🥗🎧📺 Summer 2026 edition of the Listen Every Day Challenge🎧 📺 🥗

Welcome to the Summer 2026 edition of the Listen Every Day Challenge. If you’re in the Northern hemisphere, you’re probably (not?) looking forward to hot, sweaty days and lots of watermelon. Here in the South, we’re wearing our puffy jackets and cursing the darkness as we leave work (except for Tasmanians who are joyfully jumping naked into the surf).

Anyway, like the title says, this is a challenge to try to listen to something in Japanese every day. Officially, it runs over two months from July 1st, 2026 - August 31st 2026. But, of course, you can (unofficially) continue through to the end of September or just do a week-long challenge, a 10 day one or a single month - it’s up to you. And it doesn’t matter if you miss a day (or several) or start late - what’s important is that you build a regular listening practice over time - one you can enjoy!

How long do I have to listen each day? That’s up you, but probably a minimum of 10 minutes is a good place to start (ie the length of a short beginner friendly podcast or short YouTube grammar video).

What counts as “listening”? Podcasts, YouTube videos, movies, anime, documentaries, audiobooks, games, grammar videos, news reports etc.

Can I use subtitles.? Hell, yeah. You can use subtitles in any language - Japanese, your native language or (if you’re a polyglot) any one of your other languages. There are advantages to all variations.

Some important things to remember

  • Just because you can read novels doesn’t mean your listening skill will be at the same level. Listening and Reading are synergistic skills but they need to be worked on independently.
  • As with reading, it’s okay not to understand everything as long as you are getting the gist of what you’re listening to. If you’re struggling with a particular section of a recorded material, you can always stop and repeat it or check the closed captions. You can also adjust the speed of the recording.
  • One great advantage listening has over reading is that once you have a base line competence, you can do it anywhere - while commuting, doing chores, walking, running, exercising. There is no need to “find time” to do it - it can just be stacked onto another activity.

History of the challenge: In summer 2022, @KJules started the first listen every day challenge. Then in autumn, @omk3 took over, and hosted for a while. Eventually @omk3 asked for someone else to take over and @hotdogsuplex stepped up. The Autumn 2025 was their last challenge and so I volunteered to host. I’ve participated in quite a lot of past listening challenges and my listening ability has steadily improved as a direct result. I’ve also come across a lot of good material and been inspired by reading other people’s posts.

お互いに頑張りましょう!

spring '26 listening challenge :cherry_blossom:

I discovered from watching the news and anime in Japan (i.e. where you can actually have Japanese subtitles) that my reading is actually pulling ahead of my listening skill! That’s crazy! Excited to challenge myself to pull them more equal

Welcome to the Summer Listening Challenge!

Thanks for organizing everything, @Lisaveeta!

Plans and Goals

Most of my focus is still on learning to read, so my listening is completely based on what I can pick up through immersion. Anime with English subtitles as a fallback, listening to Satori reader and reading the Japanese text the second time through, listening to music, etc. I’ll eventually take a more focused approach in the future.

I’m pretty good about saying I’ll do this kind of thing and then disappearing day 3 recently so we’ll see  but I think I’m feeling like I’ve been a little loose about the JP stuff I’m doing recently so some sort of specific focus on training up my listening further might be in order. I’m largely comfortable but still lose some words with more loose speaking styles and the like.

Thus, I’ve gotten my hands on the show 人志松本のすべらない話, a format where comedians just tell stories. Each episode is about 45 minutes I think; I’d like to try to just watch one per day and see if I can get a little better about following the way they speak easier, for as long as I have episodes or until my life gets in the way and we’ll go from there haha.

July 1st - Let the Challenge begin!

While I’m ahead with my reading goal for the year, my listening goal is, uh, behind. My only goal is to listen or watch something for at least 30 minutes every day.

Audiobooks listened to in the 2026 Spring Challenge

Intending to listen to around an hour a day - will be using a mixture of Pimsleur, podcasts, audiobooks with the occasional anime/film/ drama thrown in.
I won’t be ticking any boxes, but will be recording my listening materials.

I managed to keep it up for Spring 2026, I want to keep going for Summer 2026
This will be mostly the immersion part of my Japanese studying strategy, vocab and grammar will be coming mostly from reading and talking with Japanese people.

I’m planning on retaking the JLPT N1 in December to improve from my previous score from 10 years ago. I got 105/180 then which is slightly above the passing grade of 100. I’m also planning on trying to move to Japan in the next year or two via HSP visa.

Apart from Japanese, I am also refreshing my Chinese, which was at intermediate B1-B2 level about 16 years ago but I haven’t kept it up since then. I’ve been working on it for the past two months, 95% on vocabulary lists so I need to include more input and output.

These are part of a project of mine to reach B2 level in 7 languages by the end of 2029. French, English and Japanese are already there. I’m working on Chinese at the moment and will be aiming to get HSK6 in the next year. Then depending on my situation I’ll pick between German (A2?), Italian (B1?) or Korean (A2?).
