Reflection around goals and method (Warning: long)
So far I haven’t really had any goals regarding how to read. Just everyday, or at least trying not to skip two days in a row. I did have a goal in 2025 of reading 50 books. That’s approx. one book per week. Turns out I’m not very routinized at sitting down to read (even tho I’ve been doing this challenge since it started in 2021!? 何言ってんのw). The 義務感 about posting every day is strong enough to read at least a little bit every day. Thinking back, my mental image of reading is usually 10-30min right before going to bed, often cutting into sleep time. That’s not good. Sleep is bigger priority. Maybe I should read more during lunch time at work as well. And before getting up in the morning instead of reading the news.
Why not routinized? Part of it stems from 推し活 not making time for reading. Since I spend a lot of time following live streams and catching up on streams, in 2025 I’ve joined the listening challenge to keep track of listening hours and thereby have a sense of how I’m spending my time.
Just reading every day with no goal in mind might not be enough for me. I want to create routine. But it’s not like I want it 100%. That’s why I end up not getting 夢中 about reading. Unless it’s a very good book or series.
What do I want? Would be nice with more Readathon-like situations. I really like the readathons. Made me stretch myself and reach further heights. I’ve read Kusuriya 14 (304p) in 24h, I’ve read 150k characters in 24h, I’ve read for 10h even while recovering from the flu. So if I spend more time during the weekends dedicated to reading, that’d be cool. Maybe I’ll have my own mini-readathon one weekend a month? My three-week work schedule would nicely allow for that.
In 2025 I had the goal of reading 50 books (novels, not manga) and 15000 novel pages. As of Dec 28 2025, I’ve read 44 books and 13934 pages. One weakness with my counting method is how I’m counting pages. So far I’ve only cared about finishing books and then count the pages after completing the book. I want to count pages for each update. Downside is I read mostly ebooks, so it’s going to be mostly approximations. I think that’s fine.
50 book/15000 pages is very reachable if I just make the time for it. Should I go for 60 books in 2026 just to keep the pressure up? Do I even want to spend that much time reading? That’s the question. It’ll have to simmer for now.
It’s okay to not want something 100% and still challenge oneself. I’m doing this for tracking and motivation purposes. I kind of want to track lookups too, I feel like it’s becoming less and less recently. Depends on the book, of course. But at the same time I don’t want to spend time doing that. But I want to see the trend curve and where we’re at.
Anyway, I’ll make goals with the assumption of reading 15k pages in a year.
Goal:
・Post every day in Jan/Feb
・Read for at least 2h every Saturday and Sunday (using stopwatch)
・Read 1300 pages per month. That’s 325-ish pages per week
