Quartet Casual Study Group

Hello Quartet friends, posting in here for some accountability!

I just realized in about 2 months it’ll have been a year since I started Quartet 1 :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:
New goal: finish before July 18th, 2025! :person_running:

All I need to do for chapter 4 is the reading and listening, since I’m skipping the essay for now, so that should be easy to check off this weekend. :white_check_mark:

How is everyone else doing? And psst, @shitsurei in this thread you can make a home post and follow along with everyone if you want!

This is awesome soggy! July is coming up quick, but I’m sure you can make it! I admittedly have fallen off hard after talking big on how I was going to get off on the right foot. That said, I’ve set aside some time next week to hopefully get back on top of things! Mostly just posting this for accountability + self-shame hahaha

You can do it!! I find that sometimes just posting on the forums that I mean to do something is enough to spark that motivation. All you gotta do is open the book and do the work that’s in front of you!

Ha ha, it sounds so easy when you say it, Soggyさん…

I still haven’t taken the plastic off my complete set of Quartet! :face_holding_back_tears:
But I plan to!

I’ve been trying to pick away at it a little bit each day to get in the habit, but I am reminded how much I hate textbooks. I definitely decided to go with Quartet because it works the skills I don’t want to work on, but then I never want to do any of those exercises, so… :upside_down_face:

You also reminded me that I got my corrections back from lang connect, so I should put together a home thread for myself. Or… I could just go read manga..

[puts on my mindfulness hat] :face_with_monocle: We live in the present, not the future, so really all you need to do is make a decision about how you’re spending this current moment. If you in the current moment want to take the plastic wrap off the Quartet book, then that’s all you need to do!

Had to pause my studies for a bit due to other things having a higher priority, but I’m trying to get back into it. I found the readings in lesson 2 a bit of a bore tbh, I guess I’m just too far removed from university to find such topics interesting (the readings for lesson 1 were a bit more interesting in my opinion).

I had the same problem throughout both books. This series focuses a lot on topics relevant to exchange students in Japan, and those are the topics that are least relevant to me and to the things I want to do with Japanese (read fantasy manga, mostly).

Agreed that the readings are a bit dull. They’re also, if you’ve been reading any native Japanese novels, not that hard. I still like doing the before and after reading questions, and it’s useful to take a look at the grammar being used in context, so there’s that

I just finished Genki volume 1 and 2 but don’t have a lot of their vocab drilled as well as the kanji required for Quartet yet I think, but I have the books and I’m ready as soon as I finish up workbooks for Genki volumes 1 & 2 and get more vocab and kanji!

I’ve finished doing the first reading for chapter 4 and answering the questions! I’ll edit all my writings into this post. Buuut, now I’m too tired of textbook-ing to do the second reading today. I’ve also started to continue on to Chapter 5 with Andy’s videos.

Almost 2 months after starting and I finished the first chapter!! :sob:

Definitely not what I had planned but I think that getting past the first chapter is the biggest hurdle as now I know what to expect! (or at least I hope). Unfortunately going on vacation the rest of the week and can’t bring my books, but hopefully I can keep with the routine!

Don’t sweat it. The chapter are IMO much bigger than Genki’s and if you wanna do everything it takes a while. I also don’t always have the motivation for everything, e.g. the writing. As long as you continue to make progress it’s all good.

Yayyy, go go go!

Agreed. The grammar sections have like 9-10 points per chapter, and Genki had like 4. The reading sections for Quartet are also more in depth with the before and after questions. Then if you’re doing the essays that’s easily a couple more hours of work.

:turtle: Pace:

This will be a long project, I find grammar hard and hard to stick. Also my hobbies rotates so I might disappear for some weeks/months :face_in_clouds:

Preamble

Hoooo boy we’re starting this now… I’ve been slightly dreading it but also looking forward to it, as I literally bought my quartet books almost a year ago, but college was making me take forever to finish Genki II. But I finally did that this week, and after taking a break to read instead for two days, I’m starting…

I mostly am doing this to have a structured way of learning grammar, as I feel doing the drills and reading exercises from Genki helped me to make the foundational knowledge for my grammar, so that when I read I’m not spending too much time lost on grammar. By doing this first, and then reading, I can solidify my grammar and get better overall. It’s also one of the few ways I can practice output, especially writing, because I mostly focus on input (which isn’t bad necessarily!).

Goals

I really want to be able to get more comfortable with reading and listening, because there’s so much media and games that I’m missing out on by not being more comfortable with it. Part of that is just reading more, but the other part is me frustratedly looking up grammar I don’t know, or grammar that I keep seeing but can’t remember. So hopefully Quartet can help me remedy that. I do plan to study abroad in Japan around my Junior year or so, I need to start putting the gas on so I can look cool when I get there in a few years. By doing the book and workbook writing exercises I can practice my output and not look like a toddler if I have to write something there

If I do study abroad, I might do a JLPT test after that, so I also need to lock in on this so I can start making my way up.

Pace and plan?

I haven’t made a solid plan, because I know I’ll adjust depending on how I feel as I go through, but I want to try to do a chapter in 2 weeks. I just feel like a month per chapter is too slow for me to wait, especially while I’m on summer break and still have free time. I don’t wanna take a year to get through Quartet I and II! We’ll see if I actually stick with this lol, might go faster or slower depending on the day.

According to Quartet’s Website, a chapter is about 16 hours long (classroom time, so self-study is probably quicker). This means I should be doing a little over an hour of studying per day in this 2 week time period. A potential 2 week plan would look like this (a number is a Day):

  1. Do reading 1 and answer the questions, if not out of time do workbook reading section 1
  2. Do reading 2 and answer the questions, if not out of time do workbook reading section 2
  3. Review 1st half of the grammar alongside TokiniAndy video
  4. Do 1st half of the workbook grammar
  5. Review 2nd half of the grammar alongside TokiniAndy video
  6. Do 2nd half of the workbook grammar
  7. Do the writing essay assignment
  8. Do 1st half of the speaking assignments (with who? We’ll find out…)
  9. Do 2nd half of the speaking assignments (maybe with Discord randos? Talk to myself?)
  10. Listening section looks short, so maybe one day for that?
  11. Do Brush-up section (looks short tbh, it’s more reviewing in Eng than anything)
  12. Do both kanji challenges in one day (kanji is not really a challenge since I’ve studied under the almighty crabigator! :flexed_biceps: :face_with_steam_from_nose: :crabigator: I suck at writing them tho
  13. Profit! :money_bag:

Not a specific day, but I’ll make Anki cards out of the vocab I don’t know, and review those daily. Hopefully I saved enough time for myself to still do a quick Anki review of my mining deck and do some reading.

I will post my writings and answers to the old quartet thread, and use Langcorrect to get feedback on them!
