It’s technically still September for me, but I’m in a good place to start so may as well kick off. It’s October already in other time zones, too!
I’m about to go on a trip, and I did not manage to finish 天使の傷跡 on time, so I’m bringing it along. I also need to read the final week of 十角館の殺人事件 which I may or may not do on the ride to my destination. Depends on how pretty the scenery is. 
I also started reading 三体 and I’m still in the first few pages. I knew this book would be hard for me, but I’m already pausing to absorb sentences. Maybe it will get smoother after the initial scene setting, but it’s also sci-fi so who knows. The writing style is delightful, though.
It’s my first book in Japanese that’s translated from something not English, so that’s fun, but also challenging. Since my partner is going to be reading the same book in simplified Chinese I expect some confusion as we try to discuss and figure out which characters we’re talking about. My book provides transliterated Chinese names as well as Japanese-ified names. For example:
史強（シー・チアン／し・きょう)
葉哲泰（イエ・ジョータイ/よう・てつたい）
Katakana is the transliteration, hiragana is the Japanese-ified. Given my way I’d just remember the Japanese-ified ones because reading 強 as きょう is a lot more intuitive to me than チアン, but since my partner will only know them by their actual Chinese names I unfortunately can’t do that

Reasonable start.
I read about 7 pages of Spy Family and nearly 3 pages of Tugumi (quite a heavy couple of pages).
5 book clubs to keep up with at the moment so I’ll have to pace myself!

I so wish I could do this! However, between work and my regular Japanese study, I know it would make me feel overwhelmed. I look forward to joining you again next summer when I will once again do a self-created intensive study program. In the meantime, I will keep plodding through よつばと whenever I can find the time… Good luck everyone!

My understanding is you don’t actually have to read every day - you set your own challenge! So I think you could still join and post when you can.

I think I’ll join. I skipped summer since I knew I’d be swamped, but I bought a years subscription to satori on a whim and want to get thru most of the content before it clomes up for renewal in spring. Even though I have plenty to read, I also bought the first two manga arcs and first ten light novels for 本好き so I’d better up my reading time or I’ll never burn through my backlog.

I can’t believe we’ve already reached the final challenge of the year!
Today I read Chapter 7 of Volume 2 of Yoru Cafe. As usual, it took me AGES. I always feel immensely pleased with myself when I get to the end of a chapter though

Day 1, 1st of October 
Today I continued where I left of in DrDru’s stories. This one was about The Hobbit, and this one was about Kim & Chuck in the forset, where Kim fights a wolf (not sure if it was a reference to something). Very fun! But I’m still bad at Katakana, so it was a bit exhausting.
Interesting Kanji: the 赤 in 赤ちゃん (baby). On it’s own it apparently means red, so to me babies are now little red riding hoods, because the story where I learned that Kanji had a wolf in it…

Read this week’s portion of 耳をすませば. Since I write about it in the book club, not sure what to add here. But nice to start this challenge on the weekend, a time when I’m most likely able to read.

Well not a bad start managed to read an hour of Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, found it really hard going so many words & kanji I’ve not seen before. Think I’ll be going back to Detective Conan for tomorrows reading much easier!

Chanchilla’s Fall 2022 Reading Challenge!
First time joining a reading every day challenge!
I’ve been keeping up with the Hunter X Hunter ABBC 
. So finishing this book is the main initial goal. Although, I have a new overarching goal to start a daily reading habit (I’ve been cramming the whole week of book club reading into one day so far). I’m starting with a simple goal to read at least 1 page of manga a day (very easy I know, but I find habits form easier if I make the task quick to complete). Then, over time I’ll increase the pages read / time spent reading daily.
I also have some physical copies of other manga I plan to read at some point soon, possibly during this challenge. These include:
- レンタルおにいちゃん
- ふらいんぐうぃっち
- ARIA
I have also been following Game Gengo’s videos and I have been trying to play some video games entirely in Japanese. I am planning to play Pokemon Violet in Japanese when it releases November 18th, which is honestly perfect timing for the end of the Hunter X Hunter book club. The new Pokemon games have been adding furigana over kanji which is awesome for reading.

Starting Point
ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石 (pg 358 of 461)
My focus will be No Zero Days, rather than a minimum page number. I aim to build a consistent habit of casually opening my book to enjoy a couple pages when I can, rather than only doing so when I am sure I can commit a solid block of undisturbed free time to reading 30 pages. On my sunny window seat in the morning before work, over lunch at my desk, and snuggled into bed at night with a hot cup of tea. I will make time when I have time, and I will get used to focusing even in distracting environments.
