Letβs get that cake or burn those turtles in time for the next total lunar eclipse!
Inspired by the Race to the thread.
This thread is to motivate each other, find study-buddies, or just rant!
If youβre interested: introduce yourself in a post below, and add yourself to the leaderboard!
Goal: May 26, 2021
The next total lunar eclipse will be on May 26th 2021 (days left ). Letβs set level or burn goals to reach by then!
Info about the total lunar eclipse
stardustashes:
What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earthβs shadow, which blocks most of the Sunβs light from hitting it for a brief period of time. During an eclipse, the Sunβs light has to pass through the Earthβs atmosphere to get to the Moon, and only the longest (red) wavelengths of visible light are able to make it there and reflect off of it due to a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering . This is why the Moon takes on a reddish color (hence why lunar eclipses are sometimes called βblood moonsβ).
When do lunar eclipses occur?
Lunar eclipses can occur when the Moon is βfull,β or completely illuminated (i.e. opposite the Sun from our perspective). βBut wait, StardustAshes!β you might be saying. βDoesnβt that mean we should see an eclipse every month?β Not quite! The Moonβs orbit around the Earth is tilted slightly, meaning that it doesnβt pass through the Earthβs shadow every month. This is why we sometimes see partial eclipses rather than full ones. Total lunar eclipses, where the Moon is completely red, occur when the Moon passes through the umbra, which is the darkest part of the Earthβs shadow.
Lunar eclipses vs. Solar eclipses
Lunar eclipses are visible to everyone on the βnighttimeβ side of the Earth (the side not facing the Sun) at the same time, provided the weather cooperates. This is because the Earthβs shadow is cone-shaped, and big enough to cover the Moon when theyβre in alignment. Solar eclipses are a different phenomenon entirely. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon blocks the Sunβs light from reaching Earth (when the Moon is a βnew moonβ). However, the Moon is a much, much, much smaller object than the Sun and even the Earth, so the shadow it casts is also smaller than the Earth. This is why solar eclipses are only visible to people who fall in the path of the Moonβs shadow during the eclipse. Everyone else will see a partial eclipse, or none.
Fun facts!
One of the ways Aristotle was able to determine that the Earth was spherical was by observing the shadow cast by the Earth during a lunar eclipse. It was, unsurprisingly, round.
The Moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of approximately 3.8 cm/year , so in a few billion years, anyone whoβs still around wonβt be able to see lunar eclipses!
Eclipses have been very well documented throughout history, so you may have read about one in a history book and not even known it due to the lack of information that existed at that time!
There are usually more solar than lunar eclipses per year, but many of them fall over the oceans or in less populated areas, so itβs not always apparent.
A complete calendar of upcoming solar and lunar eclipses can be found here !
Leaderboards
Editing the leaderboards: click the orange edit button ( ), hit βEdit Wiki,β and add yourself based on your current level
Team: see the Teams section below
Speed: you can check your speed on wkstats or use the time it took to clear your last level. If your speed is inconsistent or you donβt want to fill it, you can leave it as βx daysβ
Goal: we have two leaderboards - one for levels (eg: level 60), and another for % burned (eg: 100% - all burned!)
Levels: Joined is the level you were at when you joined this group, and current is your current level. When you level up, donβt forget to move yourself up in the leaderboard according to your new level
% Burned: you can find it here
you no longer need to have member status on the forums to edit wiki posts!

Oh, I know. Just making a joke on the fact that (a) Iβm already level 60, and (b) I could probably reset to the start and reach level 60 again about eight times in that period. If I felt like it.
