Thank you so much @windupbird again for setting up the thread!

Looking forward to having fun with you all again. I’m not sure what I’ll be reading this time, I have a couple options:

  • 君の名は , bought it for the intermediate book club but ended up dropping it early. I feel like it could be a nice option right now and I’m sure the book club would be very useful.

  • 星の王子さま , I bought it many years ago from a local store because I thought it was cute and it was fairly priced, and The Little Prince is an awesome book (that I remember close to nothing about). I thought it would be nice to read it in Japanese.

  • Hukumusume web site, courtesy of @Zakarius , thanks for enlightening me! This one could actually be really interesting starting from Januray 1 since it’s divided in days and months of the year.

  • Final Fantasy XIV, both my love and nemesis of the previous challenge :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: . It’s a hard resource, but I just can’t help myself, I keep going back to setting it in Japanese. I think it’s fair to say that it’s my all-time favourite game, for way too many reasons. I’m not up to the level to play the story comfortably in Japanese, there are so many things I don’t understand (and oh boy is it text heavy and with so many registers), and while that’s a negative point, there is also so much I can learn from it. It takes a lot of work though, it’s probably best to reserve it for when I’m not mentally drained.

  • Other games. No one in particular but there are a few I can think of. I played Genshin Inpact when it released and I liked it, and now that it has a lot more updates might be a nice moment to play it again, this time in Japanese cause why not (I’m so glad I took the leap of starting to play games in Japanese, it doesn’t feel daunting anymore). I still have a bit of NieR:Automata to complete so there’s that. There’s also Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun that I want to play; I did for a while and it’s great because it’s also voiced, it’s a cool stealth game. Perhaps continue Stardew Valley, maybe even Animal Crossing, hmmm… Probably some other Final Fantasy, or perhaps Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Switch.

What are you all planning to read, have you thought about it or will you just go with the wind?

Yay. I’ve been on a manga break, but my pile keeps getting bigger with all the free kindle stuff.

For this challenge I think I’ll keep my same guideline of reading a chapter per day, but if I want to read more I’ll not hold back.

Priority will be the spy x family volumes I still have left to read.

I’ve been playing about two months, and I’m really enjoying it (in eng tho)! I can play for short increments due to the way quests are set up which is nice, and the music and world is gorgeous. Patch 2.4 is coming soon with another lantern rite event I think. Both Niers are fantastic as well and I’m considering a replay in Japanese after work let’s up a bit in march.

I want to get through my backlog of (mostly free…) manga so I’m thinking I’ll join the challenge to try to do that, although I might not make every day with how busy my job is atm.

Looking forward to reading with everyone again!

I think I’ll be sticking with reading a daily Hukumusume story for the time being as my reading is still slow and patchy. But I’ll be seeing where the wind takes me, no doubt I’ll fall down some rabbit-hole along the way.

I would love to read some Japanese history at some point, though I realise this will be scary-difficult - butttt I’ll see what this challenge has in store!

Thanks for hosting the thread again, @windupbird ! :raccoon:

Hi! My first time trying to participate in a challenge like this while also engaging with the community- nice to meet everyone!
I have a whole bunch of manga on my kindle I want to knock out, and a whole bunch of textbooks I’m trying to get through.
I also want to try Genshin, I’ve tried before but it was really difficult for me haha. Do you guys have any tips to make sure I remember and keep myself accountable that have worked for you? I tend to forget completely but I’m gonna try real hard! I’m going to set notifications on my phone as a beginning safety net but if anyone else has any tips I’d love to hear them!!

I will participate in this thread again. Thanks to the Read Everyday Challenge threads I read over 5000 pages this year which is pretty much nothing considering that I probably still have around 100000 pages to read in my backlog.

Yeah I will read much more in 2022.

I’m planning to do the extensive reading challenge /thread in the new year, but kind of want to join this to push myself into a habit of reading more articles online. Books are a set habit, but the writing style+vocab of casual (non news) web content is something I can see myself benefiting from reading more of.
Can I do both? Or better to stick everything into one place?

EDIT to add calendar so I don’t spam with a new post

What I'll be reading

I’ll probably be reading some blog posts, meaning book articles, random stuff on p-dress (or similar content sites), and maybe some technical articles from Qiita so I can get more comfy with terminology in my field. Anything long form is fair game.

Goals

Just get into the groove of reading more non-literary Japanese. I’m very comfortable with books now, but my interaction with articles is largely “find the info I need and exit”; rarely do I read anything in depth. I think closer reading of this type of Japanese might help improve my own writing and maybe even speaking as I’ll get more exposure to how to naturally convey thoughts and opinions.

Books

My plan is to read some books with the book clubs:

If I have time, I’d like to start reading 本好きの下剋上 vol. 8, which is the first book of the third arc in the series.

First of all, welcome! Glad to have you join us! In terms of remembering to read daily, I think making it a specific part of my daily routine has helped me. For past challenges, my routine has been, I get home from work/finish working, eat dinner, then read as much or as little as I’m feeling up to that day (usually shooting for at least half an hour of time). Then I post an update here before launching into my “I’m done with the day” activities (which usually means watching TV for hours on end because once I start, I find it very difficult to stop ). Not sure if that’s super helpful, but that’s what I do - I think posting in the thread daily can be really helpful in terms of accountability, and/or creating a calendar “main post” to check off boxes for each day that you read.

You can absolutely do both! The two definitely aren’t mutually exclusive (and can even be complementary to one another, since they have slightly different focuses/time frames/approaches to goal setting). If you’d like to set book reading goals in the tadoku thread and use this thread to work on reading other types of content, you’re more than welcome to do so ^^ I say use whatever thread or combination of threads you feel like will work best for you and what you’d like to do/accomplish.

Absolutely agree! It’s what hooked me the most, I thought both were amazing :slightly_smiling_face: .

It only takes one post from @windupbird to enslave the minds of half of the thread towards cute animals and dark ways. Prevail, everyone! :eyes: hisssss Just kidding, please do.

First of all, welcome! :tada: I hope you have a good time in the community.

As for your question, I would personally recommend to ditch anything you’re not really feeling. You don’t have to finish things just because you started them necessarily; if you don’t enjoy it anymore, I’d say throw it away and pick something new that you do. Unless you do enjoy it but are currently going through a dry moment, in which case I personally think it’s fine to push through, if you are nonetheless interested in what’s happening next or something like a dry resource, like textbooks and so on. Other than that, as @windupbird mentioned, I think posting updates frequently (many of us do it daily) and engaging with the thread’s discussion or simply posting what you did is a huge help that keeps you coming back every day to the dynamic of reading → posting, and so on. Ultimately I think it’s healthy to have a balance between the challenge being work that can push your ability further, and also something that you enjoy doing.

I finally have time to join one of these! :tada:

Read…
:yellow_square: … a little :orange_square: … a fair amount :red_square: … a lot

Days completed: 53/59

Goals
  • improve :running_woman:
  • finish/continue some of the many things I’ve started/bought already, or decide that I’m not interested anymore. Either way: sort through the mess that’s my currently reading/tbr pile and don’t start a million things at once :grimacing:
On tracking

I think I’d like to keep track of how much I’m reading to an extend, but without too much detail. Just out of curiosity because I seem to have no good sense of how regularily I’m actually reading. I’ve tried tracking time or pages before but that apparently just stresses me out and makes something feel like a chore that isn’t one at all, so I’d rather not do that again (even though I sort of envy people who do that and then have cool stats at the end!)
During the first or second challenge someone here used a system where they just tracked if they read “a little” or “a lot” or something like that, roughly estimated without a timer - I really like that concept! I can’t for the life of me remember who that was, whoever you are, I hope it’s ok that I’m stealing your idea

Reading list (for now)

novels / light novels

  • 地球星人 (book club! :books:)
  • NO. 6 volume 2 (I have maybe 20 pages left of vol. 1, I’m gonna be optimistic and assume I can still finish it this year)

manga

  • Death Note Vol. 1 (book club! :notebook:)

games

  • Doreamon Story of Seasons :woman_farmer: :carrot:

+ maybe other stuff from my tbr/currently reading pile.

Things I actually read during the challenge

novels / light novels

  • 地球星人 (20% - 51%) :alien:
  • orange (0% - 100%) :love_letter:
  • NO. 6 book #2 (0%-100%) :rat:
  • NO. 6 book #3 (0%- 28%) :mouse2:

manga

  • Death Note volume #1 (some) :notebook:

I’ve followed the other two threads to an extend but this is the first time I’m joining in - looking forward to seeing what you’re all reading! :slightly_smiling_face:

What I'll be reading

In short, I’d like to read one page a day of anything. If I don’t have to look up a word or anything because I can’t figure out context then I’ll read another page (and another, and another, until I have to look something up, but maybe I’ll stop at 50 pages haha).

レンタルおにいちゃん - My first focus will be continuing with this as I think I dropped off somewhere in vol.2, so I’ll start that again from the beginning. If I manage to get through vol.2, I’ll either start vol.3 or switch back to よつばと!. These should be easy enough that I’ll either start wanting to move on to something more difficult again, or manage to make significant progress through each series in 2022.

Animal Crossing - I stopped playing this in Japanese for a while, so I’m going to switch back. I’ll be logging in to check turnip prices twice a day so if I don’t plan on playing any more than that on a specific day, making sure I fit in one conversation with an islander per day along with a turnip price check is a good start to building confidence back there.

Pokemon Cafe ReMix - Already playing this in Japanese, maybe I should actually log in every day to play a level rather than once a week for an easy bit of immersion?

I’ve started reading Barks articles just on the side because I’m enjoying learning new ways to talk about music, but I don’t really want to set any targets here.

Progress updates

28/12/21: Joined the challenge! :raised_hands:t2:
1/1/22: Completed my NYE countdown on Animal Crossing in Japanese, spent half an hour talking to my islanders and read a whole chapter of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2.
2/1/22: About 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, making sense of the Tetris 99 daily challenges, and 37 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2.
3/1/22: About 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, and finished chapters 2 and 3 of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2.
4/1/22: About 15 minutes of Animal Crossing, and all of chapter 4 of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2. (And it got sad )
5/1/22: About 15 minutes of Animal Crossing, couple of levels of Pokemon Cafe ReMix and chapter 5 of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2. This rounds out Vol.2 entirely for me and wow was this volume an emotional rollercoaster.
6/1/22: Not too much reading done today as it was my birthday and I had a busy day, but I did start レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.3 and get 27 pages in!
7/1/22: Finished off chapters 11 and 12 of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3) today, for a total of 48 pages reading.
8/1/22: Read 10 pages of chapter 13 of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3).
9/1/22: Read a very short BARKS article about Daichi Miura’s rescheduled 2019 tour just so I’ve read something today.
10/1/22: Read 20 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3) to finish up chapter 13.
11/1/22: Read 11 pages of chapter 14 of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3).
12/1/22: Read 4 pages of chapter 14 of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3).
13/1/22: Played Animal Crossing for about 20 mins, and read another 20 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3) to finish off Chapter 14!
14/1/22: Read 49 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん to finish off chapter 15, and close off vol.3!
15/1/22: 30 mins of Animal Crossing, and read 38 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん vol.4, finishing off chapter 16.
16/1/22: 30 mins of Animal Crossing, and 39 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん vol.4, finishing off chapter 17.
17/1/22: A little bit of Animal Crossing, and 48 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん vol.4, finishing off chapter 18.
18/1/22: 10 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん vol.4, starting chapter 19. Making sense of my Garmin stress and body battery alerts after my tattoo appointment.
19/1/22: Half hour of Animal Crossing, making more sense of my Garmin stress and body battery alerts post-tattoo appointment, and watching Book of Boba Fett with Japanese subtitles.
20/1/22: Half hour of Animal Crossing, some Mario Kart, and reading 100~ pages of レンタルおにいちゃん vol.4 to finish off the series. :sob:
21/1/22: Half hour of Animal Crossing, 19 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1, and page 6 of れつ!ハイキュー?! vol.1
22/1/22: 11 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1, and page 7 of れつ!ハイキュー?! vol.1.
23/1/22: 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, and page 8 of れつ!ハイキュー?! vol.1.
24/1/22: 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, and page 9 of れつ!ハイキュー?! vol.1.
25/1/22: 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, 7 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1, and page 10 of れつ!ハイキュー?! vol.1.
26/1/22: 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, 9 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1 to finish off chapter 1, and page 10 of れつ!ハイキュー?! vol.1.
27/1/22: 7 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1, and an NHK Easy News article about Coronavirus booster jabs in Tokyo and Osaka.
28/1/22: 6 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1.
29/1/22: 5 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1.
30/1/22: NHK Easy News article about a 19 year old getting questioned by police over taking photos of a university entrance exam with her smartphone, and posting the photos on a tutoring website.
31/1/22: An article on BARKS about this years NME Award nomination shortlists. TIL that NME awards now covers gaming and film. Mostly this was an exercise in parsing large amounts of katakana.

1/2/22: 30 minutes of Animal Crossing and an article on BARKS about the new Age Factory song being used as the theme song for the film 「 今はちょっと、ついてないだけ」.
2/2/22: 30 minutes of Animal Crossing and following the Japanese subtitles on this week’s episode of Book of Boba Fett.
3/2/22: 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, and 3 pages of カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 vol.1 which was mostly me trying to parse Yamazaki’s first tall tale of the volume.

I’m going to post what I’m reading in Japanese, but also what I’m reading in Mandarin (underneath a cut). Putting them together ups my motivation for both, so I hope it’s all right to include my Mandarin reading in my updates. I have big goals for reading in both languages in 2022, so よろしくお願いします!

Things I'm planning to read

若草物語 (Little Women book 2)
My textbook :skull:
Undertale/Deltarune (but in japanese) lol
I’ll see if i can get my hands on some japanese books/manga/whatever :]

My goals for this

I want to be able to read faster and obv comprehend stuff, but tbh I’m not at a very high level of comprehension so I’m focusing more on being able to read and recognize the characters/kanji (so then it’ll be easier for me to comprehend things xD)

Key

:x: = didn’t read
:white_check_mark: = read for 30 minutes or more
:star: = read for an hour or more
