Today marks the day when I will start counting また、同じ夢を見ていた. It’s the next novel of the writer who wrote I want to eat your pancreas and I saw a lot of positive reviews. I am reading it while listening to the audiobook which is such a big help, since there are no Furigana and waaaay to many Kanji I don’t yet know.
I already read a little the days before but haven’t counted so I might just use page 1 as a starting point today for good measure.

Less reading time today, but managed to power through part 3 of さくらいろ - finished at page 115, 39%! Got very confused by the phrase 目と鼻の先 while I was reading after lunch and had to get a coworker to explain it since I didn’t have computer access to look it up at the time ended up crying by the end of the chapter so that was a fun one

did this week’s ouran reading and tho increased section length to previous weeks definitely started getting to me by the end, it was manageable. i can always do it in two chunks during the week if we get hit with a really rough chapter.

did another two kiwami 2 videos, one of which actually had unvoiced text only sections! so it really counts! yakuza: has serious plot about gang warfare and grudges and guilt. also yakuza: has a late stage boss fight against a pair of tigers in a secret hideout in/under osaka castle. it’s so stupid and i love it so much

today’s nhk article was this one on safety in tornadoes and thunderstorms (it has infographics!), and today’s fate episode was エシオ’s. i have mixed feelings on him as a character, but he was next in the list and it was interesting enough. but hey, 汝(なんじ) turned up again but actually with the なんじ reading! if it turns up again tomorrow i think it’s trying to tell me something

My very first challenge! I wanted to join the fun and fill a spiffy calendar! Maybe this will also reinforce the good idea of reading even a small amount every day rather than binging through volumes at a time and then not touching any books in days…

I’m mostly reading manga and the grammar dictionary for now, but I’m testing myself here and there with some book-books I have at hand as well — mostly book club choices, it seems! I’m also planning to give some textbooks I own an earnest try now that there’s some time over the summer — maybe that’s what I need to cover the gap between 漫画 and 小説.

Day 4! Today I read the 5th story in Natsume Soseki’s Ten Nights of Dreams. These stories are short but it’s really slow going with the old writing having so many words or ways of writing words that aren’t common anymore. However, other than the constant lookups, the sentence construction isn’t too bad. I’ve been talking about it in the dedicated thread here on the forums, but it’s a neat collection of stories. Admittedly some portion of my desire to check out Soseki comes from his appearance as a character in The Great Ace Attorney games –

Those games are such great fun and, given infinite time, yet another thing I’ve thought would be cool to reread with the VN club here. Why must I be slow

I’ll do more reading later, I usually do, but that’s the major project for the day down. On to more Ghost Trick or something.

The word of the day is 鬣 (たてがみ), mane, mostly because that kanji is an unending nightmare of lines. At a small enough font it just becomes a blob.

I got a sickening dose of 撃 kanji Today. There was a space battle in the webnovel I’m reading and clearly there’s a 100 ways of saying “attack”. 出撃 (used 3 times) and 攻撃 (6) are boring, 迎撃 (4; interception) is too niche, 突撃 (14) is the hip kid on the block! Or if you wanna get fancy with words, there’s 撃破 (crush); 撃退 (repel); 撃沈 (to sink a ship). There probably a few more I missed but I’ll certainly remember 突撃 …

On the topic of sick doses. バガボンド baited me. I was waiting for a fight and kept reading, and reading. 150 pages or so and the characters did nothing but stand and look at each other with dialogue in the backdrop. Speaks volumes of an author who can keep a reader’s interest with still images of 2 dudes watching each other sweat without attacking. It was too much I had to bail, surely they’ll move an inch by tomorrow.

Got a nice long reading session today and finished よつばと！３. Still enjoying the serie, feels very authentic, with the dad always in underwear, Yotsuba living her best life as a kid, Asagi always busy out of the house. I enjoy experiencing the slice of life series set in Japan and it’s definitely less boring than I expected. I get a tiny bit creeped out when the grown men hit on the teenage or near-teenage girls but, 仕方がない
Took me around 40min for 3 chapters. On to volume 4!

Very interesting, so there are actually two more books (one novel and one short story collection) called straight 穴. One is horror, the other mystery. Both sound interesting. And then there’s this series, 穴屋でございます, about a shop in the Edo period where you can just go and…order a hole?! I love it! I don’t usually prefer period novels, but I’m seriously tempted to make an exception for this one!

Many of the other ones, I have no idea why they even came up in the search.

Here we go again! Rereading this chapter because it’s been a whole month since then! Alright, I used a lot of Yomichan because there’s a lot of kanji I haven’t learned yet, so it was mostly trying to parse the grammar that made it difficult. I think I got it mostly?

It’s the start of a lore episode. I wonder what kind of creature it was that cursed these people? And why it did that after they killed Alexander (why was he important)? We already saw there were helpful creatures in the other stories. Anyway, I’m 4 pages of ~20 in, I’m sure more information (and questions) will crop up eventually.

Hey there, fellow readers, wanted to use this thread to ask a question. So recently I’ve gotten back into the habit of mining words into Anki, which I do through my internet browser because I have the tools to make that instant. That’s a large part of why I’ve started reading soseki, as https://www.sosekiproject.org/ is very convenient. I’m thinking about what I want to do when I finish Ten Nights of Dreams: I still have VNs (which the texthooker outputs to the browser) but I’m in the mood for normal books some days, and I figured you all might have advice to help me get stuff I can read in my browser.

Are there sources you all know of that allow for direct browser reading? In the past I’ve read Japanese books on a kindle, and I thought their cloud reader website looked promising, but it seems Japanese books aren’t supported. Very annoying. I know Aozora would work, but since those are primarily older books I’m going to move really slowly through them, which I can deal with here and there, but I do want a further solution. In addition, mining from them isn’t always optimal since they’ll give me archaic words/ways of writing words, though I want to be more comfortable with older literature so I’m not opposed to doing that some. My major issue there is that Aozora isn’t the nicest thing to navigate so I’d also be happy to take suggestions for good books that are on there.

I was able to finish the chapter of コンビニ人間 and look up the words I didn’t know, so I was already happy with today. I might end up behind on Ouran though - I am going at my usual pace, but the chapters are longer now. The manga is quite text dense so it’s a bit too much to read more in a go. I also reread the last chapter of ロジカとラッカセイ, because I read it really fast and late at night so I missed some of the more detailed explanations; I’m glad I took it slower today.

Tomorrow, I hope to finish this week’s reading of あん (half a chapter) and perhaps even get a head start into next week, we’ll see.
