So I messed up on the table a bit. If you notice an odd gap in March, it’s because “March” is part of the table but needs to be “Mar” to make the alignment work. Sorry about that! I hope it hasn’t been bothering people too much.
If you don’t understand what I mean, please check out the corrected version in the 2nd post
Thank you to DIOBerry and windupbird for keeping this going!
2024 Goal: Read something on a regular basis, even if it’s only a page or a paragraph. (Every day might be a bit too much to hope for!) Might or might not log page counts, not sure.

Reading: Jam Maker on Satori Reader Horimiya vol 1, physical manga and I finally got a magnifying lens for the teeny furigana (past ABBC thread for vol 1; Spin-off reading group for later volumes) This Art Club Has a Problem Beginner Book Club, though TBH not sure if I’ll keep going with this one. easy news articles on Watanoc or NHK whatever else comes up…
New year, new challenge! Always excited about these although I won’t be home for a couple of weeks during January so it might be hard to do the challenge during those. I’ve totally fallen off the regular reading wagon towards the end of the year so the main objective is to get back to consistent reading. Apart from that I have more specific goals but these might change as I go:
What I will be reading
IBC book あなたも殺人犯になれる!
ABC book 傲慢と善良
汐音’s バリバリ VN route
ハイキュー Vol.1
ハイキュー Vol.2
ハイキュー Vol.3
ハイキュー Vol.4
My first foray into books (okay, not my first, but hopefully the first one I finish?) with 15 min of 夜カフェ 1 | L22.
/edit did another 15 min and finished chapter 1, but my head is swimming (not helped I’m trying to work at the same time…) I hope I can acclimatise quickly, but having the old book club around to see other people dissecting the chapter content is very helpful.
These last few read every day challenges, I’ve joined but then stopped pretty quickly. But this year, my #1 goal with Japanese is to read every single day. More than reaching the end of Wanikani, more than learning more grammar, I want to rebuild a good reading habit. No goals for # of books this year, just going to try and read a bunch!!
I haven’t joined any reading challenges since my first one in the winter of 2023. Time to get back at it again!
Inspired by @MissDagger 's multilingual calendar I will do the same for Japanese and Spanish primarily and maybe some Korean with a goal to read in another language everyday.

Wrap Up
すごい! 完璧数点だね! I’m so surprised I was able to read everyday for the last two months. I honestly wasn’t expecting that from myself. The last three days of February were particularly tough for me. I almost gave up thinking to myself that hey I’ve done so well, why not give yourself a break one or two days, but the feeling of wanting a perfect score was stronger thank goodness.
I really enjoy having a mix of reading materials. When I used to read regularly in English, I was the type never to start a new book before I finish the one I’m reading. The same goes with crafts - I would usually finish my pending project first before starting a new one. But somehow with Japanese, it feels different. I feel sort of refreshed that I can go back and forth between different materials.
Recap of each month below for when I’m feeling demotivated.
January
Read 29/31 days in Japanese
Read 10/31 days in Spanish
Finished 聞き耳ラジオ on Satorireader
Began playing Animal Crossing in Japanese
Began rereading Ruri Dragon
February
Read 29/29 days in Japanese
Read 3/29 days in Spanish
Finished Sakura and Suzuki’s long distance relationship on Satorireader
Finished up to Week 8/9 of Ruri Dragon (3 more chapters to go!!)
I’ve been chipping away at this for the past 6 days, and this is definitely what I would class intensive reading It’s way beyond my current vocab ability and requires a lot of energy to work through, but I’m enjoying the story and the art is pretty so it’s all good. The temptation to get the entire main series from eBay is strong right now…
Added 20 new vocab cards to Anki from it today including:
遠征 えんせい tour (by a sports team or a perfomer)
強豪 きょうごう a powerhouse, incredibly strong team
差し金 さしがね instigation, suggestion
操る あやつる to manipulate someone, to pull the strings
January 1st on a Monday, can a year start more goal oriented focused?
In any case, it is only halfway through the day here, and I read the weekly pages for the Daily Stoic journal thing I bought last year. That would be English (represented by the UK flag in the table in my home post ).
I’m playing it more casual in many ways for this challenge. Reading is on my priority list but at the very bottom, so while I have a couple of touchstone times (beginning and end of day) that I hope to get to it, the rest of the day (and the day before) will decide whether I get to reading more than anything.
It also means I’m playing my posts here pretty casual. No posting template with nice links (sorry!), but you can find me through the table in the second post, so shouldn’t be too bad if anyone is interested. I might occasionally choose to link it.
I might get more reading done later, or I might not. I have two other very important priorities where I still have quite a bit of time I need to spend on one, and the other one is priority one (piano!) so will get its 20-30 mins.
Another year of challenges! This time I am limitimg me to a fairly strict schedule. I finally want to finish reading Kiki’s Delivery Service. While I’ve read a lot of it, I’ve really only got about 10-30% of it from my first read-through, which leaves me wanting to re-read it a bit more slowly and meticiously now.
Anyway, 4 challenges per year a 2 months each for 10 chapters (Kiki has 11 but I know the first one well enough) makes it roughly 2,5 chapters per challenge. Or ~32 pages per month with the edition I’m using. Hey, that looks like I only need to read one page per day! How neat.
I hope that this way I can take enough time and care with learning enough vocab and puzzling out all the grammar. Don’t yet know whether I will update weekly or do a daily reflection of what I gleaned from the text. We’ll see.
The second half of 2023 kept me beyond busy, so much so that I gave up on posting my progress for the last challenge (which isn’t all that new, but it’s still frustrating). That being said, I think there was only one day that I missed, so even though things were hectic, I was pretty darn successful at sticking with reading (even during December!).
During the off-month, I started playing 逆転裁判 on my 3DS. I’d like to continue working my way through the first case during this challenge, though I don’t want to put pressure on myself to complete the whole game by the end, so I’ll just take it a bit at a time. I also want to get back to reading ペンギン・ハイウェイ, which I fell off of.
starting off with kind of mid momentum, was exhausted when i got up this morning (not new year’s related) and managed less than i normally would but that’s okay!
i’m partway through vol 5 of ouran, so i read another chapter of that (19? 20? whatever the second to last one before the extras is, the second half of the hikaru/haruhi date arc), and used a randomiser to get my next digital manga (ドラゴン、家を買う) but didn’t really start it. looks to be little bit more difficult than some of the other ones i’ve read, but can’t really judge on five pages.
didn’t read a full nhk article (as i usually do), but did keep up with the news of the earthquake and tsunami warnings as it came out over the day. did a full granblue chapter (yep, still going, just the 200 chapters to go or whatever). no dictionary entry cos honestly i clean forgot.
oh and what i read over the break
いのち (five volumes) - eh. if you’re in for a short melodrama (and can cope with darker themes) then this is for you, but i think there’s probably other works which have attempted the same idea and done it much better. it shows its age
金の靴 銀の魚 - really, really weird short story collection. heavy (surreal) self-harm warning for the first chapter, but there’s also some comedy chapters and some that are more like dramas. there’s even an 穴 story for the person reading those! on the harder end, especially that last story phew
禍々しき獣の逝く果ては1巻 - dark fantasy, everyone looks like they walked straight out of castlevania and that’s basically the kind of tone you’re in for, but fairly accessible and light on the jargon. looks like it should be BL but isn’t (tho there are vibes). i’d read the rest
ouran vol 4 and half of 5 - continues to be difficult, especially the first chapter of vol 5 oh my goooood, hated it. but, aside from that, it feels like it’s finding its stride now, so i’ll keep going
恋したので配信してみた - ecchi comedy manga. not my usual fare but it was fun enough, if with some stuff that rubbed me the wrong way. if vol 2 is free/on sale i might get it
oh i forgot about エンバンメイズ, didn’t finish that. weirdly it was more ecchi than the ecchi manga, and in a very uncomfy kind of way. shame cos violent underground darts kinda-battle manga is a fun concept
2024 begins well as I caught up on entire week 5 of the ホリミヤ ABBC reading !
I really really love this manga (and the anime), I’m so glad I’m reading it again in japanese !
Today I read the entry for たとえ〜ても (JLPT N3) | Bunpro – Japanese Grammar Explained on Bunpro.
It apppears 3 times in あなたも殺人犯になれる!, I don’t think I had understood those sentences well at the time so it was nice to read them with the new knowledge.
This will be my first time joining a Read Every Day Challenge. My main goal is to form a habit of reading native japanese content. There will be some challenging days due to my work schedule, let’s see if I can work around that.
Happy new year everyone and hello again! Like a few others here, I’ll be doing a multilingual challenge. I’ll tick a box like this if I read that day in Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, or English.
I will try to read something every day. Stuff at work doesn’t count, but books in Danish (my native language) or English, and any Japanese material do count. If it is in Japanese, I will mark it with . Otherwise I will mark it with .
