I know what Hard Off is, but every time I see it I’m like, man, does that not sound good in English ![]()

Tobias Fünke’s new venture, I’m guessing.
Well, whoever scanned this copy got it for a buck. So, that’s either good news or bad news, depending on when they bought it.
Week 2 is here:
It took me a bit, but I realized finally why I know the overworld theme for this game. In middle school/high school, I downloaded the “Love Will Grow” album off the internet (I’m pretty sure it was the only mp3 album I had at the time, and took up a significant portion of my hard drive). It covers various songs of the games as actual new songs, with lyrics, in various languages. I listened to it on loop for months. I think Eternal Wind was sung in French, and was very pretty.
Another standout for me was the FF6 town theme, which was sung in portuguese (then again I grew up in a portuguese family), and Home Sweet Home from FF5 (which is a certified ear worm). I didn’t even get to play a lot of the games that these songs were from for years after I heard the music. Heck, in FF2’s case it was nearly 30 years!
Ah, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjgqX5G6gs4 its got a bossa nova kinda thing going on.
Thank you!
This is my first time playing FF2 ever and yet I felt like the theme was SO familiar. It’s the exact same for me, FF Love Will Grow and FF Pray, both those albums are incredible!
Whelp, I never thought I’d find anyone else who ever heard those albums.
They were pretty special to me but even other people that liked video game music had never heard of them.
I may have listened to them as well, but I was more into the rock covers at the time. There was this website called “radio blog club” that was an early music streaming website using Flash that was quite popular at least in France. I remember streaming a ton of FF music from it circa 2005.
Apparently the website got shutdown in 2009 after lawsuits. Not too surprising I presume…
The week 3 vocab list is ready in the spreadsheet.
Week 3 vocab from sheet added to Bunpro deck
180 unique items for this week!
Fear not, dreadnought:
The week 4 vocab list is ready in the spreadsheet. It’s only 1k char in total this time (and most of it is optional), so a fairly light week Japanese-wise.
Sun Flame Can’t Melt War Ships:
Week 4 vocab has been added to the bunpro deck. Only 44 new items! ![]()
Week 5 vocabulary is ready. I’m a bit busy right now so I couldn’t proofread the entire vocab list but preferred to get it out early for those who want to study it before the thread is posted.
As expected the amount of weekly Japanese should remain relatively low from here on out (~2k chars for week 5, 1.5k average for the remaining weeks).
In number of characters, it isn’t too terrible. But in number of lines on the spreadsheet, it is nearly as long as Week 3 (the longest so far). So, perhaps on average lower sentence length and complexity compared to other weeks? Maybe a lot more filler dialogue from randoms?
I’ve been thinking about this for a couple weeks and realized why FF2 has felt much less “dialogue”-y and infodumpy to me until now compared to FF1 when paradoxically it has more text.
I think one reason is that the party now speaks, as simple as the dialogue is, so instead of having nine おじさん standing in a circle or whatever character of the week hitting your silent party with a twenty textboxes infodump of an explanation, they can actually have little back and forth of dialogue, which will make for less complicated sentences and more “reactive” dialogue.
“You need to do thing”
“Where do we need to go?”
“I don’t know, speak with Random Guy”
“But nobody has seen Random Guy…”
“Speak with Other Random Guy, he should have some info”
The keyword system results in more optional dialogue, but that one also is often just a couple text boxes lengths, being usually a short comment from the character that triggers a new keyword or a new event. (Like not being able to do X until you tell character Y you are doing Z)
Totally random news, but apparently Square is somehow updating FF7 and then delisting the original, and giving everyone who owns the original the new version. But, they have no information about how the game will be updated. So, it could be nothing, or it could be a remaster like FFVIII. If you need FF7 on PC for later, get it now. I think its five bucks.
I posted about it in the home thread:
There’s a good chance is going to be the same version as on the Switch, which would finally mean Japanese support.
Time to make some friends. And lose some too.
