I read a tiny amount of 推し today and it was a breeze compared to trying to read it two weeks ago on the plane. I’m actually really admiring the style of writing now. Lots of things said in unusual, but incredibly descriptive ways.

That said, not much time tonight so I re-read only up til 7%. Hopefully more time later this week.

I started another fic, and it’s 2.43 too of course and inspired by something else I read recently of course. The brainrot is still going strong lmao

• preview of ダディダーリン
• アタック‼︎ ch 81-93, finishing through vol 11 (end). I think ch 81 may have been the first time we saw Kakegawa’s coach. At least, I don’t remember seeing him before lmao. Kengo pretty much may as well have been captain and coach, like Haiji. (…And they both had shitty coaches who pushed them to injury when they were younger and then they pushed themselves to reinjury. Huh. I definitely like Haiji better though.)
  It seems there was originally gonna be a vol 12. The 新装版 only has 10 volumes, but the number of chapters in each volume seems to be different between editions, and the original runs through 93 chapters while the new edition only has through ch 90—probably because that’s a better place to end. 91 started a new arc. I wonder Ooshima-sensei suddenly needed to go on hiatus; I find that easier to believe than the series suddenly being cancelled after an announcement for the next volume was already made. And here I was thinking the 11 + 4 volumes was planned.

I read 6 pages of the Vampire Hunter D book and some pages in magazines. Maybe it would be better to read an easier book but I really love the Vampire Hunter D book its super awesome. Who knows I may even read the other books from the series one day.

I have been voting only for books that I already own as I’ve been trying to not buy new books Happy to read as a group whenever I find myself with time (…one day, haha.). Now that I’m not in a bunch of clubs all at once things are easier, but my free time is definitely more constrained than it has been in the past.

I suspect 柔らかな頬 attracted fewer votes due to length and not yet being graded, though.

read another section of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) but didn’t actually finish the first part. combination of it being quite long, more text heavy than the others have been, and a lot more words i didn’t know slowing me down. also von karma, really struggled with him and all his fancy words.

words that stood out: 審理(しんり) (trial. up to this point all that’d been used were 法廷(ほうてい) and 裁判(さいばん)), 発端(ほったん) (origin, genesis, beginning. ほっ gets me every time), and 行(い)き届(とど)く (to be scrupulous, to be prudent, to be attentive).

I wonder if they’re gonna stay on the run or it’ll follow them being caught. I’m getting the feeling the ending will be positive for Sachi and Haru both though no matter what happens. At the beginning, I was unsure whether this would just end in tragedy or not.

Tileworld Chronicles - Aryn’s Rescue, p. 11 - 20
Getting caught up and reading further along! I’ve also been using text-to-speech to get an aproximation of the flow of the text. It helps a lot! Some sentences seem to fit awkwardly into my mouth, but after hearing them said outloud it becomes manageable.

Also going back and rereading things after some time and study is so, so motivating. I’m able to read a lot more comfortably and understand many things better. And having that comparison to the last time I tried to read this makes it even better.

Anyway, we meet some new magical people/creatures. They seem friendly and appear to be friends with the old man.

Somehow I can guess vocabularies; otherwise, plain Google Translate. Nonetheless, I want to seek speed. Perhaps learning to read VN faster would help? (Maybe subvocalize more than listen, if I hate silence.)

Nonetheless, I expect listening to be currently hopeless.

I can somewhat recall the Etudes, but not so much for Well-Tempered Clavier. Took notes, anyway.

Words of the day

• あっけない = disappointing = 呆気(あっけ)ない. Probably just not amazed.
• なしのつぶて = not getting a reply = 梨(なし)の礫(つぶて). 「梨」に「無し」を掛けていう。 From a pebble (礫(つぶて)) thrown, but zero ripples (無(な)し).
• みみずばれ = wheal on the skin = 蚯蚓脹(みみずば)れ. Swollen (腫(は)れる / 脹(は)れる) red marks, like an earthworm (ミミズ).
• てんやわんや(.) = to be in a complete mess
• しける = to be stormy; to be gloomy; to be out of funds = 時化(しけ)る. 「湿気(しけ)る (= to get damp)」と同源。 Also can be somewhat similar to 悄気(しょげ)る.
• 息(いき)を引(ひ)き取(と)る = to breath one’s last; to die
• 持(も)て余(あま)す = to be too much for someone
• 出(で)だし = beginning. Probably the way of leaving (出(だ)す) an exit (出口(でぐち)).
• 木枯(こが)らし = cold winter wind. The thing that blows trees (木(き)) to dry up (枯(か)らす). Different from 枯(か)れ木(き), where I also think of 朽(く)ち木(き) (and of course, wrong Kanji).
• 軒並(のきな)み = any and every; across the board
• 圧巻(あっかん) = highlight (e.g. of a show)
• 低迷(ていめい) = hang low; recession; slump
• 蛇足(だそく) = excessive; unnecessary
• 空前(くうぜん) = record-breaking. Probably, ahead of the skies / heaven.
• 埋没(まいぼつ) = being absorbed in to immersion / being buried to oblivion. For the first meaning, probably like 没頭(ぼっとう).
• 逆境(ぎゃっきょう) = adverse circumstances. There seems to also be 順境(じゅんきょう), though I think of 順調(じゅんちょう) first.
• 変遷(へんせん) = changes; ups and downs; vicissitudes. Like 波乱万丈(はらんばんじょう)?
• 関所(せきしょ) = a checkpoint; barrier; station
• 布教(ふきょう) = missionary work. In this case, 布 is propagating; announcing, like 宣戦布告(せんせんふこく).
• 活版(かっぱん) = printing with typography. 活版印刷術(かっぱんいんさつじゅつ) in context.
• 落(お)ち延(の)びる = to escape safely
• どやす(.) = to get punched at; to get yelled at
• 卒倒(そっとう) = fainting; swooning
• 混濁(こんだく) = turbid; muddy. Describing consciousness in context, just not as bad as 昏睡(こんすい).
• 互角(ごかく) = evenly matched
• 華奢(きゃしゃ) = slim and elegant (body figure; objects)
• 裂傷(れっしょう) = lacerated wound
• 前転(ぜんてん) = forward somersault
• 延長線上(えんちょうせんじょう) = an extension of line; an extension following after an argument
• 同(おな)じ穴(あな)の狢(むじな) = badger (むじな) of the same hole; villain of the same stripe. 狢(むじな) appears to be another name for 穴熊(あなぐま) = badger.

「四月は君の嘘」の漫画はそんな単語があるなんて知らなかった、びっくりしました。

あいにく、別のシリーズからも含んだ。四月のシリーズのは、ひょっと半分かも。

実は、この程度の辞書使いのほうがいいか分からない。量や流れに障るに限らない。実際のことは、憶えるだけは足りない、推測と大体把握のほうが重要。

There are words from other series as well, but there are indeed some amount of words from April series, maybe around half.

On the contrary, perhaps I should trust my inference more sometimes, both for looking and for deciding to learn, for my own sake.

Girl Friends : second half of chapter two
Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar : ~ば and ばかり

After some days not reading, I was finally back at it today. Reading a couple of grammar points. I am behind, but if I keep being able to read two a day I’ll be back in tune shortly. Honestly, that will probably be true for through most of the reading of the dictionary. Catching up, falling behind, catching up again, etc.

Read the other half of the second chapter of Girl Friends finally. Flowed easier than any of the other times I’ve read it so far. Was tempted to keep reading because of how chapter two ends, but I just flipped through the next few pages and skim read a bit.

It is so nice to be able to do some skim reading nowadays (at least in manga). That feels like I have cleared a real hurdle. To get to the point of knowing a language well enough that you can scan, looking for specific info, but also just quickly capture the gist of a sentence here and there.

I remember a time where even the thought of flipping through pages that way looking for some info would seem overwhelming and now I do it without thinking about it.
