How it works

We create a reading schedule with a set number of pages to work through each week. Each week, we create a new discussion thread for that week’s reading. In those threads, we discuss everything from vocabulary and grammar to the characters and story.

How do I join in?

  • Get yourself a copy of the book (see “Where to purchase” below)
  • Click on the participation poll below to let us know you’re planning to join in
  • Set this thread to “watching” so you get updates on the group (go just past the last post in this thread, click on the grey box that says “normal” or “tracking” and change this to “watching”)

Soggy did you nominate this just cause it has 図書室 in the title

I will neither confirm nor deny whether I am spreading the library agenda one book club book at a time…

I was all for this club but sorry I’m not going to make this one Soggy! I’m under the weather at the moment (long term thing rearing its head again) so need to prioritise time & energy a little. Have fun and hopefully I’ll come in for the next one! :jack_o_lantern:

I’ve made a schedule for the first half of the book, trying to stay under 15 pages/week.

Looks like the book has short stories as well as sections with an overarching plot about the protagonist. ‘End of story’ means read until the end of the story, all of which are marked with 了。 ‘End of chapter’ means read until the beginning of the next story, which is clearly marked with a title, and I’ve put the titles in as chapter names, since that’s all we’re given.

When we get about halfway through the book, then I’ll put up a poll for whether or not we want to increase the pace or keep it the same. Let me know if you have any comments or questions!

@soggyboy, thank you for the idea to create the children’s novel club.

In this book the choice of words with furigana is somewhat surprising. Seeing a furigana for 本 (in the first graphical page) was surprising, as many much more complicated words afterwards get no furigana.

I think that you should make a small correction to the reading schedule. 白い人 is a very short chapter and you perhaps missed the beginning of the following chapter 黒い人.

In week 6, it should be chapter 白い人 + end of story in chapter 黒い人,
and in week 7 it is the end of chapter 黒い人.

Oops, you’re right, updated the schedule! Thanks!

I plan to start today. Starting a new book is always intimidating so I’ll probably just crack it open and peek at the first page.

Try reading the prologue page before the character cards, I bet you’ll find it’s easier than you think!

Ah, I had kind of forgotten about it thinking October was weeks away but it crept up on me and startled me. Appropriately spooky for the scariest month. Purchased and will start reading shortly.

I was way behind (as in I hadn’t even started yet), but I dedicated my Halloween to catching up, in between passing out candy for the trick or treaters. I figured it was appropriate! :ghost: :jack_o_lantern: Definitely a spooky book so far, and not my usual genre (as a kid, I would have been terrified, I’m sure), but I’m enjoying it now as an adult!
