Tina and her brother Nicholas live in a cozy little village in Finland. Together, they run a soup shop that is very popular among the locals. One day, Nicholas sees a dandelion floating near the window of their house. Upon grabbing hold of it, he locks it in a jar. Unexpectedly, the flower transforms into a cute little being! The siblings melt in its presence, and they immedietally adopt it.

Dressed in a small sweater that was knitted for him, Kesaran becomes a member a member of their family, and he will live plenty of adventures, each one funnier than the next. He will even help the siblings make new recipes as a small chef.

:world_map: How it works

We create a reading schedule, with a set number of pages to work through each week. Each week we create a new discussion thread for that week’s reading. In those threads we discuss everything from vocab and grammar to the characters and story. We try to help each other by contributing to the shared vocab list, by answering each other’s questions and by keeping each other motivated.

:speech_balloon: Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

:nail_polish: Resources and vocabulary

  • Advice for those new to reading
  • Jisho is a popular online Japanese-English dictionary.
  • Manga Kotoba has an auto-generated frequency list for all the words used in the volume.
  • ichi.moe is a tool for parsing out sentences. You can type/paste in a whole sentence and it will try and break the sentence down into its individual parts.
  • Deepl will translate a sentence from Japanese to English. It’s obviously not going to be right all the time, so if you want to check your translation it’s normally better to ask in the thread.

I’m looking through the volume making the schedule, and most chapters are conveniently 10-15 pages. The only long one is chapter 1 with 22 pages, which I’ll split into three weeks so that new readers have time to adjust. Other than that there’s no chapter splitting!

Can’t wait! I’m interested to see how much of the book I’ll understand before looking things up.

Special welcome to everyone who’s joining their first book club! If you’re not already, I recommend studying the vocabulary list in advance.

I’m also working on making a grammar list. It will be some kind of Google sheet, and I’ll also make a deck on Bunpro. ETA is one week, but if you want a head start, here’s a rough draft of weeks 1-3:

Grammar

1: ている、verb past tense、も、もう、たら、よう (volitional)、けっこう、に行く/に来る、と思う、みたい、それなら
2: のような、の、たり、ことがある、てみる、なくて、しか~ない、かな、っぽい、になる、adjective past tense、あげる、たしか、ないと、ながら、くれる、といい
3: のだろうか、から、まだ、なきゃ、けど、にする

Your first attempt at reading native content is going to feel like solving a puzzle. And without vocab and grammar knowledge, it’s going to be like trying to solve a puzzle blind. Studying these two lists will give you the gift of sight back.

This is so cool, I love that you’re doing this! That’s gonna be a great resource for folks.

Thanks, that grammar list is really helpful. Also, it’s pretty hilarious that Soup is the most common vocabulary word according to that site lol.

:police_car_light: Red Alert :police_car_light:

My copy was delivered to Kinokuniya today!!!

Just in time to get a head start in! Going to try and keep the falling behind at bay just in case life throws curve balls again. :dotted_line_face:

The puzzle:

Remember, studying doesn’t mean “learn everything about them and have them memorized and recognize them immediately on sight”.

It’s easier to understand and remember grammar after you’ve learned it and seen it in context multiple times.

It’s fine to read up on each point to get the gist of it in advance of the club, then re-read grammar material as we encounter each point during the club.

I haven’t checked on this one yet, but sometimes the series name appears on the top corner of multiple pages throughout the volume. When this happens, it artificially increases the count for words found in the title. You can typically recognize this from an auto-generated frequency list if multiple words from the title all appear high on the list.

Excited for soup! I think I’ll make soup on the first day of the book club! Just need to decide what kind…

Really appreciate this!!!

Incredible wisdom that I need to keep in mind so as to not be so hard on myself.

Hello! I’ll be joining the soup club, I mean book club. Just purchased the digital version on bookwalker, which was an interesting experience in itself.

Lately my wanikani enthusiasm had waned somewhat and I feel like I’m just treading water, so I hope by joining my first book club I can get back into studying!

I’ve tried to learn some basic grammar points in the past, but they’ve not really struck - I think the practice of actually trying to read would help a lot, especially with motivation.

Thanks for organising and for everyone participating. Looking forward to discussing soup with you all.

Reading definitely does help grammar stick. I read through a bit of Genki I and watched some of ToKiniAndy’s videos on it, but most of it didn’t stick, except for the stuff I had seen before while reading. I guess it’s because it’s hard to remember things when you’re seeing them for the first time, but seeing those grammar points in context helps a lot.

Haven’t done a book club in quite some time. Bought the book, I’ll follow along!

the andy tokini that started his channel is not the andy tokini that is operating it now. i have watched every video in order. there is a specific way he held his mouth when explaining something he genuinely didn’t understand yet. that tell disappeared completely in 2021 and has never come back. whatever replaced him already knew everything and has been performing the process of learning for an audience since then. i don’t know why. i don’t know what it needs from us. but it is not learning japanese. you need to stay away from that material if you can help it.
