読む前に
  1. 私の国の外に行ったことがないので、違い文化を経験したこともありません。しかし、ここにたくさん外国人があるので、ときどき先ほどに移り住んでまだ習慣を慣れない人を会います。
  2. アメリカでは、初めてあいさつ時にいつも握手します。人と人の距離について、他の国より距離を好むと思います。アメリカ人からヨーロッパの国に旅行する時の物語を聞いた、喫茶店で並ぶ人はとても近くに立ちます。アメリカにもっと遠くを好む、四フィート以上と思います。
読んだ後で
  1. 人と人の距離について、日本人はかなり遠くを好むが、中国人はもっと近くに立ちます。ときどき日本語と英語の言葉の持つ意味合いは違います。たとえば、友達と遊ぶ時に「約束」と言うが、英語で “plan” つまり「予定」です。
  2. 「○○へ行こう」と聞く時、私はいつか未来の予定と思いまし。もう時間と日付を決めないが、近々そのところに行きたい意味があります。予定は時間や日付や待ち合わせ場所を含めるから。
  3. 虚心坦懐を保つべきです。誰か自分を何か怒らせることをしても、たぶん怒らせるのは意図的ではないのを思い出すべくです。
読み物２
読む前に
  1. 私は友達を作るのが苦手です。高校のごろに一つ友達もいない。しかし、少しずつ上手になってきた。パーティーに行く時、他人に話せるようになる、そしてそれはとても楽しいことを発見した。
  2. 違い皮膚色友達がすこしいるが、まだ仲良しではないから、外国から来たことを知りません。
読んだ後で
  1. 在日外国人によると日本で友達を作りにくいです。イベントで自由交流を通して、日本人の連絡先を交換しても、連絡してみる時に、日本人から返事がありません。この問題に対して、自治体でいろいろできることがあります。一つ目は外国文化に興味がある日本人を育てるのがほしい。
  2. 友達を作りにくい人からすると、必ずしも国人の友達を作るのが難しさより難しくないと思います。
  3. 少ない外国人がある島国にそのことをしにくいかもしれないが、小学生に外国文化を教えるとか外国に留学生するのが励ますとか役立つかもしれません。
タスク
書く前に

  1. 私は16-17歳ごろ動物シェルターでボランティアしました。

  2. 客さんは合図と指示を従いませんでした。犬小屋を掃除しつつあるとか犬にエサを与えつつある際に、客さんに簡単な願いを頼ませる、うるさいと思ってしょうがない。
    管理人は組織的じゃない、そしてそのために問題が起こる時に、ボランティアを責められました。苛立たしいことに他人の失敗を私は責められました。

  3. 私は頑固な子だったから、いつ管理人に叱られる時、いつも抗いました。また、うるさい人に対応する時、いつも意地悪でした。

  4. 人々は自分に迷惑をかけられば、彼らは迷惑をかけられ返すべきです。

書いてみよう

私の十代の頃に二年間ぐらい動物シェルターでボランティアしました。ボランティアは若者に責任感を教えられて、動物一緒に働くことが楽しいが、一つ大きくて大変な問題がありました。

それは、人間に対応する際でした。客さんと管理者とも面倒を起こしました。客さんは警告と指示に従いませんでした。たとえば、「立ち入り禁止」という看板を無視して犬小屋に入りました。私は犬小屋を掃除するとか犬にエサを与える途中に、客さんに簡単な願いを頼まれる、迷惑だと思ってしょうがない。私の役割は客さんとのやり取りではないのに、客さんの願いを扱わせられました。管理は組織的じゃなかった、そしてそのために問題が起こると、ボランティア達が責められました。たとえば、一人管理者はボランティアたちに「犬をブラシをかく時に、そのブラシをその犬の文書に残しておいて。そうすると、他のボランティアたちは新しいブラシを使う代わりにそのブラシを使える。」と言いました。そのことをし始めるが、他の管理者はそれ見ると、怒ってボランティアに怒鳴りました。管理者たちは一緒に話さず、混乱が生じました。

このことについて、管理者たちに相談しましたが、説明責任を取りません。苛立たしいことに他人の失敗を私は責められました。ヴォランティア人がいなければシェルターが働けないのにもかかわらず、管理者たちは失礼でした。私は頑固な子だったので、いつ管理者に叱られると、いつも反論しました。また、迷惑な人に対応すると、いつも意地悪でした。

他人に自分は迷惑をかけると、同じように迷惑をかけられ返すべきです。その経験からそのことを学びました。

As for the chapter 7 questions: remember the ことがある grammar point? In one of my answers I used こともある, and iirc I read somewhere that you can do that, it might have been Genki…? Or maybe Tae Kim.

Tried to blind-listen the first text! (before even looking at 読む前に or anything else)
Well… How to put it… A lot of room for improvement for my listening skills :grin: first of all it was hard to stay focused for 05:23 minutes, that felt pretty long. And I wouldn’t say that I got the gist of it, more like the “theme” of it and some words and expressions here and there.

To be fair, this text seemed quite a bit harder than previous ones. Even from reading it, I still missed a lot of details.

Yeah I feel less bad now that I tried to read it!
Already in the first sentence, I have no idea what the part in bold means:
楽しことと辛いことがたくさん詰まった、人生一濃い力か月間は、僕の人生の選択肢と可能性を大きく広げてくれました

Edit: Oops, thanks to the audio I realized it’s 九 and not 力, that helps!

Dang I feel like we need a vocab list for the grammar portion too… I was completely befuddled by the お目にかかる and 以下の通り in the 際 point, I ended up having to look them up on jisho. (In case anyone needs to know: お目にかかる is to meet with someone and 以下の通り is as below/as follows)

Word. I’m back from my trip and ready to get going with this and then ran right into this sentence. I also mixed up the kanji.

The rest of the text wasn’t that bad. I think I got the gist of it during the first reading, but since all the new grammar points are actually completely new to me this time, I think there’s stuff I’ll only fully understand after reading the grammar section.

Just…there’s another meaning for ばかり? How many are there? How am I supposed to keep all of them apart? Will this never end :sob:? Will ばかり become the new よう :face_holding_back_tears:?

Does anyone know what the tiny text at the end of Yomimono 1 means?

Oh wow I totally missed it when I read the text. I think it looks like edition - name - title - title of chapter or something, maybe it’s an extract from a real book?
Looked up 星の王子・王女たちの留学物語２ and my theory is confirmed, seems to come from this book

Thanks. I kinda suspected something like this, but was too lazy to google it and the title is so weird it threw me. I was like…what do princes of the stars and queens have to do with all this culture shock stuff?

Yeah but the 物語 gave me the biggest hint. Tales of princes and princesses studying abroad, sounds actually interesting!

Not puzzled, it just seemed a little bit like the writers were mocking us/laughing at our troubles, so the emoticon is my slightly miffed reaction :sweat_smile:

Definitely felt that these texts are a step up from quartet 1. First reading was hard for me, second reading was a bit easier(and kinda funny? Felt like the writer was throwing a lil shade at some parts). Learning about cultural aspect stuff is pretty interesting though, since I did a ton of listening practice in the month break we had and a lot of the videos I watched were related to it.

Nice that the theme fit! I think the fact that the first text is from a book explains that it’s harder, in any case it’s nice that we are trained on real native material and not just made-for-the-book texts.
I’m curious, can you share some of the videos?
