This hasn’t worked for me before, but third time’s the charm? (At least I think this is the third time…)

It’s a lot easier for me to read things than to watch or listen to things, so listening has fallen waaaaay to the wayside. I keep buying drama CDs but then never listening to them. I have a bunch of tabs open of things I want to watch but then never watching them. It’s ridiculous. Hopefully I can make my way through some of them this challenge…

It’s rare that I actually finish games, so I’m just doing ones I played that were voiced. I’ll think about doing different notation for completed ones if it comes to that lol. I’m also counting individual episodes of things, but all episodes I watch in a specific month will be grouped together.

I’ll probably count songs so long as I’ve never heard them before and I don’t simply let the lyrics wash over me, but I’ll only be recording them in that day’s post, not also this home post.

** :innocent:RYANAJITON HOME POST :innocent:**

This is my first ever post on WaniKani community lollll hiiii

I’ve been living in Japan for almost a year but I’m going home for a month this summer and I really want to keep my listening skills up while I’m home, so this seems like a great way to keep myself accountable!! :blossom:

I’m taking N3 on July 7th just a couple weeks before I leave for home, so I’ve added a few N3 listening practice exam videos into my list. My plan is to watch/listen to the below content, and also do at least one ‘thing’ (anime episode, movie, N3 practice exam, podcast episode) per day. So I’ll use both the content and calendar trackers. If I’m really epic my content tracker could fill up before the calendar, in which case I can just find new content I’m interested in or keep listening to my podcast every day. However it should add up to one thing per day :smile_cat: :smile_cat:

For anime I’ll try Japanese subs only and I’ll watch some more slice of life-ish ones that are also GAY cuz of I’m gay. However I’ll start with Free! Iwatobi Swim Club season 1, which I’ve seen some of with English subtitles before. Then I’m gonna try Cherry Magic! 30 Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard? because that is perhaps the best title ever. Then Sasaki to Miyano.

As for movies, there are a couple short gay ones, then I wanna try watching some of my Ghibli favs with Japanese subs for the first time. I’ve never seen the Tale of Princess Kaguya but everything else is a rewatch. I figure My Neighbours the Yamadas might be relatively easy to understand so I included it too!

Then for podcast time I’ll be listening to my fav, Yuyu no Nihongo Podcast. I usually can understand 70-80% of what he says and really enjoy it, so this shouldn’t be too hard and a good thing for otherwise busy days!

Starting from the first episode, I have begun my challenge listening to the Easy Japanese podcast on the way to work. Plan to give weekly updates.

It sounds like we have some similar plans! I’m planning to rewatch Yuri!!! on Ice and Free! along with a bunch of Ghibli stuff and reality tv. So I’ll be interested to know how it goes for you!

I can comprehend pretty well because I started my Japanese learning journey by listening to casual idol streams, but I’ll still keep this up for accountability sake. I’m checking out everyone’s recs as well!

Hey everyone! I’m excited to see what you’re listening to.

I’m starting the 4989 podcast from scratch, I listened to the first 10 minutes today

From episode 89 you can find transcripts on her website and from around 180ish it’s on all podcast services. I got hooked and wanted the back story, hence I’m starting from scratch and could only find episode 1 on at YouTube. This episode is good so far, really basic self intro and why she started the podcast.

My plan for the challenge is to listen to at least one podcast per day and, when I have time, rewatch some media that I’m familiar with, without any subtitles, or with Japanese subtitles. This is in addition to any media I might watch with English subtitles, and any listening work I do in my Japanese class.

This morning I listened to a conversation episode from Japanese with Shun (“Japanese Conversation with もしもしゆうすけ Pt. 2”). Tonight, I wanted to start rewatching Yuri!!! on Ice and discovered that my edition of the Blu-Ray won’t play without English subtitles! I’ve been looking forward to watching it again, so went ahead and watched Episode 1 while trying to ignore the subtitles. I may rethink my choice of materials, but last year at this time I was in Kyuushuu, where Yuri is set, and it’s making me feel all 懐かしい, so we’ll see.

So for the first day of the challenge, I intended to finally start the current BAC anime, and so I promptly went onto Netflix and watched the first two episodes of Dungeon Meshi. I’m apparently pretty prepared for the dungeon crawling vocab now, though some of the cooking vocab was quite difficult, I’d have hoped my Yuru Camp experience would have helped more. Oh well.

Now anyone following that thread has probably realised that that’s the wrong anime. We’re supposed to be watching the other fantasy cooking anime. Oops. That’s what I get for not checking the thread first.

So I guess tomorrow I’ll watch Campfire Cooking in Another World.

(If you think you’ve seen this post before, it’s because I posted in the old thread by mistake at first)

Joined. I did the winter challenge but skipped spring to focus on reading. I’m still focusing on reading but I figured that I since I already find myself scrolling youtube for 30+ minutes every day not clicking anything I’m blowing time on nothing. I’m going to try to default to listening practice when I find myself scrolling mindlessly and shoot for about 30 minutes a day.

This was some very passive listening because I was only vaguely paying attention whilst doing other stuff, still caught words though. I haven’t listened to Teppei in a while it was a slight struggle my listening isn’t great, but that’s why I’m here to work on it :muscle:

For this challenge, I’m going to be categorizing my listening time a little bit differently than I did during my 100 hour challenge:

  • Intensive Listening - Stuff I’m actually transcribing/translating, paying extremely close attention to exactly what is being said. This also includes things that I am watching with subtitles and pausing regularly to look up words or grammar. (Generally, anything that I’m rewinding to re-listen to things regularly is Intensive)
  • Extensive Active Listening - Things that I am watching for entertainment, but paying attention to fully or mostly fully. Watching streamers play games, but still focused and looking up words, trying to comprehend enough to make things interesting. (Pausing, but generally not rewinding)
  • Passive Listening - Still listening for entertainment and a little bit of comprehension, but not worrying about looking up words at all. Usually this is stuff that I put on to casually watch as I’m falling asleep at night. (No Pausing at all, attention fading in and out)

I do also watch shows with english subs sometimes with friends, and I am trying to pay attention to the japanese while we do this, but I won’t be counting those for my log or for the challenge.

For today, I watched the first regular mio stream since her return. Highlight was definitely her talking about how fubuki had been so reserved since she was in the hospital, but as soon as mio was home and feeling up to seeing people, she started acting almost like a little puppy running figure 8s around her feet with excitement (fan art depiction). Her schedule is still pretty light, but she will be back to playing persona 3 later this week :tada:

I continued with the next 10 minutes of episode 1 of the 4989 podcast. It was interesting to hear about her initial struggles the first years in America and how she felt unprepared language wise despite having studied English at something like a community college 短大 if I got that right. The next and final 10 minutes that I’ll listen to tomorrow seems to be about English phrases not used in Japan like "how are you? " “I’m fine” I can guess where this is going as Germans are also bewildered by this. I’m looking forward to that

In javerend speak this is extensive active listening for me. Got to stretch those comprehension muscles and fight through hearing things that I would easily understand reading but that cause me to pause and think when I hear it.

Yesterday’s update! Wasn’t a big day for studying sadly but had time to watch youtube. This is pretty passive, I just look up words occasionally. I do pause and try to read the dialogue occasionally but that depends heavily on my mood. I’ve found that I’ve become a lot better at quickly skimming the dialogue bubbles since the youtuber clicks through them so fast.

Today’s listening: 2 episodes of Japanese with Shun during my morning run: “[N4-N3] Japanese Conversation with もしもしゆうすけ” (56 minutes; full version of the short excerpt I listened to yesterday) + Ep. 211 “[N5-N4] Cold” (9 minutes). I have plans for the rest of the day, so that will probably be it for today.
