🔊 Listen Every Day Challenge - Winter 2024 ⛄❄

Welcome to the “Listen Every Day” Challenge, winter 2024 edition! :snowman_with_snow:

The new year is almost here, which means it’s almost time to start the next listen every day challenge! If you’re trying to improve your listening skills, want to listen to Japanese music, found an interesting Japanese youtuber, or have a plethora of unwatched podcasts in your playlist, then this is the place for you.

History of the challenge: In summer 2022, @KJules started the first listen every day challenge. Then in autumn, @omk3 took over, and has been making them ever since. However @omk3 has recently asked for someone else to take over, so I’m hosting for the time being.

What is it: A place to set goals for yourself and talk about what you’ve been listening to. You can use it like a study log to keep track of what you’ve done, ask for advice and resource recommendations, or geek out/bond over common interests.
Beginners and experts alike are all welcomed.

To quote @omk3 quoting @KJules quoting @windupbird quoting @Redglare (please no one call the plagiarism police):
This is a thread for people who:
:bookmark: want to spend time more time listening
:bookmark: want to improve their comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge!

Time frame: January 1 - February 28

This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! You can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you.

Your listening materials can be whatever you want, anime, podcasts, youtube videos, audiobooks, TV, JLPT listening quizzes - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: “Listening” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated!

Will you be participating?

Hearing japanese is totally the number one motive I’m now learning the language so this challenge is kind of made for me  The first time I checked a japanese word in a dictionary was because I heard it in an anime or a game, and part of my vocabulary is still coming this way.

When I don’t hear japanese, I miss it (really !), so I hope I’ll nail this challenge :yum:
As for my material, it will be games and anime mainly. However, I now listen to audio books or series (one of my dream goal is to be able to understand various dramas cds of my favorite games as soon as possible). And I’d like to listen more podcasts too, even if I don’t really know what to listen except for Nihongo con Teppei.
Also, one hour a week, I have an italki lesson when I talk a little with my teacher too. Listening some dialogs is part of our routine.

I listen a lot of j-music too, pop punk and anime music essentially, but it’s not really active listening so I won’t count it in my listening practice

polv’s Listening Challenge of Q1 2024 Home Post

A safe, as well as challenging, resource would be audiobooks alongside written (light) novels or essays. Videos with JP sub are usually easier, or not. Text before sound, whether JP sub or novel, isn’t bad once in a while.

I listen to podcast, but sometimes I am OK, sometimes not. I usually don’t read transcripts in this case.

Also, I am looking forward to participants’ shared resources.

Thanks OP again :hotdog:

Hi, I’ve decided to join this round :high_touch: I’ll be watching anime without subs to practice listening. I don’t really have a goal to do this every single day, but I don’t want a situation where I’m binging a series for a weekend and then leaving listening on the shelf for weeks on end either - I’d like to keep a balance. Ideal would be at least 1 episode per day and to prevent a break streak from occurring, i.e. 2 days in a row of unchecked boxes in my calendar. I’ll try to keep updates short and sweet because I’m also doing the reading challenge and, believe it or not, sometimes posting takes more time than I’d like to admit. The second half of 2023 kept me beyond busy, so much so that I gave up on posting my progress for the last challenge (which isn’t all that new, but it’s still frustrating). :weary: That being said, I think there was only one day that I missed, so even though things were hectic, I was pretty darn successful at sticking with listening (even during December!).

During the off-month, I started watching Rilakkuma and Kaoru (though I’m only 1 episode in). I’d like to continue working my way through the show during this challenge and then move on to Pokémon Concierge (it looks SO CUTE).

I watched four (4) episodes of Silent yesterday with the Japanese subtitles and 1 today (so far). While there were a ton of words/phrases I didn’t know, I understood what was happening in all the scenes. This show is so good, so after watching it, I will rewatch it to do some sentence mining.
I consider myself a lower intermediate learner, fighting my way this year to be solidly intermediate and then onto upper intermediate by the end of 2024.

study logreading challenge

Approaching this challenge a little different than I normally do - there are lots of reasons why I struggle to get some listening in every day, or why some days I can get more/less done, so I want to focus more on a weekly goal than a daily one. For this challenge, I am aiming to listen to at least 70 minutes of polite speech and 35 minutes of casual speech each week [1] . If I can manage to listen every day, then this only comes out to about 15 minutes of listening practice per session. In previous challenges, my goal was 10 minutes each day, so this adds a little extra time but also reduces the pressure if I have to miss a day for some reason (´・ᴗ・ ` )

My main sources for this challenge will be:

I completed the last 4 episodes of Silent today—a solid 9/10—almost 4 hours of Japanese listening.

Joining this challenge while listening to Japanese music. I am going to try to listen to 5-10 minutes every day but know that sometimes it’s not feasible. So on those days I will count listening to my favourite Japanese songs (that I can almost sing along to now as well :yum: )

:open_book: My home post in the Read Every Day Challenge

This year I will continue keeping a weekly log of my listening activities. I will be using the following sources:

  • :woman:t2: Comprehensible Japanese - I will listen to any new videos in the playlist “Absolute Beginner” & “Beginner”
  • Nihongo con Teppei - I will be listening to the “Japanese Podcast for Beginners” playlist
  • :ear: MyKikitori - Listening practice following the Genki I material.

I am aiming for one video a day.
