Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Seems like there are two versions of the book (info from Bookwalker)

  • The one in the OP (publisher ポプラ社, 2020, 1,760円 (税込))
  • The other one (publisher ポプラ文庫, 2023, 814円 (税込))

I hope that it is the same text. I added the special offer to the ‘Where to purchase’ links in the OP (I don’t know how long it will be available?)

Yeah, seems like the text is the same just from looking a few pages into the previews. I have no idea why the price is different, but I don’t think it’s supposed to be a special offer. It if is part of a campaign or sale, there should be an end date right beside the price.

Probably the hardcover vs paperback versions again. I already bought the book during the last vote and got the cheaper one.

Here comes my proposed schedule. The book is divided in 5 chapters with a similar structure, but slightly different lengths. I suggest that we spend 3 - 4 weeks on each chapter.

Unfortunately I don’t have any physical page numbers, and the bookwalker editions do not have locations. I have added percentages to give you an indication where to stop each week.

If someone can provide the physical page numbers for the breakpoints I’ll be happy to add them to the table.

Any comments on this schedule?

I just asked on the Bookwalker freebies thread yesterday and that seems to be the case (confusingly for digital). I compared the toc and page numbers - 100% the same, the second one is the “paperback” that came out a few years after hardback

Had some bad news today…ok, that sounds like someone died, let’s start over.
My offline, non-Japanese book club decided today that we’re going to read this book in May. So I‘ll have to somehow rush through this solo in the next 5 weeks, which means no opinion on the schedule.

This will be my fifth concurrent book club come the start date. I may have to make a weekly schedule to make sure I get all my club reads done :scream:

I looked for this book on jpdb.io but I was told - what you are looking for is not in the library…

I won’t be reading along, but hope to drop by for the discussion. I got this one as a gift in another language for christmas, so it feels a bit too soon for me to reread it :slightly_smiling_face:

Can you suggest a book to be added on jpdb.io?

If wanted I could add a shared (writeable) excel table for vocab, but I will not be the one to fill it with data. So far the poll indicates that almost everyone will be reading one of the e-book versions, and those normally come with an inbuilt dictionary.

There’s a channel on their discord for this purpose, but when I made a request a year and a half ago, it never went through.
Another option, if you have the book as an epub file, is to create the deck manually. Steps to do that in this post

I had some problems converting my kindle file to an epub format, but now I have finally found the right step by step tutorial (and the correct plugin (beta-)versions!) and it finally worked. Now I will proceed with your instructions in the other post …

Does this look right to you? Or is it still in progress?

@Akashelia I think that I managed to export and share a jpdb deck. Could you test it please?

EDIT:
file deleted, see below for the new one.

Looks good to me  here it is compared side to side with the first page of the book (I haven’t bought it but just opened the free preview)

There is a small artifact though, it looks like the furigana are also in the deck as new words.

The version on Bookwalker doesn’t have furigana, does the Kindle one have? In case it’s possible for you to turn them off, the result would be even better (otherwise it can still be used as it is but a bit annoying)
(You could also consider deleting the mokuji before doing the import in JPDB, that way the first words are the first words of the first chapter)

I guess it’s the percentage that is throwing you off? It just shows how many words you already know from that deck, here is how it looks for me (I used JPDB a lot so I already have a lot of words marked as known)

Thank you for checking.

I used calibre with 2 plugins to convert the book to epub, reading the file directly from the connected kindle device - therefore I don’t think that I can manage the displaying of furigana. I then converted it to a simple txt-format and hoped that this would eliminate the furigana - apparently it did not, but instead inserted the furigana character after each kanji.

Here is the first sentence of the text file:
彼氏ができた、と沙さ耶やからラインがきたので「どんな人?」と訊いたら、「医者」とだけ返ってきた。

So you see that the name 沙耶 (さや) has become 沙さ耶や.

The epub displays the furigana correctly (just as it is on kindle):

If you know an (easy to use) script to eliminate the furigana (from the epub file) I would give it a try.

I think there might be a way. Chances are that the furigana is encoded, something like 東芝とうしば would look like that in the epub file:

<ruby>東芝<rt>とうしば</rt></ruby>

So with a regex we might be able to just replace all the tags by nothing, which means deleting them.
I’ll have a look at it this evening (Europe time) and get back to you if I can get a step by step working or if I can get Calibre to export without furigana
