@Mods Could you please make the original post a wiki? And could it possibly be stickied in the Japanese Listening category?

Done and done! :ok_hand:

Thank you!! :man_bowing:

And if anyone has any good ideas for organizing the list, feel free to do whatever you like.

I think the recent Bite sized Japanese podcast episodes are N3, not N4, and I think YUYU and American Life are better categorised as N2.

Great list!

I’ll change those! I just gave my best guess for most of them.

I suddenly realized I had nothing convenient to link people when they’re searching for podcasts haha, then searched the forums like surely someone’s made a list… but there was no list! Ah well, another excuse to make a spreadsheet :relieved:

The first Bite size Podcasts are not very good in my opinion - I think she was just getting a feel for what she was doing. In those episodes, she used English a lot and often in places where it was unnecessary- I felt as if she was using it almost as a “wow, I can say this in English so I will”. Personally, I want to listen to Japanese, and so I prefer podcasters to try to first explain difficult terms in simple Japanese rather than immediately resorting to English. Having said that, I love listening to her recent episodes where she speaks almost entirely in Japanese.

Speak Japanese Naturally is a nice and slow one. https://youtube.com/@speakjapanesenaturally?si=mjEgSOUcvVoIIHwa

Nihongo Switch is another nice one, though now only available on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/4eRxgycshgFFcPX9jBsrP2?si=67lCFLH2QOGdWBgpvC0tkg

it pains me how many of these don’t have a public rss feed i can just jam into my podcast catcher

I’ll add these! What JLPT level do you think they are? N4?

Maybe that, but I am not particularly good at giving a rating. Naturally may be up to N3.

The normal Speak Japanese Naturally (which has actual video footage) feels N4 to lower N3 to me.

However it also has a newer podcast-only (no real footage) channel https://youtube.com/@speakjapanesenaturallypodcast?si=ZhbRVoXMAVAhNOjW and that one so far feels like a higher N3 for sure.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

Awesome, hope you enjoy the podcast! I like it too. :grinning:

Hmmm… maybe it needs two different listings?

To clarify, this is a list just for podcasts targeted toward Japanese learners? I wanted to stop myself before adding random Japanese podcasts if that’s the goal

So I already put 4989 American Life on there which is not targeted towards learners, but everything else is. If you all think it would be helpful to put podcasts for native speakers on here as kind of a catch-all list, then we could do that too. If it gets to be too many we could always separate them into two tables; one for learner podcasts and one for native podcasts.

Ah, yeah, the “everything else is” aspect is what made me hesitate. But then we also don’t have a running master list of non-japanese-learning podcasts so I wasn’t sure what the vibe was. I’ll hang onto the more subject-specific native podcasts for now and just add some that I think might be good for a general learner audience

I think that’s a good idea. I thought about this a bit before, and yeah maybe there should be a separate list somewhere for subject-specific native podcasts. My worry with including a bunch of native level content was that then someone would come along like ‘how about those anime voice actor youtube radio things!’ and then like 50 of those would get added to the list and it would skew really wildly in that one direction.
