The Winter Challenge was my first challenge here and I’m really happy I took part as it built a passion that was long dorment. Reading!
So let’s keep with the Spring one, because I’ve got a ever growing backlog of 30 Titles (novel and light novel) that I want to read.
I’m always having a lot of fun with this challenge. I have so many things I want to read but don’t get around to because of other obligations, so having a challenge to motivate me to sit down and crack open a book is great!
This time around I will be doing a lot of reading through the Tobira workbook as I am working though the textbook with the others in this thread.
I have a yearly goal of completing 2 VNs, 2 novels, and 16 manga volumes. I’ve currently finished 4 manga volumes. I’m 50ish% into Loopers (I don’t care that 40% of that was read last year), and some % into BU$TAFELLOWS. Because these yearly goals are important to me, my “what I’ve finished” section includes everything I’ve finished this year, but clearly marks which challenge it belongs to.
I also have a goal to read 52 books in English, because I want to get back to regular reading in general. And to hit 52 books I need to read on average one book per week; meaning I probably need to be pretty consistent about reading, which is my ultimate goal!
I will be tracking my English reading too, although less detailed than my Japanese reading.
Lastly, I’ll also be reading through A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar together with the club I started. And I will be tracking that too. My goal is to read just a little grammar every day, at least when we get to the main entries mid-April.
This means a good reading day should have 3 emojis. One for Japanese reading, for grammar and for English reading.

my only real goal for this one is to finish kiki’s delivery service, which i started last year (september apparently, yikes) and got burnt out at about 60% of the way through. also gonna be joining the ouran book club in may, which is exciting! i might try and make a start on 逆転検事, we’ll see.

I don’t typically include call outs in my home post so let’s add some afterwards (how have I not thought of that before ).
Thank you, @windupbird, for keeping this going for another round. And thanks to @omk3 for the calendars.
Also to @NicoleIsEnough for the regular changes I do to the calendars since a couple of challenges ago. And lastly thanks to @meagstudies for the cool table version of “what I’m reading” that I decided to steal.
It felt nice to use some spring emotes, because it really isn’t spring where I live yet. And I feel like I could really use spring coming soon, but unless things changes we going to have another big dump of snow coming this week.
I don’t personally feel like I need a separate challenge for that, I’m just adding it to this one. Just like I also have a desire to read more in English (which is my regular reading even though it is in my second language) and just add that.
From my perspective, I hope we’ll have fairly lively grammar discussions in the club threads anyway.
I might board the train once more but as usual without a calendar . Got a bit burnt out of posting in the middle of the previous one and completely disappeared at some point, needed a total break, but I think I can handle it again. Cus I miss u.
I’ve been thinking for a while about doing something like this for myself but with Imabi, like an entry a day from the beginning (never hurts to check on the basics) to the end. Not sure how effective it would be but I’m entertaining the idea regardless .
That sounds good! I did formal grammar study in the past until about 1/3 of Tobira (ish), but after that I’ve been getting all my grammar from immersion. I thought it was about time I actually read up on grammar properly again because while I am learning a lot of grammar just consuming things, I also like to understand why things are built the way they are, I feel like it gives me a bit more nuance and understanding of it as a whole.
I’m at a point where I can thankfully consult native resources at long last and a few months back I got the Japanese version of 日本語文型辞典 (Handbook of Japanese Grammar Patterns), it’s what I use when I encounter something I’d like to consult and it’s been great so far, but at the same time it’s not a resource I would use like an ordered guide or a textbook, so that’s why I thought Imabi would be good for that because it has a huge amount of content ordered by language knowledge. There is still a lot I don’t know and would like to learn in a more structured manner, especially in the advanced and classical sections because for some reason the content I’m interested in tends to use a fair amount of that (looking at you, fantasy RPGs and so on) .
Well, let´s try this again. Last time the year started and I went to the hospital for surgery almost immediatly which made me miss some days and as always, when I miss a day on something I want to do daily my motivation drops to rock bottom and it´s super hard to get back on track. Also failed on the part where I wanted to finish some stuff before I bought more, at least I will never have to worry about a lack of reading material.
I’ll be tackling my 読解 textbook for the JLPT N2 exam through this challenge!
It’s not very sexy reading material, but checking the box each day and sharing new words and grammar with you all here will be so much more fulfilling than doing it by my lonesome.
