I spent a lot of time reading this morning. 18%, until now I didn’t realize that’s almost one fifth of the book. It’s always satisfying to read a bunch.

…For a split second I was scared about what if I read through the whole series in no time, I’ll run out of books to read…? But then I remembered I have a massive backlog and currently not even shopping for books anymore because they’re not going to be read anytime soon anyway. So no worries about running out of books, yay.

I finished the first chapter of 四畳半神話大系, and one quarter of the book. I still have no idea where the story is taking me, but it’s certainly a fun ride.

神去なあなあ日常 , 56-64%

I finished 推し、燃ゆ. It was really, really good. By the end I felt as if I could see through Akari’s eyes, feel what she felt - a character so different from me I initially thought I could never understand her. That’s a sign of very good writing, in by book.

I also continued 神去なあなあ日常. It continues to be a very pleasant read. Another example of good writing: nothing much is happening really, yet I want to keep reading. There’s humour, there’s nature, there’s unique characters and lots of interesting facts about forestry and life in the mountains. What’s not to like?

Yesterday: first story from イッキによめる! One of the first books I bought, but hadn’t touched it in ages since the long strings of hiragana were so hard for me to figure out without spaces between the words (like they have in the 10分で読めるreaders). But now I can read it! + some しろくまカフェ

today: two three chapters しろくまカフェ

I love it so much. I think reading the manga is even better than watching the anime. Something about their deadpan faces I think … I don’t know how to describe it but it’s just so great.

More books arrived today! There’s just one more, though I dunno when it’s expected yet.

• preview of ハリネズミは月を見上げる and ガールズ・ブルー
• 友人が勇者. It was good, although bittersweet.
• 君には届かない。vol 1-3. Actually rereading this time because vol 3-7 arrived today, and when I read vol 2, I had to skim vol 1 because I’d gotten it mixed up with 恋ではないと思いたい for some reason. But oh man I forgot how much that if story in vol 2 was a punch in the gut. Short but dang. Also, man, is the ending of every volume always gonna be like that? (Not exactly complaining though, especially since I have all the ones currently out now lol although it does mean I’m gonna be stuck losing my mind until after work tomorrow when I can start vol 4.) Anyway, I think I finally have ひょっとして down pat after this lol

今日は双葉のパレスに入ったから、あまり読めないんですがちょっとだけね。
しかし、リングフィットもプレイするながら良く読みました。毎日は朝から夜まで日本語を読んでいるから全部文を分からなくても意味を分かりますね。説明できないけど。。。気のせいかどうか知らない。でも、最近同僚さんと沢山会話練習出来ましたから、多分これは結果だろうと思います。

以上ですが明日のポストを小さくなると思う。

Well, nevertheless the vocabulary is useful. I took five or six of the words and used them in my Japanese class yesterday during conversation. To your second point, you might be saying that you should be pickier about what you decide to learn as vocabulary, is that right? I would say that you should learn vocabulary that you are likely to use in everyday conversation. For me, it is impossible to learn vocabulary properly (that is, to transfer it to your active vocabulary) without engaging in daily conversation. For that reason, I picked vocabulary from your list the other day which I know I would use fairly regularly.

Regarding checking the dictionary constantly, it’s not a bad habit. However, after checking, you should go back and read the sentence again as if you understand it and visualise the concept the kanji represents. Otherwise, you will associate the word with its dictionary results page and not with something you created.

Gonna be at my sister’s for a while taking care of her dachshund. Switched to reading on my iPad instead and it’s quite comfortable, being able to just lounge on the couch with the dog and read. I was kind of glued to the computer for a while because I was afraid of how often I would need to look up words but it’s actually not nearly as bad as I thought.

Word of the Day: 大団円(だいだんえん) - denouement; conclusion; finale. The kanji for this one is well-fitting, with every character gathering round in one big group for the final act.

finished part one of case four! was so long von karma wasn’t in it as much, so the speech was a lot easier to follow. it’s interesting actually to see how edgeworth speaks differently in this flashback compared to seven years, a break from von karma, and some character development later. i like it a lot.

words that stood out: 配属(はいぞく) (assignment of someone to work somewhere. in this case of a detective of the police department), 豆知識(まめちしき) (trivia. love this!), 明快(めいかい) (clear-cut, explicit, lucid. in this case of an explanation of a theory).

水柿みずがき ／鴇浅葱ときあさぎ - Washed/Pale Persimmon / Pale Pink-Brown
(these ones are a bit awkward to translate into something that reads naturally 水柿 is ‘Light Blue Persimmon’ and 鴇浅葱 is ‘(Crested Ibis Pink)-(Pale Blue-Green)’ which are kind of awkward. 浅葱 is a kind of pale cyan/teal colour (but not dull), not as bright as cyan but not as dark as teal. Though to make it more awkward the kanji of 浅葱 (pale blue-green) & 浅黄 (pale yellow) were misread back in the times of ‘read kanji however you want to’ - 浅黄 could be read as:「あさきき」、「うすき」,「あさき」or 「あさぎ」and this last one is the same reading as: 浅葱. So in the past these two colours got a bit confused and so did this colour since it’s more in the red/yellow spectrum than the blue/green one)

Words of the day

• うらめしい(.) = hateful. Just 恨(うら)む.
• 立(た)ちくらみ = orthostatic dizziness = 立(た)ち眩(くら)み
• へたり込(こ)む = to sink down on the floor. From ヘタる, and maybe へたへた; and also へこむ.
• 推(お)し量(はか)る = to guess. Well, both 推(お)す and 量(はか)る (測(はか)る) = 推測(すいそく), though 量(はか)る is more closer to measuring.
• 慮(おもんばか)る = to think over; to consider carefully. Has Furigana.
• 上擦(うわず)る = to make a high-pitched voice (in restlessness)
• 召(め)し抱(かか)える = to employ; to take into someone’s service
• 細君(さいくん) = one’s wife. Not sure if this person is supposed to be detailed and delicate. In こころ, this one is simply 妻君(さいくん).
• 慢心(まんしん) = self-conceit; proud
• 辺境(へんきょう) = remote region
• 間者(かんじゃ) = secret agent = 間諜(かんちょう)

• 張(は)り子(こ)の虎(とら) = a papier-mâché tiger; all bark (roar?) and no bite. 張(は)り子(こ) is a papier-mâché (and 振(ふ)り子(こ) is just pendulum).
• 理念(りねん) = ideal; ideology
• 篩(ふるい)に掛(か)ける = to sieve out (like with 篩(ふるい) = a sieve). First Kanji has Furigana in context. There are also other sieves, like 裏漉(うらご)し and 笊(ざる).
• 盥回(たらいまわ)し = handing off responsibility around in rotation. First Kanji has Furigana. 盥(たらい) is a wash basin, larger than 洗面器(せんめんき).
