For me, I wanted to invest further into Migaku. I like having a database of known words and I like the parsing/dictionary pop-up it does for watching videos and you can also load epub/text/html into it on both web browser and in the phone app.
I’m technologically capable (I’m a software developer), so the set up really wasn’t difficult for me. And the actual process is really simple, I hit a keyboard shortcut and everything else just HAPPENS, all the OCR / copy / paste / etc.
I don’t plan on screenshotting every piece of dialog, that was mostly just for the example. And, I also have the entire FF2 PR script so I could just dump any dialog into Migaku that way as well. However, I purchased every FF from 1-12 for Switch, so this was meant to be a long term investment. Although, the goal is at some point to just not need any of it. Then I can just snap a pic of the screen from my phone in the Migaku app if there’s a word I don’t know and want to add it to my SRS rotation.
Could you accomplish this with free tools like Anki and YomiTan, etc? Yeah, definitely, but this fit works really well for me.
Also a software developer, and you just made me realize I could probably replicate my pc setup on steam deck. There goes my free time for the next couple days!
I have a job as a software developer, and therefore I can’t stand doing any programming outside of work. Which is a shame, since I used to actually enjoy that sort of thing… I wish I could end a workday and still have the motivation you guys seem to have, to program these cool tools for Japanese learning… How do you do it!?
Lucky! I haven’t felt like that about coding for ages, even though I remember having that thought before. Maybe some day that feeling will come back… In the meantime, I guess I’ll just keep enjoying the fact that other programmers make fun stuff (like FF video games and language learning tools)!
窟 is literally the first non-WK kanji I encountered, and I swear it comes up in every game or manga I’ve seen since then. It’s bananas that it isn’t in WK, but there’s stuff like 漣 that didn’t even have a word associated with until a few months ago. That kanji doesn’t even appear in my IME unless I type さざなみ, and that word isn’t in WK!
Ok I have finally settled on a complete schedule: if everything goes according to plan we’ll finish on Week 10 which will be posted on March 7.
I was a bit concerned with the amount of dungeons on some weeks but since most participants use the Pixel Remaster where you have a map and can easily disable encounters, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. @Daisoujou who’s playing on Famicom will just have to lock in, but I’m not too worried.
Maybe we can think of starting FF3 in early April and finally graduate to the Super Famicom games this summer, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
I’m gonna say probably not. I’m sure your suggestion was tongue in cheek, but still, I can’t figure out where to get that thing. The 3rd party sellers won’t ship to my US address. Japanese booksellers with listings seem to be out. There’s one on ebay for $40 bucks, which is tempting for such a weird artifact. I can’t find anyone who has digitized it, legally or illegally. This thing is on the verge of being lost media, which is a real shame.
Yeah I fired Tor Browser to see if I could find a digital version somewhere but no luck. Being a videogame novelization published in 1989, it’s not too surprising I suppose.
I also considered buying it, the cover alone is pretty great and I think there’s some art inside too.

I think I saw the ultimania for FF8 on Annas Archive when I was looking for FF2. What are the rules around linking AA on this forum? O/w just go there yourself, it’s definitely there in JP, FF7 & 12 ultimania omega also. There’s also a JP manga for FF12 that I didn’t know existed. AA is basically the only source for a lot of lost shit that no corporate types bothered to preserve. Unfortunately no FF2.
