First name of a character Chapter 1 spoiler

Aah I thought that むらさき was a bit of a weird name, but now I know, she’s basically just called Violet :joy:
(also I think it’s pretty funny that I can understand N3/N2 sentences but don’t know basic things such as the names of all colors or animals or household objects in Japanese :see_no_evil: )

Huh? I thought むらさき was a man, have I had it wrong this whole time?!?

Spoilers for Chapter 7

Yes? I mean I’m not 100% sure, but at least like 99% sure. Especially since in Chapter 7

she is described as making her entrance in front of the candidates wearing a long dress, and is eyeing the male fiance of one of the female course participants

Bruh, I am so dumb :person_facepalming:
I’m sorry my exclamation wasn’t aimed at you, just myself haha.

I totally thought the lady coming down the stairs was a different character, now I feel like I need to reread all the parts with her in it!!

Thank you for clearing that up haha

Haha I’ve been there too and will again, no worries. Sometimes I do an image search on a search engine when it’s a new first name and I don’t know the gender, gives me an idea of the probable gender of a person. (then again sometimes you don’t know that you don’t know the gender)

At least I am not alone - I thought she was a man too  No wonder the part with the male fiance was so confusing for me. I never knew which part was said by which character

Oops, then I’m glad this discussion cleared that up! (now I’m still waiting anxiously that someone comes along and says that nope I’m the one who got it wrong )

Character from Chapter 1

Updated the table of proper names from “the manga teacher” to “the female manga teacher” in every thread and in the vocab sheet  we should almost have a gender column :joy:

I started the book 4 weeks late because of a trip and my success at catching up has been very meh so far (currently I’m halfways through chapter 3), but I have a question I hope someone can help me with:

I’ve heard people say that the dictionary is better on iOS but the one Bookwalker uses on my iPad is horrible. There’s a lot of words it doesn’t recognize at all, and if it does have something to say, it often links to a short description in Japanese that isn’t any more easy to understand than the word itself. Does anybody know if/how I can switch this to a good dictionary?

I am not an IOS user so I can’t answer your question directly. What I saw on Android and the physical kindle: the dictionary often doesn’t recognize the word standing alone (e.g. verbs not in dictionary form), but when I mark a whole sentence for translation it works rather well.

Unfortunately, the iPad dictionary doesn’t work at all for whole sentences. I actually has the highest success rate when I just select a word stem, and the longer the selected text gets, the higher the chance that it draws a blank. It doesn’t know short phrases and idioms, either.
