I like that strategy too, and as a bonus it gives time to come across it in other reading
Ok, it’s been a while!
But it doesn’t matter how long a break is, just that you hop back in the saddle! ![]()
I noticed as I was flipping through the chapter 3 grammar section that I see a good amount of these (half or more) constantly when I’m reading. It made me think, so how many useful grammar points am I missing from the later chapters when I read stuff and just sort of skim over the finer grammatical details?
That inspired me to get back to my study!
Looking over chapter 3, I did notice that I have not retained a couple of the points, like 「とは限らない」。 I see versions of 限り constantly when I’m reading, but am never quite sure about the meaning in context. That may be one to also check out in the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar.
Today I think I’ll finish copying out the example sentences for the chapter 3 grammar section, since I only have one point left, and then skim through the grammar portion again and do the readings. I will report back on whether my mission is successful! ![]()
Did the writing for chapter 3
(shorter than supposed to be though).
I’m still unsure about including the speaking in my schedule cause I’m sort of just talking to myself and I’m not much of a conversationalist so it goes about 2 sentences before my mind goes blank lmao
Go soggy go! ![]()

All done with the readings! I even answered all the reading questions.
Posted them in the other group here.
I may still do the listening section today since I remember it being pretty short in the last 2 chapters.
Finished chapter 3! Listening went better than previously, got all correct except one though I was listening on 0.7 speed cause it was going too fast for me
Hey everyone, I was opening a bunch of books this weekend that I haven’t touched in a while and looked into Quartet. I think I’ll get back into it, but in a much softer way. My home post with all the check boxes would be really great if I was super diligent and this was my focus. Instead, I think dipping in, learning something, and then seeing how that turns up in my reading/ listening over the next week will be a more motivating strategy for me. So I just put in some bookmarks where I am with the various sections, and I’ll follow those through the book.
I still haven’t taken the plastic off my set of Quartet
blush
That sounds great! This is the casual study group after all ![]()
I’m stuck on the writing assignment for chapter 3. I think it’s because I can’t decide what place to write about.
You’re just taking the time to truly savour how beautiful it looks in the plastic ![]()
I will get back to it once I’m free from my shackles (soon) (Hopefully soon)

School, right? Hope to see you around when that calms down!

Pace/Goals/Intro:
What’s up! And welcome to my home post. Soggy introduced me to this thread after they saw I’d be reading Quartet when I posted my new study log (check it), and even though I’m joining the fray a good deal after you all, I’m excited to take part. (also sorry I stole ur whole home thread formatting soggy). It took me just a little under a year to finish Genki 1+2, but I had many abundant breaks and I’d really like to keep a more steady pace with this one. If I assume each “Checkbox” is one day of study, that’s a total of 96 study days. A little under 14 weeks, or 26.3% of a year. So If my goal is to complete Quartet 1 and 2 by March 19, 2026 (it is), that means I need to do one activity every 3.8 days. That feels like a pretty reasonable goal for me, but we’ll see if I can stick to it! I’m going to start off trying to complete at least one every 2 days and then go from there!! Excited to be doing this with you guys ![]()
What Icaraba has said hits close to home:
my ambition > my willpower
Welcome to the study group @jablekanji !!
As for my progress, I decided recently to skip the writing sections for now and come back to them later if I feel like it. In the last couple weeks, I’ve slowly watched Andy’s two chapter 4 videos, so next I’ll read through the grammar pages and possibly copy out some of the example sentences. I felt like the grammar introduced mostly felt pretty familiar from my reading, although I feel like I need to mentally distinguish all the uses of ばかり a little better.
CatDQ’s Quartet home post
Decided since I was struggling so much to stay on track with textbook study alone, I would join in on here and try to keep myself more accountable. At least, that’s the plan ![]()
I will try to do at least one thing from the list each week, more if possible;
For textbook work, plan is to glance over the grammar first, then work through it in line with the suggested process and finally, review it again at the end of the chapter.

Expectation is to be able to complete this in just over a year at apace of 1 part per week (each chapter taking just over a month). Workbook study will be secondary, so the focus is on the textbook.
Yayy, welcome!
The books have been lying around here for years now, but I finally feel ready to start.

Welcome to the group!
yay welcome! it’s nice to have more people joining
Since my last update, I reread the grammar point comparison on らしい そうだ ようだ (at the end of the book in the brush up section) and it made me realise, I definitely get these when I read, but I have probably never once spoken them aloud in my conversation practice. So - renewed motivation to do at least a smidgeon of prep for my conversation practice and have something to say about something I heard.
“da da da そうだ”
I found that section very interesting. I kind of knew roughly what they meant but wasn’t aware of the nuances. I doubt I’d get it always right when speaking but it’s good to know.
I’ve finally completed the grammar section of lesson 1. Took me some days because there’s also a lot of workbook practice associated with it - which I definitely think is valuable for reinforcing things. There was even a small writing prompt in there. Now I’m a bit scared of the bigger writing prompt in the writing section. I guess I need to find somebody I respect and research them a bit lol.
I’m btw not studying any vocab or Kanji explicitly, I’ve seen most of these before and the ones I’m a bit shaky on I trust to just pick up more naturally. I’ve went through too many Anki decks already to justify adding yet more cards lol.
Completed my writing assignment for lesson 1: 4️⃣ Quartet 1 - Chapter 1 (Quartet Study Group) - #137 by Fryie
That took quite some time. And I’ll probably forget all the vocab I looked up. But I guess it was still a good exercise.
