Did that and two puzzle rooms in between. Had a lot of fun but wowee Iโ€™m spent. Iโ€™m also either dumb, tired or didnโ€™t understand the language of what I was supposed to do with a certain puzzle (for those caught up with week 9: the ones with the ON/OFF switches that light up) but I got past that, somehow. In one of the puzzles I spent like 20 minutes looking for something that I had in my inventory all alongโ€ฆ xd. Was about to quit and just try tomorrow, and of course then I noticed :joy: . Annoying, but was fun.

Nah, that puzzle is just miserable and poorly explained. Iโ€™ve played 999 a good half dozen times and it STILL trips me up every time.

I havenโ€™t tried much, but perhaps also things like syosetu.com.

I would want to avoid learning too many vocabularies per day, or too hard materials, however. In a sense, many vocabularies donโ€™t need to try to remember, as some are just guessable, particularly with context; or remembering would probably eventually come with time.

About historical works, itโ€™s also that there is historical Kanji usage; and makes me consider Kana/audio remembering and No-Furigana remembering separately. Maybe vocabularies can be mined, just also needs to be normalized to more common Kanji.

This reminds me of one of my favorite pro wrestling matches. This was from March 29, 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic, when pro wrestling shows in Japan werenโ€™t able to have crowds, so they held shows in an empty arena. In this Pro Wrestling NOAH match, Go Shiozaki is defending the GHC Heavyweight Championship against Kazuyuki Fujita.

Itโ€™s probably the most avant garde wrestling match Iโ€™ve ever seen, which is, uh, really saying something . This is a match that literally was only possible in a show without a crowd, because a crowd would never have tolerated this, haha. If anyone tries to watch it, some important context is that itโ€™s a title match, so thereโ€™s a 60 minute time limit by default (and if it ends in a draw, the champion retains his title). Thereโ€™s also no Japanese commentary, so thereโ€™s not terribly much Japanese practice here. Donโ€™t read the title of the video if you want to go into it unspoiled.

Spoiler for the twist: the match starts with a literal 30 minute staredown between the wrestlers. As you can imagine, itโ€™s a pretty polarizing creative choice, haha, and some fans hated it and others loved it. It made me a big fan of Go Shiozaki, personally, so thatโ€™s where I fall on that scale .

Summary post

Day 4: July 4th
What did I read?: ๅฎ็Ÿณๅ•†ใƒชใƒใƒฃใƒผใƒ‰ๆฐใฎ่ฌŽ้‘‘ๅฎš light novel
How much did I read?: 2.5 pages
How long did it take me?: 54 min

How did it take me an hour to read 2 pages :sob: Am I that rusty  The lack of furigana was killing me a bit, but somehow it is endearing me already. I like how our narrator Seigi describes Richardโ€™s ๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž as fluent/smooth when heโ€™s literally said one word so far  Like guys, I canโ€™t speak Japanese but I can say one word fluently, come on now, did we just ๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชžไธŠๆ‰‹ him because heโ€™s the most beautiful human in the universe that is not me editorializing, Seigi calls him the most beautiful human heโ€™s ever seen on multiple occasions, with eyes that you could look into forever, quote unquote. Adorable

That is the absolute weirdest thing I have ever read, thank you for that synopsis :joy: With the ending I think I can kind of see where the โ€œhorrorโ€ label comes from but itโ€™s all a bit too absurd to actually be scary xD

  • ใƒใƒƒใƒ†ใƒชใƒผ ch 34
  • 18 pages of ใ‚ใฎ็ฉบใฏใ‚ญใƒŸใฎไธญ, finishing ch 8 and leaving off on pg 184. Ah, maybe it was โ€œโ—‹โ—‹ๅ›ž่ฃใฎๆ”ปๆ’ƒใฏโ€ that I heard in oofuri and Iโ€™m just misremembering, since I saw that phrase in here today.
  • 106 pages of ใ•ใ„ใจใ†ๅธ‚็ซ‹ใ•ใ„ใจใ†้ซ˜ๆ ก้‡Ž็ƒ้ƒจ (ไธŠ), reading ch 1-4 and leaving off on pg 116. We went to visit family nearby and I wanted to bring a smaller (page size rather than thickness, though this is both) book than ใ‚ใฎ็ฉบใฏใ‚ญใƒŸใฎไธญ, so obviously that meant I had to start another new one, right? (sighโ€ฆ) In any case, I think the prose in this one is actually easier than in ้€ใ้€šใฃใŸ้ขจใŒๅนใ„ใฆ, since I doubt Iโ€™ve gotten that used to ใ‚ใ•ใฎใ‚ใคใ“โ€™s writing after just one novella, but this oneโ€™s not too difficult. Thereโ€™s also no ๅฒกๅฑฑๅผ (though I feel like Iโ€™m p much used to it from Battery by now). I greatly suspect our MC may be ADHD though. I canโ€™t remember when exactly I got this book, but Iโ€™m kinda glad Iโ€™m not trying to read this early on in my foray into reading in Japanese lol he gets off topic a lot in his narration and Iโ€™m sure I would have gotten very lost (heck, I do a bit now).
Before each chapter title is a single line introducing it, and itโ€™s the same every time but for the ending, and itโ€™s funny how it advances: (1) ใ•ใ„ใจใ†ๅธ‚็ซ‹ใ•ใ„ใจใ†้ซ˜ๆ ก้‡Ž็ƒ้ƒจใซใคใ„ใฆใ€ใŠใ‚Œใฏ่ชžใ‚‹ใ€‚(2) [โ€ฆ] ใŠใ‚Œใฏใ•ใ‚‰ใซ่ชžใ‚‹ใ€‚(3) [โ€ฆ] ใŠใ‚Œใฏใ•ใ‚‰ใซใ•ใ‚‰ใซ่ชžใ‚‹ใ€‚(4) [โ€ฆ] ใŠใ‚Œใฏใพใ ่ชžใ‚‹ใ€‚(5) [โ€ฆ] ใŠใ‚Œใฏใ—ใคใ“ใ่ชžใ‚‹ใ€‚(6) [โ€ฆ] ใŠใ‚Œใฎ่ฉฑใฏใฉใ‚“ใฉใ‚“็ถšใ„ใฆใ„ใใ€‚(7) [โ€ฆ] ใŠใ‚Œใฎ่ฉฑใฏใฉใ‚“ใฉใ‚“ใฉใ‚“ใฉใ‚“็ถšใ„ใฆใ„ใใ€‚ On the one hand, Iโ€™m glad it doesnโ€™t just keep adding on ใ•ใ‚‰ใซs, but on the other hand, that would also be hilarious. my cousinsโ€™ dog Ruby

Sheโ€™s extremely friendly, loves people, and especially loves pets and belly rubs. I mostly stayed inside and read or did WK reviews on the couch (I did sit on the porch for a bit when we first arrived, until I started getting chewed up by skeeters) where it was cool, quiet, and bug-less. A while after lunch (and it was a late lunch; if Iโ€™d known we werenโ€™t gonna eat until two, Iโ€™da had something before we left! I was so hungry I felt like I was gonna die. Iโ€™m surprised I got as much reading done as I didโ€ฆ I mean, just in general, but also because of how hungry I was for much of the day) she came back inside and curled up on the couch, then after I moved my bag out of the way, she stretched out along the back of the couch next to me and shoved her hind feet in my lap to demand pets lol. Iโ€™m p sure it was more than an hour that I pet her for. I didnโ€™t mind though; I love dogs, and I could still hold my book in my other hand and read. Iโ€™m very glad I brought ใ•ใ„ใจใ†้ซ˜ๆ ก้‡Ž็ƒ้ƒจ, as ใ‚ใฎ็ฉบใฏใ‚ญใƒŸใฎไธญ is more unwieldy and woulda been more difficult to read one-handed.

They also have another dog, Raven, whoโ€™s apparently very friendly tooโ€ฆ when sheโ€™s not busy being shy. I didnโ€™t see much of her, and I didnโ€™t get any pictures either.

:cherry_blossom: Ouran High School Host Club by ่‘‰้ณฅ ใƒ“ใ‚นใ‚ณ : 5ish pages

:white_flower: A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar : 3 entries

I read nothing on July 3rd, dashing early my hope of a perfect month, maybe just as well. Streaks can be helpful, but sometimes they can just become this pressure to do something even if it doesnโ€™t feel meaningful to me. I was gonna read in bed, but when it was time to do that I was tired enough that I decided my body probably wanted the extra 40 mins of sleep. And I was right.

On the fourth (aka yesterday), I read 3 entries in the grammar dictionary. Iโ€™m pretty far behind, reading K when the club is finishing up M this week (no Ls though, so around 3-4 weeks behind).

Then a bit late at night I finally got to Ouran, which Iโ€™m also behind on. (Youโ€™ll notice this is a theme with me, maybe I can get caught up and stay on top my book clubs this month? I can hope.) I meant to read a whole weekโ€™s worth, but maybe because I was tired, I ran out of steam before then.

I really shouldnโ€™t be surprised that Ouran is as hard as it is. On Natively it is level 27. While the usual Natively levels I read on are: 17, 20, 21, 23 (x2), 24. I hadnโ€™t looked at this before and yeah, I guess I really shouldnโ€™t be surprised, and ใ‚ณใƒณใƒ“ใƒ‹ไบบ้–“ is 29. So Iโ€™ve set myself up with two much higher reads than I usually tackle.

No wonder I find myself hesitant to read.

@iterimpius You are most welcome.

Real late post tonight, so Iโ€™ll be quick. Iโ€™m continuing to read through volume 3 of the natural version of Crystal Hunters. I am becoming more and more comfortable with the verb tenses that you would typically see in a manga. I hope this ends up proving beneficial when I begin Horimiya in a month and a half.

I tried reading a little bit of Happiness yesterday (wanted to try some native material), but this is like my fifth time restarting it. The manga just cannot seem to hold my attention. I know itโ€™s one of the easier reads, but I may switch it up and try to read Mitsuboshi Colors instead.

What did I just read?

Second story in the ็ฉดใ‚‰ใ—ใใ‚‚ใฎใซๅ…ฅใ‚‹ collection. It is called ้‡‘้ชจ.

This one could actually be horror if it was written differently, and I could see a movie directed a certain way that would make for good, if weird, horror. But what it mainly was, was a slapstick comedy. :eyes:

The beginning is solemn enough: A son is waiting in the car for his fatherโ€™s cremation to finish, so he can collect the bones. But as you may guess from the title, a surprise awaits him (and all gathered mourners): the bones turn out to be pure gold.

Full story summary for the curious (spoilers of course):

People see the gold and start going crazy with greed. First the wife and then the daughter try to hug the bones (unclear whether itโ€™s from greed or love or whatever) and of course they get burns from the hot metal. A relative hastily orders for a bucket of water. I foolishly thought it was to ease the pain from the burn, but no, he wants to cool the bones in the water so they can be picked up. Relatives are mumbling greedily about gold left and right. The two women are carried off to hospital to treat their burns, and the crematorium staff soon ushers the family out to a different room because there are other cremations waiting.

So, the father was an avid golfer, and knowing almost nothing about golf myself, it took me way too long to understand why the son was called ไธƒ้‰„. But the super-obvious names donโ€™t stop there: The deceased gold-boned father was called ้‡‘้€ , and, wait for it, his younger brothers are called ้Š€้€  and ้Š…้€  respectively.

Arriving in the hall where the family is gathered now, with the golden skeleton laid out on a table, the son realizes everyoneโ€™s faces are contorted (with greed?). Outrageous shenanigans take place, with full body cavity searches to find stolen gold, ordered x-ray scanners, even the tying down and attempted limb-tearing of the second brother, who they suddenly realize must have silver bones. The crazed crowd uses material they happen to have on hand, like duct tape, a paper cutter, a paper bag, nylon rope, etc. Because who goes to funeral without these items. They even arrange a lottery in an urn for who gets to pick a bone first.

In the end no one is killed, and when the wife and daughter return from hospital with a bento for everyone people seem to come to their senses. They eat heartily around the golden bones and discuss the deceased and the golf he so liked. After the meal, the silver-boned brother excuses himself, takes all the bones he can fit in his bag and trousers, and leaves. No one reacts, and afterwards the widow explains he was owed money by her dead husband. One by one, all other relatives more or less said the same and left with their share of gold. Some bones remained for the immediate family to place in an urn and they too left. What will we do with the bones, the son asks his mother. ใ•ใ‚ใ€‚

Jump to one month later, the son has invited a girl from the family for golf. His golf club is pure gold. The end.

Slow day, just read a few pages in ใพใŸใ€ๅŒใ˜ๅคขใ‚’่ฆ‹ใฆใ„ใŸ. I really like the story, but I also notice that I should be investing some time into grammar practice again. Normally I understand most, but sometimes there just comes up a confusing sentence where I canโ€™t quite tell if itโ€™s one thing or actually another.
But grammar studying is so much harder then just reading lol. Gonna try and throw out those excuses by tomorrow.

Day 5! Today was story 6 in 10 Nights of Dreams. Again, thereโ€™s a club thread for my detailed thoughts (these stories are short and free so if anyone would like to join and chat about it you should :slightly_smiling_face:), but this one was a little odd to me in the context of the collection. Feels a little out of place compared to others, but it also draws a decent bit on historical Japanese figures and the like so I wonder how much Iโ€™m missing a richer experience. It was fun to interpret, anyway. The actual reading was a bit rough and slow from tricky description, but Iโ€™m also short on sleep today. Hereโ€™s hoping I get the energy for Ghost Trick later.

As for new words, ไธ‹้ฆฌ่ฉ• (ใ’ใฐใฒใ‚‡ใ†๏ผ‰is cool. It can relate to rumors from unrelated people but here itโ€™s more like evaluation/comments from those who donโ€™t have the connection/experience for that to be meaningful.

putting it here, but i actually carried on with yakuza videos yesterday and basically finished the main plot :grimacing: whoops. kaoru really had the worst week didnโ€™t she. just got the majima side story and the last boss fight to go i think, so thatโ€™s maybe an hour and a half? iโ€™ll do it another day.

also broke out ้€†่ปขๆคœไบ‹(ใŽใ‚ƒใใฆใ‚“ใ‘ใ‚“ใ˜) 2 today! didnโ€™t get far (about halfway through the first section of case one) but i was in the middle of other stuff at the same time so i donโ€™t mind too much. itโ€™s currently about the same difficulty as the first one, though i would recommend knowing some kansai-ben going in (a main character uses it fairly often). itโ€™s not nearly as dense as some other stuff iโ€™ve read (ๅ…‰(ใฒใ‹ใ‚‹)ใŒๆญป(ใ—)ใ‚“ใ ๅค(ใชใค) from the last challenge comes to mind) but being familiar with ใธใ‚“ and ใ‚„ใง and the like would be a good idea before starting it.

todayโ€™s fate episode was ใƒญใ‚ธใƒผใƒŒโ€™s (fairly average difficulty, except for when ใพใง turned up in kanji) and todayโ€™s nhk article was this one on a river stained green by chemicals in nara and how wasnโ€™t harmful to humans. included the longest single string of kanji iโ€™ve seen yet: ๅฅˆ่‰ฏๅฅณๅญๅคงๅญฆ็”Ÿๆดป็’ฐๅขƒๅญฆ้ƒจ้ฃŸ็‰ฉๆ „้คŠๅญฆ็ง‘.

words that stood out:

ใ‚ฐใƒฉใƒณใƒ–ใƒซใƒผ - ่ฟ„(ใพใง) (in kanji!), ้‚‚้€…(ใ‹ใ„ใ“ใ†) (chance meeting)
