1 episode from JapanesePod101:
Say Hello in Japanese No Matter What the Time of Day
Because that was to easy, was intrigued by macalys (tnx) podcast. I gave the frist episode a go.
I was able to recognise some words even one I have learned to day:
少し - すこし - a little, a few
Which telt great and good for reinforcing it.
Even watched Japanese folk tale for kids, and focusing on listening.

Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year! Thank you @hotdogsuplex for keeping the challenge going!
Last year during winter I’d participated in both the listening and reading challenges for the first time, and the listening challenge in particular proved to be a boon for me as I got to get some good listening practice done as well as ended up discovering so many great podcasts and YouTube channels that I continued to listen to/watch throughout the rest of the year. One of my favourite podcasts from last year was the Thinking in Japanese Podcast which I plan to continue listening. I’m also hoping to practice listening watching doramas on Netflix with Japanese subtitles using the Language Reactor extension for vocabulary lookup & mining. Hoping to share my daily updates here and looking forward to having great discussions in this thread
Listened to the first two episodes of the Nihongo con Teppei SLEEP podcast. It felt nice to start with a new podcast in the new year; Teppei san was speaking slowly and clearly, and had I not been working simultaneously, I’d probably have actually fallen asleep
Will recommend this podcast if you want something easy and fun to listen to after a day of school/work, can be a good way to wind down after a long day
Welcome to the first day of the challenge everyone! Today I watched this video from Comprehensible Japanese about cherry blossom trees in different seasons. I was actually participating, speaking along with her and answering her questions.
New words:
銀杏 - Ginko tree
散る - to fall (leaves, blossoms)
枯れる - to wither (of a plant)
蕾 - flower bud
おしまい - “the end”/closing/that’s all
I was able to figure out 散る and 蕾, for 枯れる I knew it had to do with dying, and おしまい was obviously some kind of ending. But 銀杏 I had no idea.
Thank you to everyone who decided to participate! Looks like we’ve had a great first day and I’m super proud of you all

I chose to listen to the same video @hotdogsuplex chose to listen to yesterday from Comprehensible Japanese. I really liked being able to understand almost everything
Missing a day is art, unless I miss a week or something.

YUYU, the latest episode, plus a little more from Patreon.
本好きの下剋上 Vol.3 : Prologue + Ch.1, then Vol.2 on paper making preparation. All while looking at the text. I have got 本好き book series for free or cheap or something, up to Vol.12; and listening is all in Audible 聴き放題.
Listening is hard What’s hard about having low level listening skills?
1 - The amount of unknown vocab. Even if I know the word when I see it written with kanji, it doesn’t help if I can’t identify it when spoken.
2 - Forgetting what was said at the beginning by the end of a long sentence.
3 - When it’s too fast paced and I’m not done processing.
Hmm, how do I say this. It’s a long story, but in short: Last year, I realized I have a hearing problem. So I went to my doctor, got a referral to an audiologist and eventually got hearing aid. Even my friend who has been watching anime for years but haven’t studied Japanese catches words better than me Ah, I remember that moment. Devastating, but also hilarious. I never knew my hearing was lower than average compared to others at my age (still in my twenties).
4 - Often not catching what is being said (especially consonants) which makes lookups a pain.
Makes me wonder how did I pass N2 lmao. Just gotta keep at it and get more exposure. やるしかないわね!
I got sucked into the live news coverage for that JAL crash this morning, such a crazy start to the year for Japan I’ve also been working on a 日本語の森 N3 video for both listening and vocab practice. I want to finish their N3 videos before switching over to N2 in a few weeks/months. I hope everyone is enjoying the start of the listening challenge
Listening is also one of my 2024 goals, but unlike reading I have less of a defined target. I’m also being (for now at least) pretty generous with what I count as listening. e.g. デジモンサヴァイブ has voice acting, so I’m qualifying that as listening, and if I watch anime, I plan to count those too.
Today I watched this video from 日本語の森 about the difference between おかげで and せいで. I kinda already inferred the general difference, so this just reaffirmed that.
New words:
気のせい - just one’s imagination
脂身 - fat of meat
褒める - to praise
めっちゃ - very; extremely; excessively
Ah - I discovered how to turn on Japanese subtitles - it goes by very quickly, too quickly in many cases. The kanji font is a little too small for my liking (for characters that I don’t yet know).
Watching it with Japanese subtitles will be a challenge for me - but it’s a good challenge. I think that I may get a lot of use out of the “go back 10 seconds” button.
The comments from viewers that show up in the upper left are very distracting - I will have to figure out how to shut those off.
Nihongo con Teppei SLEEP Episode 1 - let my thoughts carry me away in the middle but managed to get back to it by the end
More Learn Japanese with Tanaka San, this time according to their method on using Japanese material (listen, listen with subtitles, dictation, check dictation, speak along): Egg San’s diary, episode 1 - I really like doing this exercise because it forces me to pay attention through it all (especially during the dictation part).
Yeah, I think I’m gonna have to wear my hearing aids while watching. Simply just cranking up the volume doesn’t work. Just too bad I can’t wear in-ear headphones at the same time, have to wear over-ear headset for it to pick up sounds.
@hotdogsuplex I noticed that the “past challenge threads” section in the OP doesn’t have the previous challenge in there. Could you add it, please?
@omk3 Would it be okay if I (or someone else) added the emoji at the beginning of the title in the summer 2023 challenge? Sorry if I’m being very fussy, ahahha.
