Quartet Casual Study Group

Completed the first reading assignment and responses here

Making a Langcorrect account as we speak? type

Me when I realize people are gonna have to read my shitty essays

Edit: I realize I’m gonna have to do so many English corrections for people on Langcorrect in these next 6 months, especially since I’ll be writing essays. Not that giving back to the community is bad but hoooo :scream:

Second reading assignment and responses are done, will start grammar tomorrow!

You’re on a roll, go go go!

ooh, love the home posts @pandoravakarian and @NovaStar !!

Lies. :joy:

I’ve started working with a new teacher and we’re going to go through Quartet in part of lessons starting next month. She wants me to do all of the parts that are fun to do on my own and “submit” them as “homework” that she’ll correct for me (yay, no Langcorrect!! :joy::sweat_smile:), and then we’ll work the parts that she thinks are important that I don’t want to do on my own into lessons.

So hopefully I’ll be back on the Quartet train this month to get ready to do lessons with it next month.

Giving myself a small pat on the back as I managed to finally make a comeback from my grammar rut and I was on a super hot streak for ~2 weeks there. Had to take a few days off quartet for work and life things, but safe to say I am ~finally~ back on the grammar horse  (knocks on all the wood)

So cool to see more people joining and making progress. Keep it up everyone!!

Change of plans! I watched the part 1 TokiniAndy Quartet video, but I didn’t want to lose the info I gained, so I did the grammar part 1 workbook exercises today. I’ll continue with this format (video day 1, workbook day 2) for the rest of the book.

Most of the exercises I could guess what the answer should be and copied it or swapped out some nouns, but for the more creative answers, I’m going to have them checked by Langcorrect.

I almost missed this on the ch 1 thread so I’m cross posting here, super fun Quartet Study group sessions to practice output:

So thanks to that I’m back into Quartet and met local legends Shannonさん and Soggyboyさん today!

For anyone else like me who is hopeless with discord

first make an account or log in, then click on the link above.

The group that gets you into is called 日本の神々 and the icon has a person from the back (in water?) with something like the Japanese flag in the background. I’m mentioning that because I’m rubbish at navigating in discord and since I forgot why I joined all the other groups in my account it took me a while to figure out which one was new

OK, now you’re in the group, you need to activate your account. Click the tick j box and OK on the group rules after you read them. Then find a hashtag channel that looks official (I think the only one available at that point) and scroll to the top where you can choose your"role". You do that by selecting one of the emoji for a jlpt level. Then you’re in! Now you see all sorts of confusing things.

Don’t panic, find Study Text 勉強チャット and say hello there. The voice chat is on Study Corner VC.

Me and soggy and Shannon have roughly the same user names, so you’ll recognise someone.

Sundays at 9am CST (?), 4 PM central EU time. Does anyone know how to use the cool widget that shows people the local time?

The call is 1 hr, and maybe a bonus extra if people have time / want to chat a bit after. Next time we’ll start from p 26. We just practice the dialogue suggestions and make it up as we go. Fun!

It’s the little calendar in the task bar!

Next meeting:

2025-06-22T14:00:00Z

P.S. Now I’m thinking of other fun ways to structure our study hour :joy: Weekly question that we answer at the beginning? Reading out loud the textbook readings and switching off?

Magic thanks!

Nice, I agree, a little planning could go a long way so we don’t have brain space trying to figure out what we’re supposed to be doing

Historically, I’m pretty bad about doing any work or prep between sessions. But hopefully we will have more time for actual discussion on future sessions and less time just figuring things out … now that we have the lay of the land more.

I really enjoyed meeting up with you guys and look forward to next week

What?! Wow!!

Today I finished copying all the grammar example sentences for chapter 5! Now I just need to do the readings and listenings, then I can get to work on Chapter 6. I’ve already started watching Andy’s Chapter 6 videos so I think I’ll be right on track to finish the book by my deadline (except for the writings).

Also, love to see the group active! Go everyone go! :star_struck:

I’m feeling guilty with everyone working so hard here – I’m trying to get back into studying Quartet, but I think I’ve hit a wall in book 2. Not so much because of the change in difficulty, but the content (at least in Ch.7) is a lot less interesting. I still can’t think of anything to write for ch.7, so I’m plunging on with the listening exercises.ファイト!

(Unnatural overuse of) Ch.7 Grammar Points practice in place of the Writing Exercise

最近、僕は第7章の論文のテマを考えつつあると同時に、ワニカニにおける第7章カルテットのコミュニティースレッドが閉まりました。でも、悲しいよりもむしろ嬉しくてしょうがないと思います。なぜかというと、困ったことに、論文を書く際に良いアイデアが思いつきません。カルテット2に辿り着いたにもかかわらず、内容はまさにつまらいんです。留学の話ばかりだからこそ続くやる気がなくなってきました。

Join me in skipping the essay sections :slightly_smiling_face:

Ah late post! Yesterday was a busy day for me, especially since it was father’s day, so I only got some of the grammar workbook exercises done yesterday. I’ve finished the rest today, and will do my best to complete the writing section today also. Sorry that I missed out on the speaking practice guys!

Will edit post once all my work is done today

I have finished my grammar practice and mini-essay. Am tired. Will go play games now.

You do you!

I’m also all for moving swiftly past the boring parts. Read it, engage as much as you feel helpful, but keep moving. That said I’m still in ch 1 after a year so this is theoretical advice I’m trying to convince myself to take this time now that I picked it back up

Been lazy and skipping days, but also doubling up on days. Finished speaking (what I could do alone anyway, missed Sunday group) and listening sections, which means chapter 1 is technically done. Started the godforsaken section B of the workbook, I honestly am regretting getting buying it a little bit, compared to the Genki workbook which I hated less. But output practice, Nova. Remind yourself you’re doing this for a good reason.

Will try to complete ch. 1 of the workbook tomorrow, and then do brush-up and kanji the day after tomorrow, so I can start ch. 2 on Monday, which falls within the 14-day plan per chapter. Gonna read today, I’m trying to speedrun a Satori book cause I cancelled my subscription finally (wasn’t really using it, was finishing a manga for book club I didn’t complete instead).

Are we arranging and confirming discord participation here or there?

Summary

I realised last week in my excitement to join I didn’t add the element of realism that being in the middle of my Sunday afternoon my time, it would be hard to plan my day around it, so I’m planning to join on a more spontaneous basis. I feel a bit bad, though, and realise that’s not really helpful for the group overall. Anyhow, I thought it best to let you know as I need to do some professional studying today and it might be my brain is fried by 4 my time (literally, we’re getting up to 33 C today and my house was built 100+ years ago, ie, not for this century or this heat :sob:). But if I’m able I’ll be there. That all sounds so flaky, sorry I can’t do better for that time slot!

No problem! I said this on the Discord already but my wifi is out so I can’t join today anyways
