Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Chapter 25

かなりいい加減な説である。

I couldn’t quite work out what the implication was here. This theory (that you can’t sleep when a typhoon arrives and the air pressure drops) is a bit dodgy/half-baked/unreliable?

Chapter 26

あ…。人工呼吸のことですか」「いやついてれてね。怒らないでくれよ」
I got confused here by who was talking - ’刑事’さん or 聡美
can anyone clarify?

「睡眠薬なんか持っているはずがないよ」

The meaning that I guessed was that 河本さつきさん wouldn’t have needed to drug everyone else if she just wanted to be killed by 山名. But my reading of the sentence is that Satsuki mustn’t/shouldn’t have had a sleeping draught? Is that right? How does he know that?

「しかしね、あの子は殺人捜しに自らすすんで加わる」
can anyone help parse/unravel this? (I’ve seen a machine translation of it, but I can’t work out how to get from the original to that!)

Chapter 25

Oh. I thought the theory was the opposite, i.e. that low air pressure makes you sleepy (眠くなる). As for this sentence, I’m also pretty unsure about it. The use of しかし in the next sentence made me think that maybe she used to think that the theory that taifuns cause low air pressure that makes you sleepy is an old wife’s tale, but then she awakes after suddenly falling asleep during a taifun and that makes her reconsider?

Chapter 26

Can’t really help with the conversation between 聡美 and 山名. I also lost track of who’s saying what and will probably have to reread it with machine translation help.

But I’ll give this a try:
しかしね、however,
あの子は this kid
殺人捜し に manhunt for the murderer
自らすすんで of one’s own free will
加わる be added / join
= However, this kid joined the hunt for the murderer of her own free will.

Chapter 25 & 26

’刑事’さん: 「さっきは嬉しかったよ」 (continuing to speak after inviting 聡美 outside)
聡美: 「あ…。人工呼吸のことですか」 (confirming that ’刑事’さん is talking to her about the “CPR/artificial respiration” from before)
’刑事’さん: 「いやついてれてね。怒らないでくれよ」 (explaining himself for calling it that)

I think he says that because if she’s only a kid who wants to die and who came to the lodge to learn manga, it’s unlikely that she’d conveniently have enough sleeping medicine on hand to drug everybody. It would have to be someone who knew 山名 beforehand who brought the drugs on purpose. It’s a weak explanation but in all fairness, he’s not a real cop and he’s not really trying to solve a mystery ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 聡美 is such a sucker fr. I’m hoping that 尚子 doesn’t fully buy into it though!

Follow-up question

Did anyone understand what the actual explanation is? It seemed pretty vague, so I was wondering where 聡美 stands with him now. Did he make it clear that he didn’t want to kiss her and was just using an excuse or is she still holding out hope?

Both chapters

Another thing I didn’t get was why neither 聡美 nor 尚子 mention that さつき already tried to free the “murderer” when they’re talking about the accomplice. Then, when 聡美 talked about it to 山名, I figured maybe it’s because she wants to solve the mystery alone with her crush(?). But then I still don’t understand why 尚子 kept silent about it. Or did I misunderstand something in Chapter 24, and 尚子 doesn’t even know?

Follow-up question

It’s vague and probably meant to be so. 山名 wants to keep 聡美 on the hook and thinking he might be into her without fully committing. I’m not 100% on it but I think with「つい照れて」 he’s saying he ‘is/was just embarrassed’, and implies that’s why he didn’t acknowledge the kiss, even though「嬉しかったよ」. He needs her to think there might be connection between them because without it, she wouldn’t buy his terrible fake theories :upside_down_face:

Both chapters

There seems to be some plot weirdness going on. Apparently they did tell everybody about the situation with さつき, and it was laughed off? It was also really easy for 山名 to convince 聡美 that she had nothing to do with freeing him. I feel like you can see the author’s hand in keeping さつき out of focus, despite how suspicious she is!

Chapter 25

Haha that chapter was hilarious.
The fall in the stairs.
The 人工呼吸してくれて、ありがとう.
First saying「死なないで!」 , five minutes later 「死んじまえ」
(I actually got scared that he would just accidentally shoot her or himself while tumbling down so this outcome was both funny and a relief)

Chapter 26

Interesting with turning 聡美 and 尚子 against each other.
And really wondering where did 戸所 and むらさき are?!

Also wow only 2 weeks left, hope we will get many answers!!

I just finished the chapters… and wow

ch 25

Have there been hints about 聡美 having a crush on 山名, and I’ve just willfully ignored all of them?? I read this on a train and visibly cringed at the part with the kiss. The people around me started to stare

ch 26

Alright, I was thinking this at several points in the story but… Is it that weird for a girl to not be scared? I really don’t see anything that 聡美 did as particularly surprising or strange for a young woman to do.
Like even when they were discussing going the the shed to check if 山名 was there… The only danger was the possibility of him having a gun, right? How would your gender make a difference then?

Oh, and on that note…
They all believe the criminal is on the loose. Okay… but you have two guns now (the one 尚子 used and the one from the detective). So… No one is gonna check if the guns are still with you? Or demand that you want one to protect yourself against this scary unarmed, probably tired and hungry man? I don’t know, the story is starting to lose me. Comedy has never really been my favorite genre, so maybe its because of the comedic bits becoming more prominent (?)
I also don’t see how 山名 is going to get away with any of this. Now that the storm is gone, surely the police is going to look for him in helicopters and whatnot. Whats his plan exactly?

I first thought the 「死んじまえ」was said by 山名 and had a little heartattack

on chapter 26

The author was about 65 when he wrote this book; sometimes the worldview of a dude who was born in Japan in 1948 shows through…

Well, it was pretty subtle. If I remember correctly, back in Week 10, 聡美 once accidentially called him 恋人 instead of 刑事さん, and 尚子 apparently caught her Freudian slip and started talking about how it would be natural for them to get attracted to each other since they went through a life-threatening situation together when they went to look at the shack. After that, I can’t really remember any strong hints, but she did seem to seek out his company a lot.

Thanks!
I hadn’t encountered 自らすすんで before and thought it was something about advancing yourself (which I guess it sort of is)

Ooh, you are right! I remember that now. Pretty sure I disliked that and just hoped nothing would come of it… welp
I am really curious how it will end though. 聡美 already threw a vase at someone, what will she do to 山名 once the truth is out? Maybe she will copy the approach 尚子 used
