あなたも殺人犯になれる! ❗ (Intermediate Book Club) [completed]

(Unrelated but I love your profile picture!!)

Thank you so much everyone!! I don’t have a computer that I can use yomichan/etc on, so it would probably have to be a physical copy which would mean look ups would be slooooow! I’m thinking about giving it a try anyway, even if all I can do is just roughly get the gist of things, that’s a lot better than nothing at all!

Afterall, if it’s too hard, I can just stop for a while, right?

You could read on a tablet or phone though? I read on my tablet, and lookups are easy. The Bookwalker app uses either the device’s inbuilt dictionary or Google Translate, which is better than nothing. And the Kindle app has an inbuilt dictionary, plus uses Bing Translate.
Some people prefer physical books and that’s totally fine, it’s just that, as you say, lookups take way more time than when you’re reading digitally.

It’s a bit embarrasing, but I didn’t know I could use my phone and still be able to look up words  When I’ve read things on my phone before on bookwalker it seemed like a flat image, so I probably just made a mistake! I will definitely try that again!!

I don’t have a kindle, but maybe it’s a worthy investment

You don’t need to buy a kindle, you can just install the kindle app on your phone if you like.
And if you read a manga on the Bookwalker app before, it would certainly have been an image. Novels are text though, and allow lookups.

It was manga, that explains it!! I also didn’t know I could download a kindle app, I feel really dumb rn  Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me!!

Glad I could help! And don’t worry about it, why would you know about stuff you have never used before?

I’m also going to try the Bookwalker route, haven’t done it before so might have some questions about the setup too.
But as far as I can see, from a phone it is quite easy, you can select a lot of text and when you hit Translate it puts it to Google translate

If Google Translate proves unsatisfactory (it often does), you can click the copy icon in the translation window to copy the word, then paste it in the dictionary of your choice. And selecting phrases rather than single words often gives better results.
If you have an iPhone or iPad, you get a proper dictionary instead of Google Translate. It’s really too bad that there’s no proper dictionary on the Android version of Bookwalker. Translating and looking up a word is not the same thing at all.

A bit tedious, but with the Search button you can “search” the selected text (whole sentences for example) on Google, and from there you can finally put it in the clipboard and just paste it wherever else is better than Google translate

You can also go the Google Translate route with a physical book, I attached some screenshots on how you can look up words then! (Because I found it to be a bit confusing) Although I would rather recommend going with the kindle or bookwalker app as the others mentioned

By the way, if others are also planning to read the digital version and buying from Amazon JP (Kindle), not sure if it’s in a sale or something, but I just purchased it for ¥253 - quite a good deal I’d say!

It’s also got the same price on Bookwalker and Kobo. I think it’s still way to hard for me, but at that price I just couldn’t resist.

So we have a schedule  Schedule 3 takes the win. The club will run for 16 weeks, the first week starts with only Chapter 1.
Updated in the main post.

Hey all!! I had seen this book in my scroll through of all the books clubs, and at first wasn’t super interested. But the other day I realized the author was 赤川次郎, and had just a few days prior written him down an author to look into! Then on bookwalker it was only some 200円, AND I had coins to use. So in my mind, it was free :relieved:

Looking forward to starting this book, thank you for setting up the club!

I’m torn whether I should get the kindle copy or the physical copy! Both would be the sameish price for me, and the kindle copy makes lookups 1000000000% easier, but the physical copy would force me to look up less and let me carry it easier in my pocket. What do y’all think??

If anyone is interested, I made a JPDB deck for the book

How I did it
  1. Got the text of the book from the epub I bought, cleaned up the html and the furigana
  2. Went to Log in or Sign up – jpdb
  3. New deck from text
  4. Paste and finish deck creation
  5. Installed JPDB-Export
  6. Export my deck as CSV

The result: _あなたも殺人犯になれる!_ deck export at 16.14.16 on 17_10_2023.csv - Google Drive
(disclaimer: I didn’t check JPDB’s parsing, there are probably mistakes and names of people for example)

How to get it in your JPDB
  1. Download the file _あなたも殺人犯になれる!_ deck export at 16.14.16 on 17_10_2023.csv - Google Drive
  2. Go to Log in or Sign up – jpdb
  3. New deck from text
  4. Paste and finish deck creation
  5. Enjoy!
