I love when that happens
It reminds me of how I learned a few kanji by simply seeing them over and over in book club titles on here when I was a beginner.
That’s how I originally learned the kanji for 何. It was everywhere so it didn’t take too long for me to figure it out. Although I already knew what the word meant and what sound it makes so there was a headstart there lol
Here’s week 4:
I haven’t catch up with week 3 yet
and there’s already week 4 ![]()
I’ll try to catch up with both weeks soon
I don’t want to miss all the fun this manga has to offer ![]()
Done panic! Lol I’m also behind. I finished 3 on Saturday and haven’t started 4 yet. So we can be late together ![]()
As long as you are still reading that’s all that matters ![]()
I appreciate the kind words ![]()
I’m trying to come up with strategies to help me better plan my reading and I appreciate any tips you have ![]()
I read (almost) every day in Spanish and Japanese. For me, it works well to have a set time, like before bed for Spanish. You can start small, like 5 minutes.
Maybe right after learning your new Wanikani or after reviewing would be a good time to read as you are already in the mindset of studying Japanese? The only problem is that sometimes you get ahead of the book club pace!
I wish I had tips on how to build a routine or prioritize things but in all honestly I just created two guidelines.
- It should be fun
- I shouldn’t get mad at myself for mistakes/slowness.
I found that I will make time if it’s something I really want to do. I also found I was less discouraged and kept the desire to keep learning if I didn’t get mad at myself.
The moment stuff isn’t fun I adjust my methods or take a step back if I’m getting mad at myself.
Maybe it’ll take me 40 years to be fluent in Japanese but eh, I’m having fun while I do it at least.
Sorry I know this isn’t much help and I’m sure other people can give better advice but this is what I do. But you are not failing as long as you keep trying. This is a marathon after all and running is set at your pace. ![]()
Thank you very much for your help ![]()
I think this is what I used to do back in the day, when my goal was to just read a page of a book a day, per se. It worked well back then, but I might’ve not been so overwhelmed back then?
I think currently my main problem is time, time organizing and priorities. Most of the times I really have no energy anymore after I get back home from work and do everything else in my learning schedule. Sometimes I would give the time (which should theoretically be given to reading) to other lighter activities just to relax a bit (or because I’m lazy or would assume it’s a lot to start with the reading, since it’s gonna take a lot of effort maybe). Sometimes it would feel frustrating, but sometimes it’s just the right thing to do. I think me trying to find the balance between these days and when to read and when to rest is important. I also think organizing my reading in a better way might be helpful (especially since I’m trying to pick up pieces of four or five different books/manga in different languages).
I really appreciate your help ![]()
Thank you very much for your answer ![]()
I always need to remind myself of that
I appreciate your help a lot
and I truly believe that fun should be part of the process, per se ![]()
Being content and forgiving with yourself is very important, too ![]()
Thank you again for your advice ![]()
Yeah, I totally get this. Some days I’m all in to study all evening, other days I just want to become one with the couch. But I’ve managed to read every day this year so far (by decreasing some other hobbies/studying priorities), so it’s possible!!
If after work feels hard, maybe try other times of the day? Morning could be nice if you’re one of those morning people (I’m not lol), or even during a lunch break sometimes? Or you could try changing up where you read. Is there a nice outdoor space, park, library, cafe, desk, or even a chair that you don’t normally associate with relaxing and decompressing? If you can find a space that you can associate with mental focus it might be easier to get into the mood to read.
And yes, like others and yourself have said, give yourself some grace and do the pace that works for you. I view my Japanese learning not as a race to get fluent but as a lifelong skill that I get to enjoy building as long as I want!
I don’t know how to give your tips justice
I’m just crying ![]()
Thank you very much for taking the time to help this helpless soul
Thank you a lot ![]()
Indeed
I think the way it worked many years ago was to make the goal to read one page of a book a day, per se. I wasn’t as busy as I’m now, but maybe simplifying the process / goal might help in this regard.

What I found from a little experimenting is that my stamina and “liking / wanting” to read are way better on vacation and weekends
(at least when I’ll have the time to).
I don’t mean to shoot down all your suggestions with a simple “No”. Instead, I’m gonna think about what you suggested, since changing things might be the solution indeed. I’m a morning person
. However, I’m a morning person, because I have to wake up early to go to work in order to leave work at a time I’m comfortable with. After work there are the mundane tasks, but I should try to make a room when I have the chance to. Changing the scenery isn’t as simple, so to speak, but even a small change in the “room” scenery might be helpful. You gave me a lot of ideas that I need to think about ![]()
What I also found is that if I don’t have shows to binge, I would have time to read
and I think part of the current problem might be me prioritizing catching up on certain shows over trying to read
I have many problems it seems ![]()
So, again, time, energy and priority. Those are the key factors I need to focus on along with the tips you suggested ![]()

I like how you view Japanese and I liked to think about it the same way when I first started and I need to remind myself of that every now and then
Thank you for the reminder ![]()
Taking things “baby steps” is the key, I presume. Everyone here gave me a lot to think about and consider
and I’m grateful for that ![]()
Organizing my time is also something I really should get back to. I really miss the ultimate discipline days ![]()
I’m grateful for everyone’s help and support
and apologize for rambling a lot
Also, I really need to learn how to get more energy ![]()
