:Loud_sound: 🎙 Listen Every Day Challenge - Autumn 2024 🍄 🪵

Welcome to the “Listen Every Day” Challenge, autumn 2024 edition! :fallen_leaf: :coffee:

While it’s sad to see summer go, I’m sure we’re all looking forward to a nice crispy fall. So, how about listening to a podcast while carving pumpkins, or watching an episode of your favorite anime while sipping on a pumpkin spice latte? Whatever poison you choose, if you’re trying to improve your listening skills, then this is the place for you.

History of the challenge: In summer 2022, @KJules started the first listen every day challenge. Then in autumn, @omk3 took over, and hosted for a while. Eventually @omk3 asked for someone else to take over, so I’m hosting for the time being.

What is it: A place to set goals for yourself and talk about what you’ve been listening to. You can use it like a study log to keep track of what you’ve done, ask for advice and resource recommendations, or geek out/bond over common interests.

Beginners and experts alike are all welcomed.

Even though the challenge says every day, you’re welcome to do any kind of challenge you want. If there’s a particular series you want to finish, or if you want to reach a certain time goal, or some other kind of goal, feel free. This is a place to improve your listening ability, so do whatever you need to do to achieve that.

Your listening materials can be whatever you want, anime, podcasts, youtube videos, audiobooks, TV, JLPT listening quizzes - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: “Listening” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated!

To quote @omk3 quoting @KJules quoting @windupbird quoting @Redglare (please no one call the plagiarism police):

This is a thread for people who:
:bookmark: want to spend time more time listening
:bookmark: want to improve their comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge!

Are subtitles allowed?
Japanese subtitles are 100% allowed! Of course, the end goal is to listen without Japanese subs, but you’re welcome to take whatever steps necessary to help you reach that goal. If your reading skill is far above your listening skill, listening with Japanese subs is a great way to quickly catch it up.

Since the goal here is to not just listen to Japanese, but to actually understand what you’re hearing in Japanese, native language subtitles are strongly discouraged. Ideally you should be understanding 80%+ from your resources, but for tricky parts that you’re having trouble understanding, I recommend:

  • Slowing the video down. Sometimes characters get excited of flustered and speed up their pace temporarily, which can be hard to keep up with if that speed is above your current level. Try slowing the video down to .75 speed.
  • Pause the video to look up unknown words, then try to work out the sentence by reading it. After you’ve figured out the sentence, resume the video.

Repeat these steps throughout the whole scene, and by the end you should understand it enough to be able to move on.

Time frame: October 1 - November 30

The challenge will start on October 1st, and the “official” end is November 30th, but you’re challenge is personal to you, and you can start and stop at any time. You can stop at the end of October, or continue all the way into December, you can even start late if you need to.

Will you be participating?

Two things:

  1. I added it to the list of resources, but in case anyone didn’t see it, there is an anime club going on right now, and we’re about to vote on our next anime.
  2. While typing up this challenge, I realized that the spring/summer/fall/winter aspect only applies to people in the northern hemisphere. People from the southern hemisphere, how do you feel about the title of the challenge? Would you like it changed, or does it not bother you?

Not bothered by the title - very used to hemispherism by now (笑) - but thanks for noticing. Although maybe one year WK could make all the season challenges southern hemisphere-relevant

Tropical region doesn’t even have 4 seasons. (Typically 2-3 seasons of unequal lengths.)

I am not really bothered by that, but Q1-4 are more explanatory, though too business-like?

I guess because Japanese culture is so season focused, seasonal references are pertinent. And since Japan is in the Northern hemisphere, following those seasons is probably better but good to remember that other seasonal patterns exist

I’m going to try my best to participate after getting fed so many videos on YouTube about how listening immersion is the key to learning a language haha. My trip to Japan will also be during these two months so I am guaranteed to get a two week streak going at least  Looking forward to seeing what everyone will be listening to! I’m going to start out with the original Sailor Moon anime.

araigoshi’s 秋の聞く

So as I mentioned in the reading challenge, I ended up mostly skipping out on the summer challenges, but especially with WK level 60 in sight, I want to pick up listening again.

I’m going to be shifting my approach a little bit this time, to focus more on active listening. This means I won’t be counting コツ as listening practice this season, and I’m going to be stricter about counting “passive listening” if I’m not getting high enough comprehension, to focus more on active listening.

Content wise I’m probably going to have more anime and games this time. I won’t hit the target of 3 complete games I set out at the start of the year, as I sort of worried my video game attention span was an obstacle there, but let’s see if I can get one complete :stuck_out_tongue: I may need to set up the Japanese language on Digimon Survive on my main PC, not just my Steam deck, as sometimes I just don’t feel like playing on the portable screen at home. 妖怪ウォッチ is the other option, though it’s been so long since I played that that I might as well restart.

Last challenge actually helped me get some listening in a lot more often (even if a lot of it was just voiced video games, or EN-subbed anime where I tried to pay at least as much attention to the audio as to the subs), so I’ll be participating this time, too. I’ll probably try to do a bit more “proper”/“acceptable” listening practice, but if not, oh well. I go where my interests take me, and my interests are mainly sports anime and Dragon Quest.

I’ll be joining in this challenge. Listening is definitely one of my weakest skills, so I want to make time to improve it. Probably will use a mix of podcasts and audiobook type stories.

In November I’ll be doing a writing challenge that will take up most of my time, so my listening challenge will be during October. I resubscribed to Crunchyroll, so I intend to binge a lot of anime.

I came from the Listen Every Day Summer 2024 post just today, and I started WaniKani so late (around Sept. 2) so I decided I should just start here at the Autumn thread instead. I figured I can just write up on it on my upcoming study log anyways.

Posting this as a placeholder for home post.

The 3rd challenge I’ve signed up for today

I recently found a slow speaking, short episode podcast that I should be able to fit in every day. I’m hoping by the end of this challenge I’ll feel comfortable enough to explore other listening options as well!

polv’s Listening Challenge of Q4 2024 Home Post :maple_leaf:

I plan to listen to Chinese “language” every day for two months’ duration. Probably via teaching Chinese to Japanese people, like this one. I haven’t decided on the routes or YouTube channels (currently have only two).

The challenge is also for posting progress on listening to Japanese almost every day. (As well as seeing others’ progress.)

I started learning Japanese in Aug and can now begin to understand simple sentences. I’m joining this challenge because I need more incentive for listening in particular – I find it hard to practice during fragmented time (like when riding a bus or waiting for food) and need to commit a block of time in a quiet space every day.

I plan to listen to podcasts and YouTube videos designed for beginners. Watching anime or drama with subtitles (in my native language) is more fun, but doesn’t really improve my listening skills – I’ll just rely too much on subtitles.

Listening resources

Podcasts:

  • :night_with_stars: Oyasumi Japanese with Shun – I appreciate the combination of authentic content and beginner vocab. I also enjoy learning about life in New Zealand. Transcript available with subscription, but auto-generated subtitles also works.
  • :bear: Nihongo con Teppei – Seems really popular so I also tried. There’s lots of repetition, which helps with vocab, and I find Teppei really funny in a Japanese comedy way :joy:

Videos:

  • :mortar_board: ボンボンアカデミー – Cartoon videos with Japanese subtitles. I think it’s mainly intended for children, with mostly hiragana instead of kanji. But the cartoons are cute and well-made.
  • :cherry_blossom: 看動漫學日語~ (in Chinese) – The videos go through grammar used in anime clips. There are not enough videos to follow through an anime but it helps me know the difficulty level of each anime as well as learn new grammar.

I’m going to give this a try to help me pass the JLPT. I’ll probably listen/watch an episode of anime a day if I can.

This is driving me insane, why is it not centered??

Hello hello

I definitely rambled too much in the Read Every Day Challenge thread, but the tl;dr is that I’m getting back into studying Japanese after about a decade of no studying. I took 3 years of Japanese at the college level, and I feel like I was at a lower intermediate level back then.

I’ve been surprised to find that Nihongo Con Teppei is a bit too easy for me, even after all this time! I’ve listened to the first 15 episodes or so and have comprehended basically all of it, which is great! I’ve also been rewatching Jujutsu Kaisen, which I think counts, even though I can’t listen intently for more than a few seconds without feeling like my brain is being squished. Gonna keep my eyes peeled for resources that I find useful and can hopefully up my comprehension.

I don’t think I can commit to December, but I’m going to do my best in October/November!

Listening Log

October 1 - Nihongo con Teppei 16-17
October 2 - 23 minutes of this Unpacking video - very soothing!
October 3 - Finished the aforementioned Unpacking video, about 25 minutes.
October 4 - Didn’t make a lot of time for studying today, but I did watch one episode of JJK!
October 5 - Trying out a couple of other podcasts:
日本語の聴解のためのPodcast #1 - a bit advanced for me, but I understood most of those two minutes.
Oyasumi Japanese with Shun #1 - Self-introduction: Much more at my current level! I understood almost everything, even if some of the vocab comprehension came more from context than anything else. But I enjoyed this and would definitely keep listening for practice!
October 5 - Oyasumi Japanese with Shun #2
October 6-??? My family is in town and my studies have completely fallen off :smiling_face_with_tear:
