🎧 📚 🥣 Listen Every Day Challenge - Autumn 2026 🥣 📚 🎧

Welcome to the Autumn 2026 edition of the Listen Every Day Challenge. You’ve heard of 食欲の秋、読書の秋、スポーツの秋、maybe even 芸術の秋, but have you heard of 聴解の秋? It’s cooling down, the evening is still light and you’re thinking you might go for a walk, and when you go for that walk you decide to listen to a podcast or maybe even an audiobook….

Anyway, like the title says, this is a challenge to try to listen to something in Japanese every day. Officially, it runs over two months from October 1st, 2026 - November 30th 2026. But, of course, you can (unofficially) continue through to the end of December or just do a week-long challenge, a 10 day one or a single month - it’s up to you. And it doesn’t matter if you miss a day (or several) or start late - what’s important is that you build a regular listening practice over time - one you can enjoy!

How long do I have to listen each day? That’s up you, but probably a minimum of 10 minutes is a good place to start (ie the length of a short beginner friendly podcast or short YouTube grammar video).

What counts as “listening”? Podcasts, YouTube videos, movies, anime, documentaries, audiobooks, games, grammar videos, news reports etc.

Can I use subtitles.? Hell, yeah. You can use subtitles in any language - Japanese, your native language or (if you’re a polyglot) any one of your other languages. There are advantages to all variations.

Some important things to remember

  • Just because you can read novels doesn’t mean your listening skill will be at the same level. Listening and Reading are synergistic skills but they need to be worked on independently.
  • As with reading, it’s okay not to understand everything as long as you are getting the gist of what you’re listening to. If you’re struggling with a particular section of a recorded material, you can always stop and repeat it or check the closed captions. You can also adjust the speed of the recording.
  • One great advantage listening has over reading is that once you have a base line competence, you can do it anywhere - while commuting, doing chores, walking, running, exercising. There is no need to “find time” to do it - it can just be stacked onto another activity.

History of the challenge: In summer 2022, @KJules started the first listen every day challenge. Then in autumn, @omk3 took over, and hosted for a while. Eventually @omk3 asked for someone else to take over and @hotdogsuplex stepped up. The Autumn 2025 was their last challenge and so I volunteered to host. I’ve participated in quite a lot of past listening challenges and my listening ability has steadily improved as a direct result. I’ve also come across a lot of good material and been inspired by reading other people’s posts.

As with previous challenges, I’ll be aiming to listen to around a hour a day. I’ll mainly be listening to podcasts, audiobooks and Pimsleur, but I’ll also include some dramas, film, anime and TV shows.

:white_check_mark: means I’ve managed my hour minimum
:cross_mark: means I’ve done less than my hour minimum

Third participation in the listen every day challenge!

Listening hasn’t been too bad but I don’t think I get much out of it. Most of my learning comes from reading and I’ve noticed that I pick up more words listening from the work I do with reading. I think that’s because my reading is more intentional and I have a workflow to create and review new words. I don’t think I’ll get much out of doing the same kind of work with my listening when thinking about cost/benefit. I’ll keep track of my listening from habit and also to track how much time I spend on Japanese as well.

I have the JLPT N1 in december but I now realise I don’t have that much time to study in a traditional way so I’ll keep going through reading and looking up grammar points that I encounter like this. I started doing this yesterday and the first two grammar points are N1 level lol

I’ll be traveling for a month in October, with 10 days in Japan, so I might miss a few days or do the minimum during that time.

Welcome back!

I find listening and reading work synergistically for me - I pick up a word/phrase listening and I then notice it when I read and vice versa.

Plans and Goals

Most of my focus is still on learning to read, so my listening is completely based on what I can pick up through immersion. Anime with English subtitles as a fallback, listening to Satori reader and reading the Japanese text the second time through, listening to music, etc. I’ll eventually take a more focused approach in the future.

I’ve decided to give this a shot! I’ve drifted in and out of trying to listen to podcasts, so I think I need to be more consistent to get something out of it. I feel that all of the reading I’ve been doing is helping me comprehend listening more lately, and I suspect listening more will do something similar for reading.

Anyway, I don’t plan on doing as much timekeeping or notekeeping as in the reading thread, and I’m only really setting myself a small goal of about 5-10 minutes to start. I kinda envision listening to the same episode of an easy podcast 2-3 times per day to see if I can comprehend more on additional listen-throughs.

I might start with the Ninjapanese podcast, which I’d found awhile back and was able to follow really well. Recommendations for starting-level podcasts are welcome! (I tend to prefer female speakers)

Hiya folks! I’m pretty new to listening practice, I participated in the summer challenge somewhat inconsistently but that was my first exposure. My goal for this challenge is to listen to at least one episode of Japanese with Shun every day, likely during my commute. I’m also planning to relisten to a few of the earlier episodes as a way of checking my progress. Looking forward to working on this with everyone!

Not a female speaker, but I really enjoy Japanese with Shun! Pretty beginner friendly, a little fast compared to other beginner content but I feel like that helps for me personally (things like Slow Japanese I struggle to pay attention to because of the slow pace). Available on spotify and probably elsewhere, though there is a paywall for transcriptions.

First time trying to participate in the listening challenge! It’s definitely my weakest skill along with speaking. I’ll probably do a mix of anime, drama and podcast (so maybe I can finally clear some of my watch list)

Great!!

Think that’s really wise. I generally believe you’ll continue what you can manage and inevitably drop what you can’t - 10minutes a day equals over a hour a week!

Sayuri Saying is probably the easiest (and shortest)
Bite Size Japanese is great but avoid her earliest episodes where she didn’t quite understand what she was doing and kept using English

Steal the one from the reading challenge if necessary

Welcome! Good to see you here.

Thanks!

First time joining a listening challenge!
Listening is definitely my weak point at the moment (and the one I enjoy least, besides speaking), so I hope this challenge will get me to work on it more consistently .
I’m probably going to try watching anime or youtube videos with Japanese subs (or a podcast if my motivation is low), for around 30mins a day.
