I started this random kid’s book yesterday thinking it was just some random school romance, but actually it’s a school romance about a 転校生 who’s also a werewolf who is also (possibly) the girl’s dog and he’s being chased by bad guys who want to take his body apart for science or something.
You know, I often think your approach to learning Japanese is a very grounded one - reading & listening to children’s novels & working your way up. I often think I should do that too but I have shelves of unread manga I also want to work my way through….
It helps that I already enjoy children’s novels in English and read them for fun sometimes (what can I say, I like the whimsy). I know some people don’t reach for children’s novels for language learning because they find them too juvenile or whatever else but I don’t have that problem, so for me it’s like happily frolicking in an endless field of easy content ahaha.
I’m also really just happy to be able to understand any audiobooks, hence listening to this random werewolf book. Perhaps my taste will get more discerning once the shine of ‘woohoo i’m listening to a story in japanese!’ has worn off.
I keep thinking of more things to say on this topic.
I noticed last time I did a listening push that when I was doing a lot of listening to children’s audiobooks there was a really good synergy that built up between my listening material and reading material. It makes sense, because it’s the same kind of writing styles/vocabulary being used, so I would hear things, then read them, read them, then hear them, and so on. It felt like the two areas fed into each other really well, even better than listening to, say, a conversational podcast and then reading novels. So I’m interested to see if I notice that during this challenge as well.
I felt fine yesterday but today my hour of audiobook listening gave me the headache of knowledge I think I’ll need to up my listening hours with some stuff that requires less focus on my days off work. Anyways the 先輩 character was actually working with the evil organization and is a ねこまた, and they tried to do experiments on the werewolf boy but he and our heroine managed to escape and go to the sanctuary which is a secret town where all the fairy tale people live. I think vampires exist in this world too.
Ok went for the ole minecraft youtube while doing something else (drawing) strategy. This doesn’t feel as much like learning as listening to audiobooks, but I can’t listen to an hour of audiobooks every day or I’ll die.
And I’m afraid that’s all I’ve got time for today. Went hiking, then out to dinner & a concert. Managed to squeeze in some WK and reading but not much time left over for anything else.
