Challenge Plan

Plan

My plan for this challenge is to focus on reading, not specifically reading in Japanese. Meaning even if I read books/stories in English or Swedish, I will count it and update (if I want to). And that is partly because the two main things I’m reading in Japanese right now can feel a lot like deciphering or I’m reading material I’ve seen a hundred times (anime). Both of which takes away from the enjoyment of getting lost in the story.

Also, I’ve spent the past six months (aka the previous two challenges) trying to get both Japanese reading and general fiction reading (99% in English) going together and mostly failing at both. While there are only small pockets of Japanese reading that feels like regular reading (aka no to only a few lookups per book/volume), I want to start treating it as regular reading. Eventually it will be. If starting now helps me get a regular reading habit, then I’m going for it.

Maybe it doesn’t work, but I’ll try.

For my yearly goals, I’m 1 manga volume behind, which is basically nothing. For my VN and book (in Japanese) goals, I feel like I’m one book or VN behind, since I’m reading two of each. That will be a bigger hurdle to clear for sure. For my regular (mostly English) reading of 1 book per week, I’m 10 books behind. But I will be counting any books I read in Japanese for it, and will also count the grammar dictionary (if I finish it from front to back), because I’ve always included non-fiction. I’m also not worried about the English reading, considering I finished most of my currently finished 16 books in a 3 week span. So if I get into another binge, I can catch up easily.

Mz/X’s Home Post

First timer in this (and any) reading challenge. Based on my lurking in previous challenge threads I’ll probably be an outlier with my reading habits because I’ve got a weird taste. I’m low on cute/slice-of-life content, and so far most of my reading was 少年 or 青年 stories. I have a soft-spot for weird stuff, but I’m not confident in my level of reading to tackle most of those yet. I also like cringe isekai/power-fantasies and coming-of-age stories. I tend to favor mangas over novels since I’ve discovered I can make the text selectable + I’ll honestly anything that’s pretty. I also have a long history of stockpiling panels & pages from manga and visit subs like R/MangaFrames to look at/share pretty art.

I’ll not miss a day (probably), I got my reading habits down this past month. I might only read a few pages on some days but I’ll fill up this calendar. I also plan to join some book clubs & will update this post afterwards to vary up my reading.

I’ve only finished one manga this year (ザ・ファブル) so far and gave up on a novel (キノの旅) half-way through. But I just finished college with my final exam yesterday so fingers crossed I’ll fare better in the coming months.

I won’t keep a calendar here this time as I now track everything in my visual calendar here.

But I will update here occasionally when I feel I have something interesting to say, and I will try to read everyone else’s updates - they’re always fun to keep up with, as long as I can find the time.

Tomorrow is the official start of the Spooky Summer Club’s first pick: 予言の島.
I also plan to keep up with the あん book club (although I still haven’t actually bought the book, so I may need to catch up later since I’m obstinately waiting to get it when it’s on sale), and of course I’m watching the Mystery Club’s poll with interest. The reading of the winner is scheduled to start July 17th. And then there’s the マリアビートル club, which starts July 29, and which I also plan to join. Busy reading month ahead!

I haven’t really been reading much lately, but I’d like to get back into it! My goal in the next three months is to finish eight books (2 for each month, + 2 to make up for June since I didn’t really read then). I’ll be happy with six books though as long as I think I can still get to 24 books total by the end of the year.

I really like how the emoji calendars look so this time I’m trying it!

and we’re back for another one! thanks again for hosting another thread windupbird! i’ve definitely noticed improvement over the past two challenges and am hoping to keep on that upward trend. looking forward to everyone’s update posts as usual, i’m always mining for new things to read :eyes:

my main goals for this one are:

  • start and finish 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２…this may take the entire challenge, we’ll see…
  • keep up with the ouran reading club
  • if and when i finish 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) 2, start on making a sizeable dent in my physical tbr. or any kind of dent, tbh, it’s getting a little unwieldy
  • do a fate episode in granblue every day until the challenge is over or i run out (whichever comes first)
  • read more nhk news articles/special features (aiming for one every weekday)
  • it’s kind of borderline reading practice, but i’ve been watching videos of the main story of the yakuza games recently (playing finished 0, watching the rest) and all of those have subtitles which i read along to. helpful, cos some of the characters talk like they’ve got a mouth full of gravel and it’s a pain.

This is my second time participating in this and I hopefully plan to participate many more years down the line!

my plans

Last spring I somehow managed to finish 2 light novels which were adaptations of Chinozo vocaloid songs (Goodbye Sengen and Schema) and I plan to continue with them since there’s 2 more novels in the series.

First one is Elite which I read like 60 pages and gave up because I was very busy and lazy too. This time I also plan to take the JLPT test for N2 at the end of the year so I plan to start using Tae Kim book I bought and some Shin Kanzen books later too. But for now, I’ll just read some song-made-into-light-novels I bought (I also have いのちの食べ方) and kick back and relax. When it’s end of the July, I’ll start studying for JLPT seriously.

I’ll use my former format which I write a sentence or two in Japanese about the progress on the novel I read that day so that might help you get some reading even when you’re scrolling here lol. I also copied some things here from javerend and taiyousea so thank you.
