🔉 🎙 Listen Every Day Challenge - Summer 2025 🥥 🌌

Welcome to the “Listen Every Day” Challenge, summer 2025 edition!

History of the challenge: In summer 2022, @KJules started the first listen every day challenge. Then in autumn, @omk3 took over, and hosted for a while. Eventually @omk3 asked for someone else to take over, so I’m hosting for the time being.

What is it: A place to set goals for yourself and talk about what you’ve been listening to. You can use it like a study log to keep track of what you’ve done, ask for advice and resource recommendations, or geek out/bond over common interests.

Beginners and experts alike are all welcomed.

Even though the challenge says every day, you’re welcome to do any kind of challenge you want. If there’s a particular series you want to finish, or if you want to reach a certain time goal, or some other kind of goal, feel free. This is a place to improve your listening ability, so do whatever you need to do to achieve that.

Your listening materials can be whatever you want, anime, podcasts, youtube videos, audiobooks, TV, JLPT listening quizzes - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: “Listening” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated!

To quote @omk3 quoting @KJules quoting @windupbird quoting @Redglare (please no one call the plagiarism police):

This is a thread for people who:

:bookmark: want to spend time more time listening

:bookmark: want to improve their comprehension

:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress

:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge!

Are subtitles allowed?

Japanese subtitles are 100% allowed! Of course, the end goal is to listen without Japanese subs, but you’re welcome to take whatever steps necessary to help you reach that goal. If your reading skill is far above your listening skill, listening with Japanese subs is a great way to quickly catch it up.

Since the goal here is to not just listen to Japanese, but to actually understand what you’re hearing in Japanese, native language subtitles are strongly discouraged. Ideally you should be understanding 80%+ from your resources, but for tricky parts that you’re having trouble understanding, I recommend:

  • Slowing the video down. Sometimes characters get excited or flustered and speed up their pace temporarily, which can be hard to keep up with if that speed is above your current level. Try slowing the video down to .75 speed.

  • Pause the video to look up unknown words, then try to work out the sentence by reading it. After you’ve figured out the sentence, resume the video.

Repeat these steps throughout the whole scene, and by the end you should understand it enough to be able to move on.

Time frame: July 1 - August 31

The challenge will start on July 1st, and the “official” end is August 31st, but your challenge is personal to you, and you can start and stop at any time. You can stop at the end of July, or continue all the way into September, you can even start late if you need to.

Will you be participating?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I’m starting late

  • Don’t know

Plans and Goals

I finished Genki, so my goals mostly will be to listen passively each day and just try to pick up vocab and grammar points that I know. I’ll still watch anime with English subtitles for now.

Summers are usually pretty busy for me so I won’t do many written translations. If I have time I might do one here and there of a Slow Japanese episode.

I guess I’m doing the listening challenge as well! My only real goal is to make a dent in the Comprehensible Japanese Complete Beginner and Beginner playlists. And I don’t mean the free ones on YouTube, oh no. I mean the paid ones. I decided to get a subscription earlier this year because I thought it was worth it since they have so much content, for a year at least. As of this moment, I have… 599 unwatched videos. This should be fun!

Goals:

Hey y’all! Joining the listening challenge for the month of July to get those numbers up! The goal is simple- 30 hours total in one month. Sources will be varied- I’d like to spend some time on audiobooks but those get tiring after a while so it’ll probably be easier to get to my hours goal if I throw in youtube and anime and so on. First day of the Summer Listening Challenge - I’d like to aim for an hour a day, but there may be days (like today) when I do way more and days where I just manage a short podcast. I won’t be too fussed if it’s the latter. It’s the every day aspect that’s important.

i decided for my listening practice i’ll be watching pokemon :3c
largely due to it being the easiest to get my hands on
watched the first episode today
i’m going to try to resist pausing for the most part, especially because then the sound glitches, meaning i have to back up a bit :T (on my desktop now and just checked, it’s my laptop being weird, so hopefully i can find a solution for that…)
move names will be hard to understand, but they’re not really important, i think
pokemon names should be easy enough to recognise with the original series, and they don’t really talk about any without showing them, usually
anyway, for now, i guess i’m just getting the context from the video, while doing my best to follow along with the subtitles
they don’t have furigana, but like i said, i don’t want to be pausing

what’s that?
did i cry at the first episode?
you’re crying! >:C

Almost forgot that I was starting this challenge today and then I kinda didn’t wanna. Actually starting the challenge by finishing an audiobook because I started アリス&ペンギン book 2 ages ago and hadn’t finished it. Then I chose some random other children’s audiobook to start because I can do whatever I want yay!

Plans and Goals

Do at least 30 minutes of listening a day. Planning to start off with comprehensible input from Youtube until I have close to 100% comprehension of intermediate material, then move on more native-speed listening content in the form of podcasts. My goal is to be able to listen along to Little Witch Academia on Netflix and understand most of it by the end of the challenge.

I’ve been listening to podcasts while taking a walk for the past month or so, and I’d like to maintain that habit hence joining this challenge. I usually go with Yuyu or MikuRealJapanese and supplement it with 10-15min videos from random YouTubers.
