I have this goal for myself already, but having the accountability will probably help me actually achieve it! I have a lot of free time at work, so I try to use that time to get through all the NHKEasy articles and 10 pages of reading. I barely passed the N3 in December and I want to go for the N2 this December. Reading speed was very helpful for the N3(finished the reading section 25min early and got to check everything) and I’ve heard it is even more important for the N2, so I’m trying to get as much practice in as I can. However, I should also probably study in a way that isn’t reading, but that’s besides the point XD.
Reading Materials: NHKEasy-all articles Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets-already part way through, try to read 10 pages a day 夜は猫と一緒-rereading volume 2 and reading volume 3 (and maybe volume 4) 山と食欲と私-Another no furigana manga that is a little difficult to read now, but hopefully it gets easier! Way of the House Husband
More manga-will add if I get around to reading it

April 1st
Yesterday was a long day of hiking, car rides, and hanging out with friends. Left home at 6am and got home at nearly 11pm, but I still managed to get a couple pages of the hiking manga(shoved it in my bag because it was thematically appropriate lol) in while eating dinner at Sukiya (I am obsessed with their pudding these days). Technically speaking I read Japanese all the time since I live here and I need to for like road signs and stuff, so I’m going to limit myself to only books for this challenge XD.
April 3rd
Had a half day at work to get a bunch of reading done. Read 4 NHKEasy articles and pages 146-162 of Chamber of Secrets. Today is another day at work with little to do, so more reading time!
April 4th
Full day at work without much actual work to do, so I was reading throughout various meetings. Read pages 162-176 of Chamber of Secrets and four NHKEasy articles. I also translated the school lunch menu for the month and read the school lunch newsletter (definitely not 100% on the comprehension of that though).
Golden Week (May 3rd-7th)
While I did bring a book with me on vacation, I did zero reading. Please enjoy emojis to represent what I did those days. Nagano prefecture is AMAZING and I highly recommend everyone go check it out. I had a ton of fun and learned some new words: 新鮮(fresh)、コケ(moss)、内堀(inner moat)、外堀(outer moat).
Ooh I love the idea of marking each day with what you read, it reminds me of all the fancy notion database things people do. Hope you don’t mind me stealing this if you do figure out how to do it
@queenofthegods and @hanpt2, the way I do it is that I replace with the emoji I use for what I read. To make the calendar neater before we start, I replace all with . So it becomes changing the squares to the right emoji(s).
So right now April looks like this for me:
And to show what it looks like when it starts getting filled in (from my fall challenge last year):
Aaaah, my fault, sorry! Now I get what you mean. If you want to have the columns left-aligned (because of the numbers) but the title centered, then you need the div
The colons in the second row will left-align/center/right-align the whole column (title and contents) in the same way.
Can you or @NicoleIsEnough explain what you’re doing with divs? The consistent left alignment of the numbers is chefs kiss, but I’ve never done fancy formatting in the WK forums before so trying to figure it out is making my head hurt
Thank you for sharing your system! The emoji code makes a lot of sense, and I imagine you could link the dates to their corresponding post to make it even more functional. Very nice.
@queenofthegods and @hanpt2, below are the calendars I will be using (including June) with the div, aka only the weekday name row will have centered text. Below the code you can copy, I’ve showed what it looks like if some columns have extra emoji. (Do note that the code block might act as its own little box with scrolling and such…)
I’m really pleasantly surprised that my trendline is still positive. I thought for sure that I had slowed down too much. While it’s not as good as winter, it’s really nice to see how much more I can read compared to last year or even just fall.
Hi. I will try this challenge this year. I am really struggling with specific grammar patterns, such as relative clauses. I need to read more to improve my awareness. I will be using more of EasyNews and Matcha. If I am confident enough, I will surely try reading Harry Potter.
Hello everyone!
This is the first time for me to join this challenge (or any challenge here on WK). I am really looking forward to it and am excited to see, how many days I will be able to read the coming months!
Books/Manga/VN, that I am currently reading (way too many)
After both falling off the radar last challenge and finishing only one of my half-read books, I pretty much stopped reading consistently. That being said, I did end up reading every day during the challenge, so that’s still something. This challenge, though, I just want to get back to basics and read every day. I just started volume 1 of NANA, so I’ll be continuing with that for now. My other goal is to not fall off the face of the earth this time (which I feel like is always my secondary goal?).
Ready for the spring challenge! I only need to decide what to read next. With my rapidly growing tsundoku, I’m sure that’s not going to be a problem. For now, I only know that from April 8 onwards I will be reading 四畳半神話大系 with the ABC.
In the previous challenge I finished 11 books and read 2792 pages [1]. Excited to see how this one goes!
I finished 花束は毒 today and it was fine. I thought the very last scene in the book was a delight, but I really wasn’t that into the ‘final reveal’. My review is here but I didn’t write that much as it was neither a phenomenal book nor a terrible one. Probably a good entry-level adult novel, though. Provided you like crime.
Major spoilers, dark themes warning:
So throughout the book we are told that the man receiving letters (真壁) telling him to call off his marriage to かなみ was charged with rape 4 years ago, but that he denies doing this. Due to privacy laws, the victims name was never revealed to him and scrubbed from court documents. We come to find out the letters were actually intended for かなみ and were sent by her father who knows that she faked her rape charge against 真壁 using semen of his she stole from her part time job cleaning love hotels. She was obsessed with and stalking 真壁, but because she was a plain girl without connections she felt she’d have no chance at getting him. So she decided to destroy his social status.
I have…not so great feelings about using false rape charges as the ‘gotcha’. Part of it is probably cultural - it’s not unusual to hear men bemoaning woman being believed when they accuse someone of sexual misconduct. It’s a rare thing, and I doubt most women would want to undergo the scrutiny that comes with those charges (and in fact wanting to avoid that is why legitimate cases sometimes don’t get brought!) and every time it’s used as a plot point it kind of makes it seem more common than it is, to my eyes.
I have no idea if the plot twist was as unpleasant to Japanese readers, although quite a few people note they read it in the library for some reason
I would like to participate! Just need to wait a couple weeks to get my laptop fixed so I can add myself to the participant list and make a proper home post. I don’t want to mess anything up in the meantime. I’ll still read everyday until then, though!
