letters?” and he drops the name of his daughter. Which is the name of the woman that 先輩ー男 is engaged to. So…wow big どんでん返し, right?!
Except no. So much no.
she picked this dude out of a line up, and presumably while her name was withheld from him, his wasn’t from her, right? Like a victim not being told the name of their attacker…?
Dude is suuuuuuper cautious about interacting with anyone from his old town. Like legit almost rebuffs MC cause he was from old town, his name is mud there, people hate him, his reputation has been dragged. So how is he able to date this woman to the point of being engaged without knowing she used to live in that town?
Ok I know this is maybe a Japanese cultural thing but it’s super weird to me that they’re engaged and all ready to have a 入籍パーティー but he hasn’t met her parents?
Anyways, I gotta read on to see if the plot can redeem itself after that.
I guess I’ll try to join this time as well:p I haven’t been able to keep up with the challenge properly since last spring and I doubt I’ll be able to this time either, but an attempt shall be made
Super excited to join this challenge for the first time! Reading is my main goal, so I can’t wait to get started.
resources
ルリドラゴン: reading along with the ABBC よつばと!: I have the first volume and there’s a book club for it, so might as well start it! ロジカとラッカセ: reading along with the BBC Stories from Satori Reader Graded news pieces from Easy Japanese Graded Reading Sets from Kanji Study
The Winter Challenge was my first challenge here and I’m really happy I took part as it built a passion that was long dorment. Reading!
So let’s keep with the Spring one, because I’ve got a ever growing backlog of 30 Titles (novel and light novel) that I want to read.
I’m always having a lot of fun with this challenge. I have so many things I want to read but don’t get around to because of other obligations, so having a challenge to motivate me to sit down and crack open a book is great!
This time around I will be doing a lot of reading through the Tobira workbook as I am working though the textbook with the others in this thread.
I have a yearly goal of completing 2 VNs, 2 novels, and 16 manga volumes. I’ve currently finished 4 manga volumes. I’m 50ish% into Loopers (I don’t care that 40% of that was read last year), and some % into BU$TAFELLOWS. Because these yearly goals are important to me, my “what I’ve finished” section includes everything I’ve finished this year, but clearly marks which challenge it belongs to.
I also have a goal to read 52 books in English, because I want to get back to regular reading in general. And to hit 52 books I need to read on average one book per week; meaning I probably need to be pretty consistent about reading, which is my ultimate goal!
I will be tracking my English reading too, although less detailed than my Japanese reading.
Lastly, I’ll also be reading through A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar together with the club I started. And I will be tracking that too. My goal is to read just a little grammar every day, at least when we get to the main entries mid-April.
This means a good reading day should have 3 emojis. One for Japanese reading, for grammar and for English reading.
