🔊 🎙 Listen Every Day Challenge - Summer 2024 🌻 🏖

Welcome to the “Listen Every Day” Challenge, summer 2024 edition! :sunglasses:

If you’re trying to improve your listening skills, want to listen to Japanese music, found an interesting Japanese youtuber, or have a plethora of unwatched podcasts in your playlist, then this is the place for you.

History of the challenge: In summer 2022, @KJules started the first listen every day challenge. Then in autumn, @omk3 took over, and has been making them ever since. However @omk3 has recently asked for someone else to take over, so I’m hosting for the time being.

What is it: A place to set goals for yourself and talk about what you’ve been listening to. You can use it like a study log to keep track of what you’ve done, ask for advice and resource recommendations, or geek out/bond over common interests.
Beginners and experts alike are all welcomed.

To quote @omk3 quoting @KJules quoting @windupbird quoting @Redglare (please no one call the plagiarism police):
This is a thread for people who:
:bookmark: want to spend time more time listening
:bookmark: want to improve their comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge!

Time frame: July 1 - August 31

This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! You can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you.

Your listening materials can be whatever you want, anime, podcasts, youtube videos, audiobooks, TV, JLPT listening quizzes - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: “Listening” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated!

Will you be participating?

The Summer That Hotdog Gets Really Good at Listening

This time I’ll be doing something a little different: rather than focusing on the every day aspect, I’m going to focus on the type of content consumed, and intensive listening over extensive. My end goal for this summer is to get comfortable watching content with Japanese subtitles.

I’ll use three main resources:
1: Jujutsu Kaisen season 1. I’ve seen this ten times both in English and Japanese, I know it word for word by now, so I can really focus on listening instead of figuring out the story. I’ll only look at the subtitles if I get stumped.
2: Ghibli movies. I haven’t seen very many. I watched Ponyo as a kid and it freaked me out, Kiki’s Delivery Service as a pre-teen, and Grave of the Fireflies a few years ago. None were in Japanese though. I’ve made a list of all the ones I still want to watch. Since I don’t know the stories, I’ll be looking at the subtitles more intently.
3: YouTube. I want to watch 20 hours of YouTube. I really like あかね’s video style, and she has a ton of content.

polv’s Listening Challenge of Q3 2024 Home Post :beach_umbrella:

I plan to listen everyday for 2 months’ duration.

In addition, I’ll think of how to get listening exercises in. Though for vocabulary part, I can say I got many from reading and games/VN.

5 audiobooks. Maybe 本好きの下剋上 series, if not change of plans. Anyway, preferrably with text. I’ll also keep eyes on Natively book clubs that have audiobooks. I don’t see many in WaniKani.

:ferris_wheel: soggy’s challenge review :ferris_wheel:

Total Time: 37 hrs 50 mins

I ended up not pushing through to 40 hours. I figured I was close enough. Although, funnily enough, today when I got to work I found myself putting on a 30 minute episode of YUYU and listening to the whole thing, even though it’s now the off month! I guess I’ve created a pretty good habit, then.

I mainly used podcasts- 4898 American life and YUYUの日本語。I also listened to a few chapters of ふしぎ駄菓子屋 audiobook. Youtube and anime contributions are probably in the range of 5-10 hours.

Overall, my impression of the challenge was that 20hrs/month is more difficult to fit into my schedule than I first expected, although it’s definitely doable. The biggest gaps came from when I was not at work, because I don’t do much at home where I could add podcast listening; I have to choose to watch something like youtube/anime/dramas and I just don’t generally reach for more than like 15 minutes of those in a day.

Content:

I naturally gravitate towards podcasts and audiobooks for these challenges because they are the most dense. The youtube and anime that I used had a lot less speaking, so they didn’t feel quite as efficient. My overall goal is to be able to graduate to audiobooks, so I want to practice my skills with materials that are at least as dense as audiobooks.

I listened to a good amount of 4989 American life, and then by the end of the challenge, I found I was naturally not reaching for it, so I didn’t push it. I began listening to YUYUの日本語 which I quite enjoyed because of its relaxed style. I find it easy to put on when I’m doing other tasks and not feel too worried about missing little bits.

Comprehension:

I would rate my comprehension of conversational podcasts as decent :+1: The biggest change came from audiobook comprehension. I discovered that I am able to listen to new chapters of Zenitendou without having read them before, and with some focus and effort, I can follow the plot.

Now, these are children’s books, so the plot has a fairly low barrier to entry. I’m sure my comprehension is at best only 60-70% of what’s being said, but it was actually enough in most chapters. At first I was doubting what I heard, thinking like, I must be misunderstanding major information here, but by confirming with people who had already read the stories, I learned my understanding was correct!

Also, I believe both my extensive listening and my extensive reading over the course of the challenge have combined in order to improve my overall parsing of sentences. I’ve become pretty good at noticing which key word in a sentence is the right one to look up in order to understand what’s going on, which I think is a good improvement. I’ve noticed some nice synchronicity in my listening and reading in other ways as well- things like learning a word from reading and noticing it in listening material later and so on.

Stamina

I believe around the end of the first month of the challenge, I posted about how I still hadn’t noticed a major change in my listening stamina. I was still noticing the Headache of Knowledge approaching whenever I tried to listen to around an hour of material. Funnily enough, I think that’s improved. It’s something you notice when it’s there, but don’t notice when it’s gone. Earlier today I listened to 30 minutes of Yuyu and I don’t feel any more tired after that. If that’s the only thing I gain from the challenge, I’ll count it as a win, because I’ve had a much harder time improving my listening stamina than my reading stamina.

I’m going to stop posting daily updates here during the off month, but I’ll still be lurking! And I’ll keep listening to stuff, just probably not quite as much. I really enjoy the camaraderie in these threads and seeing what everyone is up to.

Hello again everyone! Back this time for a more subdued challenge than my last big 100 hour challenge  Thank you to @hotdogsuplex for hosting again and keeping this going! :purple_heart:

Since my last listening updates, I’ve had a bit of an interesting change of pace. My english youtube for the last month or two has become completely unusable (like, literally won’t play videos or load pages correctly sometimes) due to a new testing layout, and so I’ve spent a lot of time as I wind down for bed doing extensive listening on my japanese youtube account.

It’s not particularly directed listening, and I usually am not stopping to look much up unless it feels essential, but it is still japanese words I can mostly understand getting into my brain in some way. For this challenge I’m hoping to bring back a little bit more… intentional? listening practice into my routine.

Unfortunately, about the same time this youtube stuff was happening, the streamer who I spent so much of my 100 hour challenge watching had to go on a serious extended medical leave, and has been gone for about 2 months while she recovers. Hopefully at some point during this time period, she will be back and healthy, but in the meantime I have built up a good repertoire of other streamers that I enjoy watching. I will probably continue to watch mostly RTA and speedrun videos, plus my smattering of vtubers and keep working on fleshing out my japanese youtube channel during this challenge. I think I’d also like to finish another season or two of anime with jp subs. I did s2 of ゆるキャン△ a few months ago and really enjoyed that, but I’d just need to pick out a good series for it.

I’ll be trying to post more updates this time around than the like 2 I posted in the last challenge, but since I am generally listening before bed, no hard promises

@javerend Not gonna lie when I got the notification that you posted here my immediate thought was “Oh god what are we in for this time…”

Me too  It’s so much harder than reading… I’m just making sure my listening skill doesn’t fall too far behind everything else.

my log

:hear_no_evil:

After joining the Spring 2023 Read every day challenge, I ended up with a read every day habit that has stuck ever since (and a WK foruming habit which takes up about just as much time… :yum:) and my reading level has improved a lot! Perhaps listening every day can do the same thing. Previously my listening practice was listening along to Satori stories, and now that I’m transitioning/graduating from that, I need to experiment with some solid replacements.

The tricky part is - I’m not a natural podcast / youtube / audiobook type person, so it doesn’t have a firm place in my life. I like to exercise without headphones, I don’t have long drives, I don’t do repetitive tasks where I could listen to it in the background and still pay attention. So listening for me is its own deliberate activity, like taking a break from work, or relaxing after work, or (at a loss to think of what else I will anchor this to).

Favorite listening resources so far:

  • Audiobooks for Zenitendo series
    • I read these books so I can listen to previous chapters with good comprehension, or listen along to current chapters while reading
  • 4989 American Life podcast
    • They are comprehensible enough that I can just listen. I think what helps is that the topic of conversation is generally familiar, so it’s way easier than other podcasts not intended for learners. After she realised so many learners were attracted to her podcast (despite that not being her intention), she made transcripts available from around episode 89.
  • Story podcast - 黒木渚の夜のまどろみ 〜大人のための読み聞かせ〜
    • These are short stories written and narrated by a musician / writer 黒木渚. I like the general light mystery mood, and the narration is calming since they are meant for falling asleep to. They are not always comprehensible for me, but if I make it all the way it feels like such a victory to understand the whole story!

I stole the pretty calendar from @javerend I hope that is ok!
