This is my second time participating in this and I hopefully plan to participate many more years down the line!

my plans

Last spring I somehow managed to finish 2 light novels which were adaptations of Chinozo vocaloid songs (Goodbye Sengen and Schema) and I plan to continue with them since there’s 2 more novels in the series.

First one is Elite which I read like 60 pages and gave up because I was very busy and lazy too. This time I also plan to take the JLPT test for N2 at the end of the year so I plan to start using Tae Kim book I bought and some Shin Kanzen books later too. But for now, I’ll just read some song-made-into-light-novels I bought (I also have いのちの食べ方) and kick back and relax. When it’s end of the July, I’ll start studying for JLPT seriously.

I’ll use my former format which I write a sentence or two in Japanese about the progress on the novel I read that day so that might help you get some reading even when you’re scrolling here lol. I also copied some things here from javerend and taiyousea so thank you.

Yay! Hello everyone~
I really enjoyed Spring challenge so of course I’m joining this one as well~

Since I haven’t finished playing Lost sphear I’ll be continuing playing it, reading in-game text and dialogues intensively :video_game: :open_book: :muscle:

Also will likely finish VN called Natsuno kanata which I read once a week with a friend (been doing it for ~9 months!)

And occasionally a bit of P5R game might happen as well as something totally random :upside_down_face:

I didn’t really plan it but I started playing FF16 in Japanese as well so also that !

This is my first time posting on this site, but I have lurked for quite awhile around the book clubs. My progress has been gradual, but I think I am finally ready to give the Absolute Beginner Book Club a try in August! As such, I am very excited to begin working toward that goal alongside all of you.

Books:
Crystal Hunter (Natural): Completed five volumes
The Wolf of the Small Forest: (10%)
When Will Ayumu Make His Move?: (10%)

I want to spend most of July reading through Crystal Hunters to hopefully build up both my confidence and my ability to read in Japanese. The books look interesting, and I believe they will be a good first step. Around the end of July, or perhaps the start of August, I want to take the plunge and begin reading native manga. I am extremely nervous jumping into native material, but it will be a good experience for Horimiya on the 26th.

So today I read chapter 3 of ふらいんぐうぃっち :cherry_blossom: I had this manga in my library since last year and didn’t continue in forever, so this challenge already had a benefit now! I also learned a lot of new words, some including:

なまり - accent
きつい - hard
じょうろ - watering can
つぐ (継ぐ) - to inherit
めぐまれる - to be blessed with
ボーボー - fiercely, wild
新米 - new rice, novice

Home Post

Read ~10 pages of さくらいろの季節 today! It’s from the same publisher as the last novel I read and similarly school-themed, so here’s hoping I see some overlap in the vocab.

Some new words for the day:

写生（しゃせい）- sketching, drawing from life
敷地（しきち）- grounds, site, lot
繊細（せんさい）- dainty, delicate
へっちゃら - cool, composed, calm

So far it’s a cute story! Definitely some similar themes to what I’ve previously read, but the protagonist seems to be a lot more likable than in the last book I read, so that’s something.

1st july

home post

did a light read today, just the one 20 minute section of kiwami 2 (which, admittedly, was a little light on text in places) and one fate episode, セン’s first one. was probably the easiest thing i’ve read in granblue, closest thing to textbook japanese i’ve seen in a while.

it’s the jlpt tomorrow, so i’ll probably not update again til monday (lots of travelling :sleeping:). good luck to anyone else taking it!!

Hey everyone! Once again I’ll just be here, trying to keep up with regular posts… I’ve admittedly kind of lost my initiative to learn but I enjoy reading and I enjoy making these posts so I’ll keep going for as long as I can!

  • 声優ラジオのウラオモテ - light novel series about a pair of mutually antagonistic high school students who live double lives as aspiring 声優(せいゆう).

  • Monkeys!¡ - visual novel about a delinquent boy who has chosen to masquerade as a girl in a female-only school for the posh and genteel in order to save his own.

My aim this time around is to just finish the latter at a decent pace… I’ve been stalling on it for too long…

I’ve never joined this challenge before and I’m very scared to do so…
Not because I’m scared of not completing it, but because I’m scared of reading about so many exciting books that my backlog will increase at a much faster pace than I can empty it :laughing:
Also let me tell you that since I’ve started WK one year ago, I’ve been thinking that you people are all Gods, for being able to reading in Japanese :saluting_face:
And here am I, joining you haha, somehow it got within my reach too! So happy!

  • ぶんぶん(.) = humming; buzzing :kissing: :honeybee:
  • すやすや(.) = sleeping peacefully :zzz:
  • さめざめ(.) = crying silently; sorrowfully :sweat_drops:
  • だらだら(.) = in drops / gently / at a snail’s pace
  • すっぽり(.) = entirely; completely (covered)
  • なだらか(.) = gently sloping
  • 嫋(たお)やか = graceful; pliant. In a way, like しなやか.
  • 毟(むし)る = to pluck off. A tuft of fur in context. Has Furigana.
  • でっち上(あ)げる = to fabricate; to hoax; to make up a false story
  • 大本(おおもと) = foundation; root
  • スコップ(.) = a shovel; a spade; a scoop
  • 数珠(じゅず) = string of beads; rosary
  • 羽虫(はむし) = biting louse (lice); small winged insect. Nothing related to 虫歯(むしば).
  • 諒解(りょうかい) = roger; understood. Has Furigana. Probably just similar to 了解(りょうかい).
  • 傍目(はため) = looking from the side; outsider’s perspective
  • 無精(ぶしょう) = sloth; laziness = 不精(ぶしょう)
  • 下賎(げせん) = low birth = 下賤(げせん)
  • 胡乱(うろん) = suspicious looking. Somewhat like 胡散臭(うさんくさ)い.
  • 連想(れんそう) = mental association; reminding of
  • 艇(てい) = small boat. Maybe thinking of 艦艇(かんてい) which aren’t so small.
  • 回廊(かいろう) = corridor
  • 番所(ばんしょ) = guardhouse. Perhaps like modern 交番(こうばん).
  • 参拝(さんぱい) = visiting and paying respect
  • 簾(すだれ) = a bamboo blind. Or just す in 御簾(みす). Kanji also used in 暖簾(のれん).
  • 一点張(いってんば)り = single-mindedness
  • 毒(どく)を食(く)らわば皿(さら)まで = if you’ve eaten poison, (lick) the plate. Will probably be poisoned to death anyway.
  • 壺(つぼ)に嵌(は)まる = to hit bull’s eye; to go as expected. But with ど～ (= very much), JMdict gives somewhat an opposite meaning. どつぼにはまる = to find oneself in deep trouble.

The thread is back c: happy anniversary! I’ll be trying to join this one, I ended up skipping last one altogether pretty much but I feel ready to commit to daily reading again for the most part. I still won’t use a calendar because it’s likely I’ll skip a day here and there when I need or want and I don’t want to feel guilty about it, but I will be tracking amount this time, not as a requirement but just as mere curiosity to see how much I end up reading by the end; I saw the graphs that some of you make and they’re pretty nice. This won’t be as fancy but I do have a time tracking app that sort of produces some cool statistics so I might post those when the thread is over. Also I will pretty much be reading VNs I think so all measurements will be in characters.
