I’ve added a tentative schedule to the OP. It’s a bit rough, but I think we can even this out by reading a bit ahead / trailing behind if necessary. Chapter 5 is a bit long, maybe we want to split it? We can also decide later (once we started reading and got a feeling for the material).

What do you think?

  • Let’s start with that schedule (and maybe adjust later)
  • I want to go faster
  • I want to go slower
  • I have a different idea altogether (please explain)

I’m looking forward to what the hype is about. I’ve not found one critical review of the book so far, and it’s revered for starting a new mystery movement in Japan. I hope my expectations are not too high already :frowning:

Starting at the beginning of May feels fast, but I just checked, and we should be finished with 後鳥羽 by then o_O.

Since we will be close to finishing Butter at that point as well, I think I’m okay with going a bit harder in some weeks. I’ll probably give feedback again after reading the first 2 weeks, when I can more properly judge how hard it is.

EDIT: The natively club had other page numbers, is that a version difference and they read super fast?

I was also confused by this initially, but the club‘s home thread explains it:

I am calculating the pages from my Bookwalker digital version, but I‘m recalculating to more or less match the paperback pages (which is the only reliable number as digital page counts usually depend on screen size and font size). So yes, it seems they read it quite fast.

I read this a little while back and it was pretty good, hope you all enjoy!

oh hey that’s me :waving_hand:

I quite enjoyed this book. I’m sure someone will eventually give it a negative review (there are no books that please everyone) but it’s a pretty solid mystery and it’s good fun.

The MBC on Natively read books at a pretty fast pace, definitely don’t feel obligated to keep those numbers.

I’ll probably lurk this club when it kicks off, but of course not comment (unless there’s a grammar question or something I suppose).

I don’t feel like rereading but I hope everyone enjoys it!

I think the book is fine. So I wouldn’t give it a negative review, but I wouldn’t leave a glowing review either.

And we’re off with the third evaluation book for our new MMMBC pick!

Mmm, I haven’t read this book, but that’s about where I landed on for the second book in the series. Really I think that was just that the elements of the mystery genre that the author thinks are important and focuses on don’t match my personal preferences, though. It was a good version of the book it was trying to be.

Ha, my book finally arrived, or to be more precise I got it from my friend that came back from Japan recently, so I can finally read further than the free sample from amazon  .

Only one book but double the cover, I prefer the 新装改訂版 cover honestly.

Let’s see if I can finish the first week before the second already starts ^^.

Week 2 is here! Let’s see where chapter 1 takes us

Here is week 3 already!

This time we will be reading a full chapter, and the page number also increased. After this week, it will drop again, but please take note of how you feel with the larger amount as we are currently planning to read chapter 5 in one week as well, and it is even a bit longer than chapter 2. If it’s too much for many of you, we could think about breaking it up and switching things around a bit. Just let me know here :+1:

I was a little worried about that and started reading yesterday already. I do have to say the beginning of the chapter was a little rough again, but then it suddenly got surprisingly easy. Not only that, but I flew through many pages without much of a problem, and basically no lookups.
I hope others will chime in as well, but from my point of few it seems totally fine.

Thanks for your opinion @downtimes - good to hear that it was still manageable. :+1:

For everybody who had a hard time getting through it for whatever reason, here is Week 4 with a lower page count, so you can hopefully catch up smoothly:

Here is Chapter 4:

Currently we are reading at ~35 pages per week, but according to our schedule, next week (i.e. Chapter 5) will be a bit more than 60 pages. How should we proceed with it?

  • I am fine with 60 pages
  • Please split the week up

As previously announced, this week is a bit longer! Welcome to Chapter 5:

This week we get to read two chapters even :flexed_biceps:

Here is the next chapter:

Here is the first part of Chapter 9:

After having determined where you should have stopped last week :face_with_peeking_eye:
here is the rest of chapter 9:
