I’m very excited to be doing this again! I did the summer challenge, so my last sign of life on this forum was on August 31st. Many things happened in my life over the past few months. Wanikani maintenance was the only thing I had time and energy to do. I kept telling myself to read and study more, but those reviews were always looming over my head…
So I’m on a Wanikani break. My subscription runs out before New Years, and I don’t know if/when I’ll get back to it. I have a solid kanji foundation, so now I want to immerse and mine vocabulary from books and games. I’m tracking my study time to make sure I don’t fall off the wagon. This challenge is a great way to stay accountable as well.
Anyway, enough background info. Calendar and reading material time!

Good luck to everyone tackling the challenge, either for the first time or again. I’m looking forward to keeping up with updates from all of you once more. Thank you in advance for bearing with my life rants and updates
after the japanese advent calendar 2022 and reading a sample there every day i’ve become really motivated to read every day! i’m gonna try and do a chapter of manga a day (or less for more difficult stuff which is above my level), mixing between sentence/vocab mining and just reading without pulling vocab out. looking forward to this! gotta make a dent in that bookwalker backlog somehow amirite
home post!
currently reading:
蟲師 (curr. vol 6) - reading in detail
聖☆おにいさん - smooth reading
idk if granblue fantasy counts but i’m doing that here and there too
I plan on reading the couple of absolute beginner manga I have first and if Iv enjoy vol. 1 I’ll finish the series. Otherwise I’ll keep writing manga either currently being read by the book clubs on here or ones that have already finished to work up to reading LN. I’m not going to use a calendar because I’m terrible about updating it lol
Count me in!
I’ve managed to read every day so far in 2022, so I’m hoping to keep that streak going through 2023 too!
Thanks for hosting again @windupbird - I credit a lot of my improvement throughout 2022 to the motivation from these threads.

Will likely stick to SatoriReader because I’m not that confident about my grammar just yet. Maybe some NHK Easy News as well. But I’ve also committed to joining the next book/manga chosen for the ABBC.
Excited to join to hold myself accountable although I have to say I’m pretty intimidated about everyone’s reading capacity and level here!
Putting some cute emojis on my calendar to show what I read for each day and also linking each post, if any, to the emoji so I can look back on it later on. Legend of things I will or hope to read during this challenge:
We all start somewhere. I know my early attempts are displayed at different parts of the forum. If you choose to use the book clubs threads for Chi’s Sweet Home (volume 1) or 結婚しても愛してる, and many more places.
Heck, I was still reading graded readers last year in April/May, even if the higher levels ones.
We all grow, and if you stick with us I’m sure you’ll be reading ever more advanced stuff. ^^
We’ve had several people finishing their first manga/light novel/novel, and have in the past (and I’m sure currently have) people reading graded readers, satori reader, and so on.
What I love about these challenges so much is that we can all come together to read, and our different levels of ability means nothing.
So please feel welcome! And if you have trouble understanding something, feel free to ask right here. That is a benefit of having people of all levels hanging out together, someone further ahead can give you a lending hand.
Thanks for hosting another challenge @windupbird! I can’t believe we’re still going after 1.5 years! And it’s delightful to see both new and familiar usernames in the thread Wishing everyone a happy new year~
I can’t believe it’s time for another reading challenge! I was looking forward to this so much :333 I didn’t manage to follow through in the Spring and Summer, and was too burnt out to consider doing the challenge in Autumn, but I think I am ready to give this another go. Third time’s the charm right?
Planning to pick up where I left off last time, before I got completely consumed by uni, and finish ‘Kafka on the Shore’ - at least the first part for the time being. I’ve also got my eyes on ‘Before the Coffee Gets Cold’, though I have absolutely no idea what to expect from it. I’ll most likely end up perusing through some other reading materials too, but I suppose the main focus will be finishing Kafka on the Shore.
I’m also expecting to have a surplus of free time in the coming months - so I’m hoping I’ll be able to immerse myself more in reading :3
Edit: I just remembered that I’ve seen some people also tracking their other language reading goals in previous threads - and I’ve just recently started with Russian, and got a whole list of books I’m dying to read. So this will be my little side quest!
I must admit I’m pretty intimidated by this, but hey, nothing great ever came from staying in your comfort zone
Resources: Orange, コンビニ人間, Japanese Stories for Language Learners, Shin Kanzen Master N2 Reading, and news articles for lazy/busy days
Not sure yet if I will rotate between different things, or stick to one/two, but it’s good to know I have a variety of resources to choose from in case fatigue kicks in.
My goals: stick to it for as long as I can and, most importantly, have fun

Update 22nd Jan:
This challenge didn’t exactly start the way I wanted it to Spending time at in law’s in the first weeks was more overwhelming than I thought so I decided to postpone my start. Then I got sick when I came back home which delayed it even further. But I’m back now and that’s what counts
Practiced reading with SKM N2 these past two days. It is a jump from N3 for sure, but it being more challenging than the usual manga/articles I read it’s also motivating me to do WK lessons and reviews. Can’t wait to look back at these first pages and see how far I’ve come
My new year resolution is, as many here, keep a solid learning habit. This year will be my first time joining a post and trying to commit to it. I’ll be updating here as much as I can.
よろしくね!
Finally populated my home post for anyone interested.
@Nanashi96 There is currently an active book club reading Orange. We’re just about to finish volume 5. And even if you’re not that far along the series yet. Feel free to hang out in the threads. We’ll be happy to answer any questions if you have them. And we have done quite a bit of speculating and such, if you find that stuff fun.
Wow everybody seems so organized with this. I guess I’ll dip my toe for this challenge and keep myself accountable as well. I made a splurge buy on the first 8 volumes of 宇崎ちゃんは遊びたい! after the final episode of the second season but now I have to read them eventually. I’ve also bought the first volume of チェンソーマン but read that it’s a step up in reading level to go through it. I’ll be keeping it on the side and see how it goes.
