I finished 半落ち Loved it. A great read and a rollercoaster of emotions. Also the final twist was executed so well Definitely a harder read between the vocab and the grammar, easily one of the hardest books I’ve read this year, although 正欲 definitely edged in out in the portion I managed to read before I enswamped* myself in book clubs.

This is not a word, but I think it should be.

I somehow managed to finish 本好き 第一部 manga version on schedule!..mostly because I binged four volumes in a week and a half. That last one was a whopping 223 pages.

But I didn’t even start コンビニ人間 so I guess I’m moving it to March. Hopefully by EOM they’ll have finally hired us a new manager and I can stop working all this unpaid overtime. Either way I’m taking vacation this Friday and everyone can deal haha. I’ll catch up on this reading on the plane. I haven’t even had a chance to play more of P3P which I’m super bummed about.

Before I start 第二部 I’m going to work thru some of the free volume 1 manga I’ve picked up over the years. I need a bit of a break.

Played some more Steins;Gate! Today I got to fight through reading a 2000s message board complete with all the slang and typos definitely on the harder side but very interesting, I’m sure knowledge of hyper-specific dated internet slang will be eternally useful lmao. Always an adventure!

Ahhhhhh Yashiro admitting that all the other times he has sex are to try to rewrite what happened to him on his own terms but then Domeki showed him what sex could be! Is this progress?!?

Also, I liked the first arc of Saezuru but I haven’t enjoyed the plot of this arc so much when I was reading in English, but now that I’m reading in japanese, I barely understand the underlying plot. Rip

WOAH FIRST PAGE NUMBER IN THE WHOLE DAMN VOLUME! 136 (I read through 135). That’s chapter 48. This volume seems to be chapters 44-50. I’ll double check the page count on amazon to get an estimate of chapter length and guestimate for previous days based on that.

• スコーン = scone, a baked snack
• ぐうたら(.) = lazybones; idler
• もたらす = to bring about = 齎(もたら)す
• なすがまま(.) = at someone’s mercy
• ほくそ笑(え)む = to gloat over one’s thought
• せめぎ合(あ)い = fighting each other = 鬩(せめ)ぎ合(あ)い. The base verb is せめぐ. (And the Kanji is barely used elsewhere, just put in for the sake of monolingual Yomichan.)
• 悴(かじか)む = to grow numb with cold (e.g. in winter). Has Furigana.
• 乏(とぼ)しい = scarce. Has Furigana.
• 巨万(きょまん) = millions (of fortune); a lot of money. Japanese people say “ten thousands of fortune”. It’s actually 巨万(きょまん)の富(とみ) in context (also in IME).
• 無上(むじょう) = extreme; greatest (e.g. joy). Although the same sound, it is very different from 無情(むじょう) and 無常(むじょう).
• 無下(むげ)に = completely (refusing)
• 真摯(しんし) = serious; sincere. Something that 紳士(しんし) (= gentleman) would do?
• 改良(かいりょう) = improvement; betterment
• 諍(いさか)い = verbal quarrel. Has Furigana.
• 痣(あざ) = bruise. Has Furigana. Looks like, holding on to 志(こころざし), so bearing a few bruises. Then, something to be laughed at (嘲笑(あざわら)う).
• 外気(がいき) = outside air
• 端金(はしたがね) = a small sum of money. Has Furigana. はした appears to be yet another reading of the Kanji (端(はした)～). Also, 端(はし)た
• 種苗(しゅびょう) = seeds and seedlings = 種(たね)と苗(なえ)
• 唐松(からまつ) = (Japanese) larch, a kind of tree. Furigana here says ラーチ, but I didn’t know of the tree.
• 樅(もみ) = (Japanese) fir, a kind of tree. Furigana says ファール (fir) the first time, and もみ the second time.
• 常磐木(ときわぎ) = evergreen tree (no leaf changing color). No Furigana. I think of トキワシティー.
• 腕力(わんりょく) = brute strength. ワンリキー is something different.
• 万力(まんりき) = a vice
• 適任(てきにん) = qualified (for the job)
• 叡智(えいち) = wisdom. Has Furigana. Can also be written 英知(えいち). The first Kanji can be replaced by 英 in “wisdom” meaning (and the other meaning is “concerning emperor”). For the second Kanji (replaceable by 知), perhaps I think of 智慧(ちえ) first.
• 知見(ちけん) = knowledge = 知識(ちしき)
• 顛末(てんまつ) = the whole story = 顚末(てんまつ)
• 権謀術数(けんぼうじゅっすう) = trickery
• 垣間見(かいまみ)る = to catch a glimpse of. Has Furigana, except for the last Kanji. The first Kanji is 垣(かき) (= fence).
• 知(し)る由(よし)もない = no way of knowing. 由(よし) has Furigana. I have seen this one before…
• 出(だ)しにする = to use as an excuse
• 帰国(きこく)の途(と)に就(つ)く = to leave for home

• シーボルト = Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold was a German physician, botanist and traveler. He achieved prominence by his studies of Japanese flora and fauna and the introduction of Western medicine in Japan. He was the father of the first female Japanese doctor educated in Western medicine, 楠本 イネ.
• リチャード・ユースデン = Richard Eusden was a consul by proxy in Hakodate and very small person. People called him 豆コンシロ, which means “pea consul”. He named his house in the UK “Hokkaido House” after going back home finishing his term.

Yesterday I started 水たまりで息をする (why is there no muddy puddle emoji?). Like おいしいごはん, it looks like it will be a fast and relatively easy read.

Then I also made some progress in ユートロニカのこちら側. Each new chapter introduces a new character, and reading always feels harder at the start, before you get to know them. This time there were mentions of politics and war too, never my favourite. But soon the connection to the overall story became evident, and I only reluctantly put it down.

Orange

Read nothing yesterday. It is nice to sometimes take a day off and not worry about it.

Today I finished the last chapter of volume 7 of Orange, a crossover chapter with Dreaming Sun which was a fun goof. And that is about all there is to say about it.

Tomorrow I’ll either pick up Loopers, or start reading ahead on B$. Will have to decide which I prefer.
